American varieties of tomatoes are not often found in domestic horticultural practice. However, they can be cultivated at a fairly high efficiency. And the Vorlon tomato is an eloquent confirmation of this thesis.

Breeding history

Vorlon was developed by breeders in the US state of Maine. This is a hybrid plant - to obtain it, I had to use the Cherokee Violet and Purple Prudena varieties. The culture has an official synonym for Vorlon.

Description of the variety

Vorlon is a solid indeterminate culture. It is intended for indoor cultivation. The bush reaches a height of 1.8 m. It is characterized by "potato" leaves.

The main qualities of the fruit

The crop can be used fresh and for obtaining tomato juice. Ripe berries are brown or purple-black in color. Their mass reaches 0.5 kg. The fruit is round, and its characteristic flattening is also noted.

Taste characteristics

The pulp of the fruit is soft and tender. It is distinguished by its expressive sweetness. The taste is well balanced and harmonious. Acidity is present anyway, but does not produce an unpleasant effect. The pulp literally "melts" in the mouth; such fruits are recommended to be used for sandwiches, sauces, juicing, but they are incomparable in fresh form.

Ripening and fruiting

The variety belongs to the mid-season category. You have to wait for the fruit to come out 80-95 days after the green shoots have hatched.

Yield

The fertility of Vorlon tomatoes is quite high. But according to other sources, it is only slightly more than the average level. Each brush forms 5-6 berries. Therefore, plants urgently require support.

The timing of planting seedlings and planting in the ground

Properly prepared seedlings should be planted in the soil between May 10 and 20. Of course, weather conditions, the degree of heating of the earth and the condition of the seedling bushes themselves can greatly affect the timing. The pick is made at the phase of 2 true leaves. Seeds can be taken from previously ripe fruits. They are planted in containers 60-65 days prior to the expected transplant into the open land.

Growing tomato seedlings is an extremely important process, because it largely depends on whether the gardener can harvest at all. All aspects must be taken into account, from seedbed preparation to planting in the ground.

Landing scheme

The Vorlon is planted according to the rule of 500x500 mm. For 1 sq. m you can plant 3 plants. If you form a tomato into 1 stem, then it is permissible to plant another bush in the same area.

Planting a tomato is a very important and painstaking business. In order to get a good harvest of tomatoes, you need to competently approach the issue of planting. When planting a tomato in the ground, it is necessary to take into account many factors - correctly determine the timing, prepare the soil, correctly calculate the distance between plants, take into account the rules of crop rotation.

Growing and care

Care measures are important, such as:

  • top dressing;

  • systematic watering;

  • pinching;

  • prevention of diseases and pest infestations.

Tomato Vorlon responds well to drip irrigation. With this approach, not only high productivity is ensured, but also the risk of late blight is significantly reduced. The rest of the rules do not differ from caring for other types of tomatoes. Local garter is highly recommended. For feeding, it is worth using manure or another organic type of fertilizer.

When using branded seeds, disinfection is not required. For the effective cultivation of seedlings, it is necessary to use the protection of the boxes - film or glass. The greenhouse should be kept at a temperature of 22 to 25 degrees Celsius. It is required to remove the film as soon as the growth of seedlings reaches 1 cm. Excessive humidity must be avoided, and therefore one cannot do without systematic ventilation of the greenhouse.

The heat-loving Vorlon often leads to its weakening and diseases after transplanting into open ground. Therefore, it is better to do this at a later date than at an earlier date, and in any case, it is necessary to take care of the planted plants. The hardening of seedlings before planting is of great help. Optimum readiness for transplanting into open ground is achieved when the bushes have 9-10 leaves; to simplify tying the bushes helps their staggered arrangement.

When forming, all side shoots must be removed. Only one stepson is supposed to be left on the main stem. The first top dressing in the open field is carried out on the 10-14th day. At this point, it is advisable to use rotted manure. Such a make-up must certainly be combined with intensive watering.

Watering tomatoes is not difficult. After planting, the plant is watered at such intervals that the soil remains moist. In dry weather, when it does not rain for a long time, watering can be carried out every day, but usually the beds with tomatoes are irrigated 2-3 times a week.
The methods of tying tomato bushes can vary significantly, depending on the availability of available material, the method of fixation, and also the variety. In general, it is recommended to adhere to the following scheme: first, the central stems are grabbed, and then, as the fruits ripen, the lateral branches.
One of the important conditions for tomato agricultural technology is the correct formation of the bush. The formation of tomato bushes means performing the following steps: pinching, pinching, trimming the leaves, normalizing the ovaries.

A plant needs different micronutrients at each stage of growth. All fertilizers can be divided into two groups: mineral and organic. Folk remedies are often used: iodine, yeast, bird droppings, eggshells.

It is important to observe the rate and period of feeding. This also applies to folk remedies and organic fertilizers.

Treatment and prevention of diseases and pests
When growing tomatoes in a greenhouse, diseases often occur due to a violation of the temperature regime and excessive humidity. The most common diseases are fungal (late blight, cladosporium, rot).
The fight against diseases and pests of tomatoes in open areas can be quite difficult. This is because nightshades are exposed to a wide variety of pathogens and insect pests.
