Flowers are a decoration for any garden. Refined roses are especially popular with gardeners. This article is devoted to Canadian roses, their features, the subtleties of planting and growing.

The best varieties

The Canadian rose group includes a wide variety of varieties. You should definitely familiarize yourself with their description before making a choice in favor of one or another option.

In general, this type is divided into four main groups:

  • climbing roses;
  • rugose hybrid;
  • modern hybrid of rugosa;
  • park roses.

The first group includes several popular varieties.

  • "Quadra"... This climbing rose is capable of reaching one and a half meters in height. Long-lasting flowering. On one brush, as a rule, there are from one to three buds.
  • Felix Leclerc Rose. A rose created by Canadian breeders in 2007. Shoots are capable of reaching three meters in height.

It is worth noting that this plant does not need pruning that affects growth. The flowers are bright pink. Good frost resistance - up to -30 degrees.

  • John Davis. This rose is good because its flowering starts quite early and lasts a long time. If you sniff at its pink buds, you can smell a pleasant fruity aroma.
  • Champlain. Bred in 1982, the variety has excellent winter hardiness and immunity to many diseases. One brush can have from five to seven red buds. Sometimes the culture blooms until the onset of the first frost.

Rugosa hybrids include no less spectacular varieties.

  • Martin Frobisher. This variety was bred in 1971. It is a large wide bush up to one and a half meters high. Shoots are upright, almost entirely covered with medium-sized light pink buds.
  • Henry and Hudson. The bushes are not too tall (about one meter). However, they are usually used as a hedge. The shoots are completely covered in small white or red flowers.

Modern breeding has developed several hybrids.

  • Emily Carr. The variety was created relatively recently, in 2007. But it appeared on the shelves in 2010. It is very similar to varieties from the group of hybrid teas. Differs in red double petals and very tall bushes.
  • "Adelaide Hoodless"... The height of these winter-hardy plants varies from one to one and a half meters. There are dark green leaves around the small, bright flowers. Flowering usually occurs in the summer, but sometimes it occurs in early autumn.
  • Prairie Joy. The average height of the bush is one and a half meters. The bushes are completely covered with small bright pink flowers and neat green leaves. A big plus of this variety is its high frost resistance.
  • Morden Cardinet. A very small, compact bush (about half a meter high). Nevertheless, it is this factor that makes it especially attractive. The flowers are scarlet and have large double petals.
  • Morden Sunrise. The most popular variety of Canadian roses is Morden Sunrise. This is due to its unusual orange color and miniature size (one and a half meters high). All summer this variety pleases with its flowering. It also has good resistance to fungal diseases.

The most numerous group of all is the park rose. Consider the varieties that relate to it.

  • "William Buffin". The main advantage of this plant with bright pink flowers is that it has good resistance to some diseases. In addition, the flowers have a pleasant fruity aroma. The flowering period is in the summer. About twenty buds bloom at the same time.
  • John Cabot. The flowers are pale pink in color, they can be placed on one brush in five to ten pieces. The bush itself is very powerful and hardy, so it does not require global self-care. Summer bloom lasts no more than two months, and the next period begins in autumn. It is also worth noting frost resistance - this variety is excellent.
  • Henry Kelsey. This variety does not have good winter hardiness or disease resistance, however, it is considered quite popular among gardeners. This is due to attractive red flowers, of which there are from three to five pieces in one brush. With the right climate and care, the rose can grow up to four meters in height.
  • "Lac Majeu". This white rose is good because it has increased resistance to dangerous diseases. The cultivar resembles a rose hip, especially in smell. In the last stage of flowering, the crop produces small red berries.

The main feature of this variety is its extremely high winter hardiness. It is so high that it is not necessary to cover the plant for the winter period.

There is another subgroup called ground cover, but it is not mentioned so often. This subgroup includes a rose Snow Carpet. It is extremely small in size, one might even say miniature. In height, the culture usually reaches no more than fifteen centimeters. The shoots are completely covered with small white flowers that have no scent.

As for the choice of a variety for a specific region, first of all, it is worth paying attention to its resistance to low temperatures. An excellent option, for example, for the Moscow region, can be any of the unpretentious frost-resistant varieties.

