Cyclops cabbage - the culture is already elderly, due to which it managed to win the love of summer residents. Also known to farmers under the name Zyklop. Cyclops is often chosen for its excellent taste and high yield.

Breeding history

This variety appeared in Japan in the 2000s. The breeders of the agronomic company SAKATA worked on it. In 2011, the vegetable arrived in our country and became available for mass cultivation.

Description of the variety

The type of cabbage in question is not classified as independent varieties, but as hybrids. It is adapted by specialists for cultivation in the open field.

Characteristics of the appearance of the plant and heads of cabbage

The deciduous rosette of the Cyclops is raised. Moderate in size, gray-green round leaves are poorly covered with bubbles. The edge of the leaf is slightly wavy. The inner and outer stumps are medium in length. The head of cabbage is round-flat in shape, does not take up much space. Inside it is painted pale yellow, outside it is green. The texture is dense (4 points) and juicy. Each specimen weighs approximately 1.2-1.9 kilograms. If the balance of temperature and humidity is observed, this cabbage can be stored for a long time, up to a couple of months.

Purpose and taste

The hybrid under consideration is applicable not only raw and as part of a variety of first and second courses, but also for fermentation. Tasters note the sweet taste of the thin leaves (sugar in this variety is about 8%) with a little bit of pungency. The vegetable crunches pleasantly, is rich in carotene and vitamin C.

Ripening terms

The culture is included in the category of mid-season. The ripening period starts 100-135 days after planting. Farmers can harvest in August-September.

Yield

With careful care, the hybrid exhibits high productivity. On average, a summer resident can count on 186-339 centners per hectare.

Growing regions

This culture is widespread in the Urals, in the Central region, in the North Caucasus.

Growing and care

Sowing seeds for seedlings begins in the second decade of March or early April. On the eve of the procedure, the planting material is immersed in potassium permanganate for disinfection for a while, and then kept in a special liquid that accelerates the growth of the plant.

Cabbage is planted in containers in which humus and turf are mixed. The seeds are immersed in the formed grooves by 1 centimeter, crushed and wrapped with a film. Water systematically. The room should be very light and warm. When shoots form, the vegetable is moved to a cooler room (there should be no more than 16 degrees). Subsequently, the plant is tempered for a week.

Young plants are moved to a permanent place of growth approximately in mid-May, at an air temperature of at least 18 degrees. It is advisable to do this when it is cloudy outside. Each well is thoroughly irrigated beforehand. When planting, they try to maintain a distance between plants equal to 50 centimeters. A distance of 60 centimeters is left between the rows.

In the first week after planting, the hybrid is provided with shade, as the sun can affect it negatively. Watering is carried out a couple of times a week in clear weather, in wet weather - a little less often. Water for irrigation is pre-heated. Watering is stopped a couple of weeks before harvesting mature vegetables. After moistening the soil, it should be loosened. About once every 2-3 weeks, the culture needs to be hilled.

During the growing season of the Cyclops, fertilizers are introduced three times. A couple of weeks after planting - nitrogen. When half of summer has passed - phosphorus, nitrogen and potassium. 30 days before harvesting - potash and phosphorus complexes. Harvesting is planned on a clear, cloudy day. The vegetable is cut with a knife so that only a stump of 2-3 centimeters long remains.

To grow a rich cabbage crop, you need to know when and how to plant this crop outdoors. Planting dates are determined depending on the variety. It is also necessary to properly prepare the soil and follow the rules of crop rotation.

Proper watering is a prerequisite for agricultural technology when growing cabbage. This vegetable crop prefers regular watering, the frequency of which depends on weather conditions, soil composition, cabbage variety and other characteristics.
Cabbage, like many other vegetables, needs regular hilling. This procedure performs several functions at once: it makes the plants stronger, protects the crop from diseases and pests, retains moisture in the soil, and increases the yield of the crop.

Soil requirements

Cyclops feels comfortable in loose soil with neutral acidity and good fertility. It is good if beans, cucumbers, garlic, carrots, onions, and potatoes were previously cultivated in the garden allotted for cabbage.

Cabbage requires particularly careful care when growing. The plant quickly absorbs nutrients, so the soil needs to be enriched regularly. Adequate amounts of minerals, organics and nitrogen must be provided. Some products can be purchased at the store, while others are easy to make at home.

Required climatic conditions

When deciding on a place to grow a vegetable, it is best to prefer an area completely open to sunlight.

Disease and pest resistance

The hybrid in question shows excellent resistance to fusarium wilt and bacteriosis. However, there is always a danger that the plant will be attacked by a cruciferous flea, get sick with keel or black rot.

Cabbage is a very popular horticultural crop. But growing a good, large and tasty cabbage is sometimes very difficult, because it is often affected by a huge number of diseases and pests. The main role in the cultivation of this vegetable is played by regular prevention, which helps to get a rich harvest, and prevent the occurrence of diseases and the invasion of harmful insects. It is very important to start treatment as early as possible, otherwise there is a risk of spreading the infection to still unaffected plants.

Review overview

The overwhelming number of reviews about the Cyclops variety are positive. Gardeners note that cabbage is tasty, easy to ferment, can be stored for a long time and gives a bountiful harvest with basic care.

Observance of simple conditions will help to save cabbage until the new harvest: the choice of a suitable variety, the correct preparation of the vegetable, maintaining the optimum temperature and humidity in the room.
