The climatic conditions of the Mediterranean countries are much more comfortable for tomatoes than the Russian Federation. Therefore, their own selection school is highly developed in them. One of the fruits of her work is the Rome tomato, which deserves the utmost attention.

Description of the variety

This plant was created in Italy. Therefore, its official name - Rim - should not cause any surprise. Such a tomato develops its bushes according to an indeterminate system. It can be grown mainly in greenhouses. Rome grows up to 1.8-2 m, forms strong bushes covered with leaves of the usual type.

The main qualities of the fruit

They are characterized by:

  • Red color;

  • very large size;

  • usual weight from 0.3 to 0.6 kg;

  • the largest recorded mass is 1.5 kg;

  • flat circle shape;

  • ribs are wide.

Taste characteristics

The fruit of Rome has a pleasant sweetness. Its flesh is fleshy, which only increases the final gastronomic score. The taste has a sour note. But it does not impair the general perception in the least.

Ripening and fruiting

The variety belongs to the mid-season group. Under normal conditions, between discarding green shoots and the formation of a ready-to-harvest crop, 112-125 days pass. Fruiting will last for a relatively long time. However, it is necessary to take into account all those factors that usually affect the productivity of planted tomatoes.

Yield

The weather and agronomic measures are, of course, reflected at the level of berry picking. There are 12-14 kg of tomatoes per 1 m2. The specific result in a specific year may be less or even slightly more, but the average annual rate is maintained confidently.

The timing of planting seedlings and planting in the ground

The mid-season nature of the variety makes it planted at the end of winter or at the very beginning of spring. One has only to be a little late - and you will no longer be able to take advantage of all the benefits of this culture. Usually, it takes 50-60 days from planting seeds in containers to transshipment of finished seedlings into the ground. It is better to stick to a higher figure so that the plants really get stronger and develop well. At the time of landing, the ground should warm up to at least 14 degrees, and the air at least 18 degrees.

Growing tomato seedlings is an extremely important process, because it largely depends on whether the gardener will be able to harvest at all. All aspects must be taken into account, from seedbed preparation to planting in the ground.

Landing scheme

It is necessary to distribute the holes on the site according to the 500x600 mm system. For 1 sq. m should have a maximum of 3 bushes. You can limit yourself to two plants in order to simplify your work, and eliminate mutual interference.

Planting a tomato is a very important and painstaking business. In order to get a good harvest of tomatoes, you need to competently approach the issue of planting. When planting a tomato in the ground, it is necessary to take into account many factors - correctly determine the timing, prepare the soil, correctly calculate the distance between plants, take into account the rules of crop rotation.

Growing and care

The formation of Mediterranean guest bushes should go in 2 or 3 stems. The choice between these options is made by the gardeners themselves, taking into account their assessment of the situation. It is necessary to remove excess stepchildren every 10 or 12 days. The bushes are watered once every 3 days, using 6 to 8 liters of settled water. It makes sense to exceed this norm only in extreme heat.

Top dressing must be applied exactly 1 time in 15 days. This is in any case required to be done when the tomato blooms or ripens. Another important condition for success is attachment to trellises or other strong supports. However, this is a general requirement for any indeterminate tomato. It is necessary to sow seeds in loose soil, characterized by fertility.

In order for the seedlings to develop better, it is necessary:

  • spray it with settled water using a spray bottle;

  • feed "Kemira" or "Agricola";

  • illuminate with phytolamp for up to 12-14 hours;

  • dive seedlings into tanks with a capacity of 0.3 liters when 2 or 3 true leaves appear.

Tomato Rome hardly suffers from heat and even drought. Its natural immunity is quite high. But during the rains, the danger of fungal attack increases. Irrigation with Bordeaux liquid and spraying with "Fitosporin" at a concentration of 1% help to avoid this. Pretreatment of seeds (with hydrogen peroxide) and soil (spilling with a dull pink solution of potassium permanganate) also helps to increase the productivity of the plant.

Watering tomatoes is not difficult. After planting, the plant is watered at such intervals that the soil remains moist. In dry weather, when there is no rain for a long time, watering can be carried out every day, but usually the beds with tomatoes are irrigated 2-3 times a week.
The methods of tying tomato bushes can vary significantly, depending on the availability of available material, the method of fixation, and also the variety. In general, it is recommended to adhere to the following scheme: first, the central stems are grabbed, and then, as the fruits ripen, the lateral branches.
One of the important conditions for tomato agricultural technology is the correct formation of the bush. The formation of tomato bushes means performing the following steps: pinching, pinching, trimming the leaves, normalizing the ovaries.

A plant needs different micronutrients at each stage of growth. All fertilizers can be divided into two groups: mineral and organic. Folk remedies are often used: iodine, yeast, bird droppings, eggshells.

It is important to observe the rate and period of feeding. This also applies to folk remedies and organic fertilizers.

Treatment and prevention of diseases and pests
When growing tomatoes in a greenhouse, diseases often occur due to a violation of the temperature regime and excessive humidity. The most common diseases are fungal (late blight, cladosporium, rot).
The fight against diseases and pests of tomatoes in open areas can be quite difficult. This is because nightshades are exposed to a wide variety of pathogens and insect pests.

Review overview

Farmers note that the ripening of the crop at home occurs without any significant problems. The taste and juiciness of the fruit is pleasing. The number of berries may not always be large, but they themselves reach a large size. The variety also attracts attention with its uniqueness.The culinary perspectives are very broad.