General landing rules

The main thing to consider when planting a Canadian rose is its love for sunny places. It is recommended to stop your choice in well-ventilated and well-lit areas.

The first step is to prepare landing pit. Acceptable size - 70x70 centimeters. The prepared place should be covered with fertile non-acidic soil, as well as humus, peat and additional fertilizers. If the bush is grafted, then it is better to plant it to a depth of 5-10 centimeters. This distance will allow the root system to develop fully.

With the creation of a hedge, the gardener will have a little more difficulty. To do this, you need to perform several important steps.

For pruning cuttings, it is recommended to choose healthy annual shoots that are at least 20 centimeters long.

    1. All leaves are removed, except for two located at the very top.
    2. Then the cuttings follow land in a prepared trench, deepening them to the first sheet.
    3. Distance between the cuttings, you need to calculate based on the height of the future bushes - it should be exactly half of this figure.
    4. Once the plants are planted, they are worth cover with clear plastic bottles, and also a little shade with grass. So they need to be left for the whole winter.

    Subtleties of care

The Canadian rose is unpretentious in itself, but still no one canceled elementary care.

    1. Pruning. This procedure is recommended in early spring. This removes all damaged and dead plant parts.
    2. Top dressing. Nitrogen fertilization should be carried out in the spring, and phosphorus-potassium - in the middle of summer, after the summer flowering ends.
    3. Watering. Abundant watering is required for flowers only during feeding. The rest of the time, it should be moderate.

    Diseases and pests

Despite the fact that the Canadian rose is extremely resistant to diseases, it requires certain measures to prevent them.If the gardener noticed negative signs, then it is worthwhile to carry out the treatment as soon as possible. The most common among such roses are 4 types of diseases.

    • Powdery mildew. With this disease, a characteristic white bloom appears on the leaves. Some leaf deformation is also observed. For the treatment of powdery mildew, the bushes should be sprayed with special agents, for example, Topaz, Chistotsvet, Fundozol and others. The procedure can be repeated if necessary.
      • Rust. With such an ailment, a modification of the shoots is observed. To protect plants from this disease, excess nitrogenous fertilizers and excessive moisture should be avoided whenever possible. The land under the bushes must be loosened, and the fallen and affected leaves must be burned.
      • Black spot. This disease involves the formation of black spots on the leaves. To avoid infection, you should follow simple rules. First of all, this is the observance of all the rules of agricultural technology.

The destruction of fallen leaves is also important. And, of course, do not forget to spray the plants with specialized preparations, which must necessarily include copper.

        • Bacterial cancer. This is a very dangerous disease, in the presence of which dark growths are formed on the plant. As a rule, bacterial cancer develops with high humidity and root damage. If the plant has a damaged root collar, it should be destroyed. Neoplasms on the lateral roots must be cut off and burned.

Also, for treatment, you can use a 1% solution of copper sulfate - the cut roots must be immersed in it for 5 minutes.

All insects that can damage roots and other parts of plants should be destroyed.

        Ideas for modern landscape design

As you know, Canadian roses are often used in landscape design. Experts identify several options for decorating a garden with this type of flowers.

        • Rose hedges. For such hedges, it is best to purchase tall plants. To make the hedge bloom all year round and at the same time look beautiful, it is best to plant varieties of park roses. All plants must be of the same height. Roses will look amazing when planted against the backdrop of green bushes.
        • Curbs. Miniature roses are used to create borders. It is desirable that all planted flowers are of the same shade.
        • Flower beds. It all depends on the personal taste of the owners, so roses can be of any size, variety and color. However, it is best to use plants that are not too tall to form the perfect flower bed.
        • Geometric compositions. Roses with large buds are suitable for creating spectacular sculptures. Varieties and shades can be chosen for every taste, there are no special rules here.
        • Arches. Exceptionally climbing roses with small or large flowers are suitable for decorating arches.

Caring for a Canadian rose is not as difficult as it might seem at first glance. The main thing is to choose a variety suitable for the local climate and follow all the rules of care. All a plant needs is love and attention. Then it will delight you with its beauty for a long time.
