Those of us who are happy owners of a summer cottage have probably thought more than once about installing a barbecue. There are a great many designs of barbecue makers that you can assemble with your own hands. Which one to choose? As a rule, a brazier and a barbecue brazier are combined into a single installation so that different types of products can be cooked in one go. If your goal is to get by with a minimal budget and at the same time get a comfortable and durable grill, then pay attention to the kebab maker from the barrel.

Advantages and disadvantages

Perhaps some will be just too lazy to tinker with an old barrel, when all kinds of barbecues of various designs and at a very affordable price can be found on sale for a long time. However, the real owners never lose heart, and I want to find use for all unnecessary and worn-out things, for example, an empty metal barrel. Such homely people have golden hands and at the sight of a barrel a lot of ideas probably arise, how and where all this can be adapted.

Barbecue from a barrel has its pros and cons. Of the advantages, we note:

  • the possibility of cooking not only barbecue, but also other dishes on the grill or in metal dishes;
  • ease of cleaning and maintenance;
  • a large amount of food cooked at the same time (for example, in a grill from a 200-liter barrel);
  • safety and practicality of use;
  • ease of installation;
  • affordable cost.

The disadvantages include:

  • the possibility of corrosion (to avoid this, make a protective visor over the brazier);
  • rapid incandescence, respectively, you need to be careful and attentive so as not to burn yourself;
  • impossibility of transportation, since the structure is not collapsible.

How to do it yourself?

First, choose the right place for a stationary structure. There should be no wood or other flammable objects near it. It is also not recommended to place the grill next to plantings and flower beds, since hot air can negatively affect their vegetation.

The advantages of a homemade barbecue over a store barbecue are obvious: such a barbecue is static and solid. You can be sure that the kebab maker will not fall over or accidentally turn over, as often happens with thin-legged purchased brethren. You can adjust the height of the legs and the frame and make it according to the height of your household, so that no one has to stand at the barbecue in a bent position. And the dimensions of the barbecue barbecue significantly exceed the standard mini-constructions from the store, which means that there will be enough barbecue for everyone.

A homemade barbecue grill can be without a lid or with a mini-door. Both varieties allow not only roasting meat over an open fire, but also cooking vegetables, fish and poultry on a barbecue grill. And the improved barrels also have the function of a grill, for this it is enough to provide for spit racks in the barbecue design. If desired, you can cook dishes in metal or cast-iron dishes over an open fire.

Consider the manufacturing process.

  • Usually, for the installation of a metal barbecue, barrels from fuels and lubricants are used. The brazier can be large or small - 200 or 60 liters in size. The height of the barbecue is about 1 meter. In order for the installation of the structure to be carried out as quickly and simply as possible, make a drawing of the barbecue, having accurately verified all dimensions.It is worthwhile to follow the plan in stages, then you can save a lot of time and please your household and friends with a delicious barbecue as quickly as possible.
  • First, construct the frame structure to fit the barrel, while thinking about the uprights for the side section. For transportation on site, wheels can be attached to the frame. Place the barrel on the frame, considering the drain hole at the top at an angle of 30 degrees. An exhaust pipe can be connected to it, if necessary.
  • Draw a rectangular hole on the barrel - this will later be the lid of the barbecue. It is cut out with a grinder, and after that door hinges are attached to it so that the lid can open and close. To provide additional traction, drill holes in the sides of the barbecue. It remains to attach the handle and put the chimney on the drain hole. And for the possibility of barbecuing, install a stainless steel grate.
  • As for the inside of the structure, you need to make supports for the skewers. To do this, cut 2 metal corners along the length of the barrel and make cuts 10 cm apart. Then weld these blanks from the inside. And in order to make the barrel look better aesthetically, paint the structure with a special heat-resistant paint from a spray gun. To do this, you can use powder thermal paints, organosilicon enamels or even "indestructible" paint for car mufflers, which, moreover, is environmentally friendly.

For the durability of the structure, experts recommend applying the composition in several layers. And in just 24 hours you can use your creation for barbecue or barbecue.

In the process of making a brazier with your own hands, you will probably be creative in the process and think over additional functions and a unique design of such a structure. If you have the time and desire to complicate the grill by adding a smokehouse function, you will need 2 barrels. They are interconnected (one vertically, the other horizontally), and in the lower part there is a compartment with a door for storing firewood. If you are unsure of your talent as a welder or simply do not know how to handle a welding machine, do not despair. You can fix all the connections in the barbecue with bolts.

And to give the barbecue a "home" look and for additional practicality and convenience, it is worth installing all kinds of shelves on it, where you can keep dishes with marinated meat or plates. This will make the process of barbecuing even more comfortable.

The subtleties of choosing firewood

Perhaps few people know how important it is to choose the "right" firewood for the barbecue. The taste of a dish cooked on charcoal often depends on this. Firewood prepared from fruit trees will be an excellent fuel for a barbecue grill. Their dense wood is able not only to keep the fire for a long time, but also to add a delicate and refined aroma to the food being prepared.

Do not use softwood firewood, especially spruce. The fact is that when conifers burn, they emit resinous substances that negatively affect the taste of meat. Also, aspen firewood is not recommended - their smoke contains toxins, so the consumption of such a kebab can be hazardous to health.

The presence of 6 acres in the country simply obliges the owners to acquire such a device for good rest as a barbecue. With financial stability, you can organize a large stationary brick grill with a gazebo. And if you want to save money, pay attention to the designs of small barbecues, which you can easily do with your own hands in just a day. One of such universal and irreplaceable devices for giving is a barbecue grill made of a metal barrel, which, subject to all manufacturing technologies, will serve you faithfully for many years.
