Nowadays, the walk-behind tractor is not only a popular agricultural machine. It is also the foundation for making a variety of homemade units. The category of the latter includes an all-terrain vehicle or, as it is also called, an ATV, as well as a karakat. Any of the mentioned motor vehicles will find application in regions with difficult climatic conditions and simply among adherents of extreme sports. You can create an ATV with your own hands from a walk-behind tractor on pneumatics and tracks. Consider the advantages and disadvantages of each type.

How to re-equip equipment?

An all-terrain vehicle in the traditional sense is a vehicle designed to move along muddy roads and highways, regardless of their surface. The all-terrain vehicle from the walk-behind tractor is characterized by small dimensions and light weight.

Before embarking on the conversion process, you need to navigate the individual aspects. You can create a crawler or pneumatic unit. At the same time, the tracked structure is more ingenious, and it is necessary to know and understand how to operate it.

The next thing that needs to be clarified is where and how the unit will be used, how much capacity, and also what load it can move on itself. Having dealt with these questions, you can start creating a drawing of the future unit.

The motor should not be taken either. It must certainly be with forced cooling. Choose motoblocks that have an air or water cooling system. The engine must be powerful enough to be able to move around any terrain without problems.

To use your homemade ATV in winter, choose a 4-stroke motor. It has excellent performance in subzero temperatures.

Structure

The basic nodes used to create a 4x4 all-terrain vehicle, in addition to the walk-behind tractor itself, are represented by such components:

  • frame, which will be the basis of the unit;
  • rear axle for installing a second pair of wheels;
  • driver's seat;
  • lighting devices that enable safe movement at night.

Such units are vehicles designed for one person. The average bearing capacity of motor vehicles is approximately 200 kilograms. The width of the chassis is determined by the required stability before overturning, but it is advisable to make it at least 1.1 meters. Among motoblocks with an engine, it is desirable to use units of the companies "Ugra", "Neva", maybe others with a capacity of 10 horsepower or more. Such characteristics of power are enough to move faster than 10 km / h. During movement along muddy roads on viscous or slippery ground, it drops to 2-3 km / h.

Creation of a wheeled unit

First of all, it is advisable to equip standard engines with a reduction gearbox. This is due to the fact that the acceptable torque for both diesel engines and carburetor engines occurs at 80% of the maximum crankshaft rotation speed.

In addition, the motor must be equipped with a forced cooling system.The bottom line is that the movement will be carried out at low speeds, and the incoming air flow is not enough to create an operating temperature regime for the engine.

Frame

First, you need to create a frame that will be located between the front and rear axles. For this task, profile pipes with a square section are taken. Such components are characterized by a high degree of rigidity. When using heavy motor vehicles of the "Neva" or "MTZ" type, rigid frame joining is often performed. Due to this, the all-terrain vehicle will come out in one volume.

Another option is to use the so-called fracture (breaking frame), which gives great advantages when operating the unit on terrain with rugged terrain. In such a situation, the connection will be made through the king pin. At the same time, both bridges will be equipped with independent suspension.

To move through the forests for hunting, it is possible to make a swamp-going vehicle on the basis of a walk-behind tractor, equipped with a breaking frame. Compared to all-terrain vehicles on a rigid frame, it is endowed with a higher cross-country ability.

Rear axle and suspension system

The easiest way is to use ready-made components from an old passenger car, for example, Moskvich 412, for the manufacture of the rear axle. This is due to the low weight of such elements, which makes it possible to practice them for the manufacture of an all-terrain vehicle. For a measured stroke, the suspension system is carried out on shock absorbers, which additionally reduces the vibration of the body. In order to reduce fuel consumption and reduce resistance when driving through a territory with difficult conditions for movement, it is advisable to make an independent suspension system for each rear wheel individually. To prevent a greater level of swaying, it is necessary to tie the frame to the rear axle, for this, use hardened bolts, and for the connections to be elastic, use rubber inserts.

Wheels

To enhance the adhesion of the wheels to the roadway, especially in swampy areas, an all-terrain vehicle is used on low-pressure tires. Such wheels, due to the low pressure on the soil, make it possible to make the movement of the ATV on the cameras extremely soft. For this, specialized wheels from large swamp snowmobiles are used. Equally, they can be made on their own, which is implemented in this way:

  1. to make homemade discs, you must weld standard discs with auxiliary mounting plates;
  2. then a large camera is put on the enlarged disk and pumped up;
  3. the manufactured wheels are installed on the unit.

To increase the cross-country ability and coupling of the wheels to the ground, you should cut out peculiar lugs from the tires and install them on the cameras.

Step by step assembly

We assemble our version of the all-terrain vehicle from the prepared spare parts. This process includes the following steps:

  1. the walk-behind tractor itself is installed on the prepared frame;
  2. then the rear axle is fastened;
  3. the driver's seat is being installed;
  4. if provided by the drawing, the steering is mounted;
  5. the lower area of ​​the frame is covered with plastic or iron sheet protection;
  6. the test of the brake system is carried out;
  7. lighting fixtures are installed, electrical wiring is forwarded.

All components or assemblies must be tested for correct function during manufacture.

Tracked mini all-terrain vehicle

Before starting work, orient yourself with the toolkit. We can state with absolute certainty that you will need:

  • a variety of screwdrivers;
  • hammer;
  • electric welding;
  • a device for bending pipes (if there is no prepared frame).

    Before creating drawing materials, familiarize yourself with the typical structure.

    1. Frame. Any tracked snowmobile has a frame: the more sophisticated the structure, the stronger and more reliable the frame must be. The ideal option is to borrow from a scooter, ATV or motorcycle. If there is no such element, you can weld it yourself from steel pipes with a diameter of at least 40 millimeters.
    2. Sitting. The ATV seat needs to be sturdy as the structure itself is rather low. An indispensable condition: it must be made of a moisture-proof material.
    3. Motor. When choosing a motor, focus on its resource. If you want the all-terrain vehicle to be powerful, then the motor must be the same.
    4. Fuel tank. A tank with a capacity of 10-15 liters, made of iron, is ideal for a fuel tank.
    5. Skis. If you do not have ready-made skis that can be adapted for an all-terrain vehicle, you can create them yourself from wood. It is desirable that it be 9-ply plywood, no less.
    6. Steering wheel. When choosing a steering wheel, think about your comfort. It is desirable that it be borrowed from two-wheeled vehicles.
    7. Caterpillars. Making caterpillars is probably a particularly difficult task.
    8. Actuator. In order for the tracks to spin, you need a power drive - preferably a motorcycle chain for this option.

    Frame

    If a completely finished frame is not available, then it is simply welded from a profiled pipe, and the configuration is given by means of a pipe bending device.

    When the frame is finished, treat it with an anti-corrosive solution and paint it with high quality paint that can withstand both moisture and winter frost.

    Caterpillars

    Everyone who once created a tracked all-terrain vehicle on their own declares: the creation of tracks is the most difficult procedure.

    The easiest way to make them is from car tires. This method is very profitable - durable and low-cost. The component is made in a closed circle, for this reason, a tire rupture cannot happen.

    Let's take a look at the guide to creating tracks, they can be done in two ways.

    From car tire:

    • take the tire and cut the sides (use a sharp knife);
    • it is necessary to cut it so that the bendable part with the protector remains.

      From the conveyor belt:

      • cut off the desired piece of tape;
      • we sew the edges with a thread from a fishing line;
      • we fold into a ring, we sew the ends;
      • we fix the lugs on the made canvas, in their role we use plastic pipes with a diameter of at least 40 millimeters (cut along);
      • we fix the pipes to the canvas with screws.
