A huge collection of tomatoes is annually replenished with interesting novelties, which breeders from different countries are working on. Many new and already tested samples are of Russian origin. Among them is the determinant tomato Banana Legs (synonym - Banana Legs). The versatile variety has good transportability and is intended for cultivation in open ground and in greenhouses. The fruits are eaten fresh, put in salads, and preserved from them.

Breeding history

The authorship in the cultivation of the variety belongs to V.I. Blokin-Mechtalin, and Banana Legs was approved for use in 2019.

Description of the variety

Strongly branched bushes of Banana legs grow in open ground up to 80-90 cm, in more protected conditions of greenhouses they are much higher - on average 1.2 m.The bush needs support, since it grows many rather weak shoots that are not able to grow up even without the severity of the fruits, at the time of filling they will completely fall. The tendency to form a large number of stepsons requires their constant removal, otherwise the bush will turn into impassable thickets, dotted with small fruits.

The stems are covered with green leaves of medium length. The variety lays simple inflorescences - the first over 9-11 leaves, all subsequent ones - after 2-3 leaves. Yellow tomato flowers are funnel-shaped and are collected in clusters of 8-12 pieces. Compliance with the rules of agricultural technology guarantees an almost one hundred percent ovary without shedding color, moreover, the variety is very decorative during the ripening of the fruit.

The main qualities of the fruit

Small cylindrical fruits with a tuberous surface have a strongly elongated nose with a slight deviation to the side. The weight of the tomato is 80 grams, the color of the unripe fruit is light green with vertical striping, at the time of maturity it becomes a rich yellow-orange with noticeable pinkish blotches.

Taste characteristics

The dietary fruits of the Banana Legs variety have an original milk-tomato flavor with light hints of lemon. Tomatoes are lightly juiced, which allows them to be used for drying, getting an amazingly tasty preparation for appetizers and seasonings

Ripening and fruiting

The variety belongs to the ultra-early category: the ripening period is 90-95 days, the fruiting is extended, wavy, if we allow the partial growth of stepchildren. When grown in cold regions, fruit ripening shifts closer to autumn.

Yield

The variety is distinguished by high yields: with good agricultural technology, up to five kilograms of fruit are removed from the bush, and up to 17.8 kg from a square meter. The active cultivation of tomatoes leads to an overload of the bushes, so they need a stable support.

The timing of planting seedlings and planting in the ground

The ultra-early ripening period makes it possible to grow the variety in the southern regions by direct sowing into the ground; in colder areas, grown seedlings are planted in the ground. The timing of sowing seeds for seedlings is the end of March or the beginning of April for growing in open ground, while for greenhouses, the dates are shifted closer to the winter months. It is recommended to pre-treat the seeds with ready-made stimulants ("Epin-Extra", "Zircon", "HB-101") or a solution of potassium permanganate 1: 100.

After sowing, it is recommended to arrange a greenhouse by covering the container with glass or film. Germination and subsequent care before planting in the garden is carried out in a warm place. Before planting, the seedlings are hardened: they are left to spend the night in the cold, they are adapted to the sun. The approximate timing of disembarkation of seedlings is in 60-65 days.

Growing tomato seedlings is an extremely important process, because it largely depends on whether the gardener can harvest at all. All aspects must be taken into account, from seedbed preparation to planting in the ground.

Landing scheme

A well-lit place is prepared for planting, holes are dug according to the scheme of 4 bush per square meter.

Planting a tomato is a very important and painstaking business. In order to get a good harvest of tomatoes, you need to competently approach the issue of planting. When planting a tomato in the ground, it is necessary to take into account many factors - correctly determine the timing, prepare the soil, correctly calculate the distance between plants, take into account the rules of crop rotation.

Growing and caring

The soil is enriched with organic matter, wood ash, superphosphate, the depth of the holes is traditional - on the bayonet of a shovel. The overgrown stems of the seedlings are carefully twisted in a spiral and laid on the bottom of the hole, after which the earth is filled up, having previously installed a support. The stem can be slightly buried, the earth must be compacted and shed well.

In the early days, the plant needs shading if the weather is hot. Subsequent care will require timely watering, fertilization, weeding, loosening. In addition, the variety needs pinching and shaping - from 2-3 to 5 stems. Mullein infusion, phosphorus-containing fertilizers during the ripening period are used as top dressings. The tendency to actively build up vegetative mass recommends the limited use of nitrogen-containing formulations.

Growing in greenhouses imposes the same agrotechnical requirements, with the exception of the mandatory ventilation of the space on hot days. During prolonged heat, plants can suffer from overheating, so you need to carefully monitor the temperature inside the greenhouse, perhaps shade it.

Watering tomatoes is not difficult. After planting, the plant is watered at such intervals that the soil remains moist. In dry weather, when it does not rain for a long time, watering can be carried out every day, but usually the beds with tomatoes are irrigated 2-3 times a week.
The methods of tying tomato bushes can vary significantly, depending on the availability of available material, the method of fixation, and also the variety. In general, it is recommended to adhere to the following scheme: first, the central stems are grabbed, and then, as the fruits ripen, the lateral branches.
One of the important conditions for tomato agricultural technology is the correct formation of the bush. The formation of tomato bushes means performing the following steps: pinching, pinching, trimming the leaves, normalizing the ovaries.

A plant needs different micronutrients at each stage of growth. All fertilizers can be divided into two groups: mineral and organic. Folk remedies are often used: iodine, yeast, bird droppings, eggshells.

It is important to observe the rate and period of feeding. This also applies to folk remedies and organic fertilizers.

Disease and pest resistance

The variety has excellent immunity, but it can suffer from apical rot during sudden temperature changes. Preventive treatments with Fitosporin solution are required.Banana legs are prone to fattening - a likely cause may be excessive feeding.

Treatment and prevention of diseases and pests
When growing tomatoes in a greenhouse, diseases often occur due to a violation of the temperature regime and excessive humidity. The most common diseases are fungal (late blight, cladosporium, rot).
The fight against diseases and pests of tomatoes in open areas can be quite difficult. This is because nightshades are exposed to a wide variety of pathogens and insect pests.

Resistant to adverse weather conditions

The variety is cold-resistant and drought-resistant, however, during the dry season, tomatoes need timely watering.

Growing regions

The variety is adapted for almost the entire territory of Russia. It is grown in all regions of the country. Culture will be no less popular in Moldova, Ukraine, Belarus.
