Camping with barbecue is a favorite folk tradition. And each has a barbecue: portable or stationary. The presence of a canopy over the barbecue will protect from the scorching sun and hide from sudden rain. If you build a canopy according to the rules, it will decorate the landscape design and become a cozy resting place for the whole family.

Features and benefits

The structure of the canopy can be small, located directly above the barbecue, or high, on supports covering the recreation area and the cooking area.

A barbecue shed is usually built separately, but in an area subject to frequent winds, some attach it to a house, utility block or other buildings, which is prohibited for safety reasons. In such areas, it is better to build one or more walls near the barbecue oven, which will solve the problem with the wind and make the canopy more comfortable. The height of the roof of such a building should be at least two meters; the material for the supports is chosen fire-resistant. Wooden poles are impregnated with a special protective solution and installed at the maximum possible distance from open fire.

A roof over your head while relaxing with barbecue will protect you from climatic surprises. And if the canopy is made original and placed near shady trees, rest in such a place will become pleasant and unforgettable.

Frame: execution options

Sheds do not have to be built, they can be purchased for summer cottages and private estates already ready-made. This will save time and effort, but may not match the site's design, personal preferences and tastes. Those who decide to make a canopy on their own should decide which structure is needed: a compact one, which is located above the barbecue itself, or made in the form of a gazebo, a terrace. Any of the structures must be strengthened, otherwise the structure will sag and give a slope. Usually, in such cases, a columnar foundation is used.

Before erecting the frame, you need to choose a suitable place, pay attention to the wind rose and arrange the structure so that the wind does not blow out the fire and smoke does not go into the house.

Even a compact version of the canopy should have a roof protruding half a meter from all sides of the barbecue. The standard size of a tall building is 4x4 meters. The choice of material for construction is influenced not only by harmonious reunification with the surrounding area, but also by financial capabilities.

There are three types of frame for awnings.

Wood

For timber supports, logs, beams and directly tree trunks are used. Pine timber without black streaks is well suited. Their presence indicates an extract of resin, which makes the wood hygroscopic and prone to decay.

Wooden poles are easy to handle, install, do not require special tools and a lot of experience. The awnings look nice and are suitable for any terrain, especially those with vegetation.

But the tree is not ideal for structures built near open fire. In addition, it is prone to rotting, fungal attack, and can become food for rodents and insects. Such troubles can be dealt with with the help of modern effective impregnations, which will make the wood more fire-resistant and durable.

    Metal

    Metal racks for a large canopy are quite acceptable, and a roof made of such material will heat up in the sun. Iron supports can be combined with any kind of roof.

      For small metal structures, a frame and a roof over the barbecue are made. The racks are reinforced on three sides with transverse partitions that pass in the places of the brazier.

      The metal is fire-resistant and durable, quite budgetary if you do the work yourself. Barbecues with awnings can serve for several generations. But the material also has its drawbacks:

      • It gets very hot in the sun, makes noise from rain and wind.
      • It must be treated against corrosion and a protective layer applied.
      • For installation, you will need a welding machine, special tools.

      Stone

      Stone sheds include capital structures made of concrete, brick or stone. They look expensive and beautiful. In the future, in the area of the stove or barbecue, one to three walls can be erected to protect the open fire from the wind.

      The stone canopy is reliable and durable, it is not afraid of fire, ultraviolet radiation, precipitation, decay, corrosion, rodents and insects. The material does not need finishing, future repairs and additional care. The disadvantage of this design is the high price and complexity of construction.

      Coating: pros and cons

      A number of requirements are imposed on the canopy over the barbecue: durability, strength, fire resistance, protection from the sun and rain, beautiful appearance.

      The shape and material of the building should be combined with the rest of the buildings of the site, and not bring disharmony into the landscape design.

      You can choose an arched roof, one- or gable, domed, hip, the main thing is that there is a slope, and precipitation does not linger. The roof design depends on financial capabilities.

      Different types of materials are used for the roof:

      • wood;
      • metal;
      • polycarbonate;
      • corrugated board.

      Wood

      Wood is an environmentally friendly material, it is pleasant to be under such a roof in the summer heat, it gives a stable natural shade, which cannot be said about metal or synthetic roofing. Wood has an affordable price, it is represented on the market by a wide range, it can be purchased with blanks of the required size, which will facilitate the construction of a canopy. The wood is easy to process and assembled with other materials. The canopy with a wooden roof blends in with the natural landscape of the site.

