Many gardeners who plant different varieties of roses often think about how to preserve the planting material until the moment of planting. Experience shows that this can be done in different ways.

How to store it in the refrigerator?

It is most convenient to store the rose in the refrigerator until planting. Seedlings must first be wrapped with a wet cloth or placed in a container with wet moss. After that, the workpiece is placed in a small bag. It needs to be tied and transferred to the vegetable storage compartment. There it will be stored until the very moment of planting. The temperature in this compartment is optimal. Therefore, the seedlings will not die, but they will not grow.

The sprout roll should not be stored against the back of the refrigerator or on the door. In the first case, they can freeze. In the second, the seedlings will begin to grow faster. This is very bad for their condition.

It is also very easy to maintain seedlings with a closed root system. They are placed in the refrigerator along with the container. Do not remove the plant from the container until it is planted. It certainly won't do him any good. The container in which the purchased seedling is located must be wrapped in polyethylene. This will help maintain the correct moisture level in the container. Over time, the shoots may turn light green. But this is normal, so there is no need to worry about the quality of the planting material.

If seedlings of different roses are stored in the refrigerator, stickers must be attached to the bags or containers. Each of them must write the name of the variety.

Storage in boxes on the balcony

If there is no room for the seedlings in the refrigerator, they can be stored on the balcony. The main thing is that it is glazed. In order for the plants to stay as long as possible, they must be placed in a large box filled with a light, loose substrate. For its preparation, peat and sawdust are mixed in equal proportions. Seedlings are placed on top of this substrate.

Next, green plants are sprayed with settled water. Sprinkle them on top with the remnants of the nutrient substrate. In such conditions, plants can be stored for quite a long time, withstanding small changes in temperature.

If the winters in the region are very cold, then on frosty nights the seedlings must be covered or transferred to the house.

In early spring, the boxes can be taken out to the site. Next, the container must be placed in a hole dug back in the fall. Sprinkle the seedlings on top with a nutritious substrate. This is done due to the fact that with the onset of heat, the glazed balcony turns into a mini-greenhouse. Saplings in such conditions can begin to stretch.

other methods

There are other, equally common methods of storing shoots.

In the basement, cellar

This method is suitable for owners of suburban areas. In the basement, roses can be stored for several months. Therefore, blanks purchased in the fall are usually sent there.

The seedlings must be placed in any container of a suitable size. Next, the roses should be covered with dry sawdust or any other similar material. It is important that the root collar of the seedlings is in a shelter. If several plants are stored in one container at once, care must be taken that they do not come into contact with each other.

If water collects on the floor in the cellar, roses should be placed on a hill. After all, exposure to moisture has a negative effect on the condition of plants. Usually containers with flowers are placed on shelves or wooden pallets.

This storage method also has a drawback. After all the basement often contains other seedlings, as well as supplies of fruits and vegetables... Some of them can be the source of the disease. Therefore, it is very important to provide both seedlings and crops with the correct storage conditions. It is advisable to place roses away from all other crops. Flowers need to be checked from time to time. They should be free of any signs of rot, mold or any other sign of disease.

The day before transplanting seedlings into open ground, they must be removed from the cellar and left for a while in the shaded part of the yard. This will allow the plants to adapt to new conditions. Therefore, it will be easier for them to settle down after landing in a well-lit area.

In the bath

A bath with a sealed steam room can also be used as a place for storing rose seedlings, as well as tubers and bulbs of other flowers. The planting material is preliminarily placed in a box. She is sent to the steam room. There the box is placed on the floor and covered with a thick cloth or unnecessary things.

It is very important that the room is dark. In such a room, young roses can easily survive until spring.

In the snow

This is a rather unusual method of storing young seedlings. It is ideal for those who do not have an insulated balcony or free space in the basement.

Seedlings purchased or collected in the fall must be packed in a regular cardboard box. They need to be sprinkled with dry sawdust. After that, the container with the seedlings must be closed. To store roses, you need to choose the most shaded corner of the garden. In spring, moisture should not stagnate in this part of the territory.

It is there that it is worth placing a box with wintering seedlings. Wide boards can be placed under the container. From above it must be covered with agrospan or any similar material. Next, sprinkle the covered box with a thick layer of snow. The snowdrift should be large. Such a dense "blanket" will save the seedlings from the cold in winter. To delay the spring melting of snow, the snowdrift must be additionally covered with pine or spruce branches.

It will be possible to start planting plants in open ground after the snowdrift has completely melted. If at this time it is still cold on the site, they need to be planted under bottles or covered with any non-woven material on top.

At home

Separately, it is worth talking about the storage of blooming roses. Potted flowers are usually purchased in early spring. Until the moment of transplantation, they are stored for 20-25 days. At this time, they already look unsightly. But don't worry. After correct transplantation, the flower will recover very quickly.

Such roses are planted after the soil warms up. It is worth remembering that it is very difficult for such a plant to adapt to new conditions. Therefore, after planting in open ground, the plant will need shading. A flower in direct sunlight will quickly die.

What to do with sprouted seedlings?

Young seedlings, on which the first buds or full-fledged sprouts have already appeared, can also be well saved before planting. First of all, they must be immediately moved to an upright position. If the seedlings lie, they will still stretch upward. Because of this, the flowers will grow crooked after planting. This will negatively affect the appearance of the plant.

If there is no opportunity to plant roses in open ground in the near future, strong shoots on the shoots must be removed. If this is not done, they will take nutrients from the plant. They must be removed carefully, while being careful not to damage the stem.

If the sprouts on the seedlings are very small, the flowers can be kept for a couple of days in the refrigerator or cellar. But at the same time, the plants will need to be regularly checked, monitoring their development.

Some gardeners practice planting sprouted seedlings in separate small containers. The transplant process consists of the following steps.

  • Inspection of the plant. The first step is to examine the roots of the rose. If a plant with an open root system has dried out significantly, they need to be "revived" a little. For this, the seedlings are placed in a container with clean, settled water for 5-8 hours. Some gardeners add a small amount of a solution to stimulate root growth. This will increase the survival rate of seedlings in a new place. Dry or damaged parts of the rhizome are pre-cut with sharp scissors.
  • Choosing a container. The temporary container can be either plastic or ceramic. It is important that it is of the correct size. There should also be drainage holes at the bottom to drain water. In this case, the roots of the plant will definitely not rot over time. A small layer of perlite can be added to the bottom of the container.
  • Soil preparation. Selected containers should be filled with a mixture of loose garden soil, perlite and peat. The products should be mixed in a 2: 1: 2 ratio. The container is first filled with soil by a third, and then spilled with water. It should be warm and well kept.
  • Planting seedlings. Further, sprouted seedlings are placed in containers with settled soil. They must be installed straight, not tilted. From above, the seedling is covered with the remnants of the soil mixture. The soil is carefully tamped and watered again. For the plant to feel good, the ground must be mulched on top. In this case, moisture will be much better retained in the soil.

Store containers with flowers in a cool room. This will help keep the plants from growing. It will be possible to plant roses in open ground in late spring or early summer. At this time, the soil should already warm up well.

It should be noted that this option is not suitable for everyone. After all, after transplanting a flower into open ground, a person will have to take care of its condition. Plants will need to be protected from strong winds and bright sun. If something is done wrong, the flower will die under the scorching sun rays.

In general, the choice of a method for storing rose seedlings depends only on the preferences and capabilities of the grower. If you follow these simple tips, it will be very easy to keep the shoots in good condition, right up to the moment of planting.