      The disadvantages include instability to the external environment and the fact that wood is not "friendly" with fire. To give it resistance to climatic influences and relative fire resistance, the wood is impregnated with special solutions.

      Metal

      The metal roof can be welded to the barbecue as a small canopy directly above the work area. Forged products in this design are very beautiful. The second option is a structure made in the form of a terrace (roof on supports). Under such a roof, you can put a table or arrange a firebox. Iron structures are heat-resistant, strong and durable.

      But metal also has its drawbacks: it weighs a lot, is too noisy in the rain and gets very hot in the sun. In the heat, it will not be comfortable to be under such a roof, therefore, it is better to use metal in compact structures, to install a canopy directly above the barbecue. It is more difficult to mount an iron canopy than a wooden one; you will need special tools: a welding machine, a drill, a screwdriver.

      Polycarbonate

      Beautiful and comfortable polymer roofing material is very popular among the population, has many positive qualities:

      • It is reliable, durable, does not rot, does not rust.
      • Resistant to any climatic conditions.
      • It is easy to install.
      • Polycarbonate is flexible enough, plastic, it is possible to create arched roofs and structures of unusual shapes from it.
      • It is lightweight.
      • The transparent structure of the material allows for good natural light under the canopy.
      • Polycarbonate is relatively inexpensive.
      • Has a rich color range.
      • It is durable, with a protective layer, it can last up to 50 years.

      When choosing a material for a canopy, one should take into account the illumination of the place where the structure will stand. Light, transparent polycarbonate transmits a lot of UV light. If you need shade, it is better to choose dark matte looks.

      Corrugated board

      Decking, or metal profiles, are used to create fences, roof coverings. If it has already found its application on the site, it is better to make a canopy from the same material. Its advantages are obvious:

      • light weight;
      • resistance to atmospheric precipitation;
      • durability;
      • ease of installation and processing;
      • strength;
      • fire resistance, does not evaporate toxic substances when heated;
      • the possibility of combining with other materials;
      • large selection of colors;
      • coating with a special polymer that protects against corrosion, chemical attack, burnout.

      The disadvantages include the ability to heat up in the sun, which will not be the best option for the southern regions. In addition, it does not transmit light and does not bend like polycarbonate.

      We do it ourselves: what to consider?

      Having decided to build a canopy with your own hands, you should start by choosing a suitable place on your personal plot. The beautiful landscape, good wind direction, distance from home, the presence of a comfortable shade and the proximity of water are taken into account.

      According to fire safety rules, a structure with an open fire must stand at a distance of six meters from the house. If you take into account the comfortable component, it is better to build a shed in a place where you can easily and quickly deliver food, water, dishes.

      Having decided on the place of construction, you should make construction drawings, choose materials and make markings on the ground.

      Any canopy, even a compact one, requires the construction of a foundation. To create it, pits with a diameter of half a meter and a depth of 50-70 cm are dug on four sides. Then you should lay out the cavities of the holes in one and a half bricks, reinforce and install supports. Pour the pillars with prepared concrete mortar. The clarity of the design is checked by the building level.

      The foundation can be poured using formwork (later on, it is removed). You can install an asbestos or metal pipe on a crushed stone pillow and pour concrete. The options for fundamental strengthening of the supports depend on the racks themselves.

      The cemented structure must dry completely. This takes a different amount of time depending on the season and weather. The minimum time frame is three days.

      Work on the frame, depending on the material of the racks, takes place in different ways:

      1. Metal requires welding.
      2. The tree can be easily assembled by yourself.
      3. Brick and stone are laid with cement.

      At the next stage, crossbeams are attached to the top of the racks around the perimeter, which will become the basis for the rafters, their material is selected in advance. Boards are mounted to the crossbeams, the distance between which should not be more than a meter, otherwise the roof may not withstand the onslaught of snow in winter. The rafters are sheathed with a crate on which the selected roofing material is laid (wood, polycarbonate, corrugated board).

      The chimney can be constructed from tin, start to be removed from a distance of half a meter from the barbecue and end with an elevation above the roof. Above the pipe, it is necessary to protect against precipitation from tin.

      The built canopy can be used not only for a stationary oven. A portable grill taken from the barn for a picnic also needs a good place. It's nice if this place becomes a canopy that protects from the scorching sun.
