Cabbage is considered a versatile crop that is used to prepare a number of dishes. The Snow White variety has a late ripening period and is suitable for growing in certain regions.

Breeding history

Snow White cabbage was bred in Ukraine at the Research Institute of Vegetable and Melon Growing. The hybrid was obtained by mass cross-pollination of several varieties.

Since the culture is late ripening, geographically it was spread only in places with a mild and warm climate (in Ukraine and Kazakhstan). But after the passed tests and experiments, they began to grow cabbage in the central and southern regions of Russia.

Description of the variety

Cabbage is intended for outdoor cultivation.

The culture can tolerate well not only light frosts, but also a temperature drop down to –10 ° С. Lower temperatures can negatively affect the heads of cabbage.

Excellent seed germination is noted - about 85%. Heads of cabbage do not crack either in the garden or in storage areas. Cabbage has excellent taste, as well as increased keeping quality up to 8 months, which allows transporting the crop over long distances.

Of the minuses, the fact is that with improper agrotechnical care, the variety can be attacked by insect pests or fungal diseases. And also for someone a disadvantage may be too late ripening.

Characteristics of the appearance of the plant and heads of cabbage

Semi-spreading rosette. Leaves are large, rounded, 12 to 15 cm in diameter. Pale green in color, slightly wavy edge. The surface of the leaf is slightly wrinkled, the veins are small, barely noticeable, there is also a slight coating.

A head of cabbage of a round or flat-round shape, weighing from 2.5 to 3.9 kg. Cabbage is of medium density. The texture is juicy. Internal color is white.

Purpose and taste

The Snow White variety has a universal purpose. But some gardeners do not recommend eating it fresh, as the vegetable has tough leaves. Cabbage leaves lend themselves well to heat treatment, do not fall apart and do not lose their taste. And also the vegetable is suitable for freezing, cooking cabbage rolls and as a side dish.

The dry matter in the head of cabbage contains about 12%. The amount of sugar varies from 4.1 to 6%. The leaves also contain ascorbic acid - about 30-40 mg per 100 g.

Ripening terms

The variety is late ripening, the growing season takes 145-160 days. Harvested in late September - early October.

Yield

The crop has good yields: from 4.7 to 7.5 kg can be removed from 1 m2. Sometimes indicators exceed 10 kg. But this happens in regions with a very warm and temperate climate.

Growing and care

Seeds are sown for seedlings at the end of April. In the middle lane and in areas with a more severe climate, it is necessary to plant seeds for seedlings in late February or early March. Otherwise, the cabbage will not be able to ripen until the beginning of winter.

To do this, take small containers and fill them with soil. The land can be purchased at the store or prepared by yourself. When self-harvesting, it is necessary to add a small percentage of sand and peat to the soil. After the mixture is well mixed, it, like the containers, must be processed.

Seeds, if they are not covered with a special disinfecting glaze, must be soaked in a weak solution of potassium permanganate, and only then planted.

In containers, you can make small trenches, no more than 2 cm deep. The distance between the seeds is 3-4 cm.

After sowing, the soil is well spilled with water, and the containers are covered with foil until the first shoots appear. After that, the boxes should be placed on a small table next to the windowsill. The temperature should be maintained at 7-9 ° C.

In June, cabbage is transplanted to a permanent place. The site should be well lit by the sun, and also protected from strong gusts of wind. In the fall, it is best to dig up the garden bed, while you can add humus and a small amount of wood ash.

The planting pattern is chosen 60x45 cm, and the seedlings go deeper into the ground by 8-10 cm.

Agrotechnical points should include the following points.

  • Regular watering. Before the start of the vegetative period, the procedure can be carried out 1-2 times a week. At the time of the formation of ovaries and ripening, the cabbage is irrigated every other day. Closer to August, they again return to the irrigation regime 1-2 times a week. If the season is rainy, then watering is regulated depending on the condition of the soil. It is necessary that it dries out by about 10-15 cm.

  • Loosening. After each watering, it is advisable to loosen the ground around the cabbage. At this point, the weeds are removed. It must be remembered that only the upper layers of the soil should be loosened at a depth of no more than 10 cm, otherwise the root system can be hurt.

  • The culture is fed with organic fertilizers: chicken droppings, manure and ammonium nitrate. Of the minerals, nitroammophoska or wood ash is chosen. Over-feeding with nitrogen can cause the head of cabbage to become loose.

To grow a rich cabbage crop, you need to know when and how to plant this crop outdoors. Planting dates are determined depending on the variety. It is also necessary to properly prepare the soil and follow the rules of crop rotation.

Proper watering is a prerequisite for agricultural technology when growing cabbage. This vegetable crop prefers regular watering, the frequency of which depends on weather conditions, soil composition, cabbage variety and other characteristics.
Cabbage, like many other vegetables, needs regular hilling. This procedure performs several functions at once: it makes the plants stronger, protects the crop from diseases and pests, retains moisture in the soil, and increases the yield of the crop.

Cabbage requires particularly careful care when growing. The plant quickly absorbs nutrients, so the soil needs to be enriched regularly. Adequate amounts of minerals, organics and nitrogen must be provided. Some products can be purchased at the store, while others are easy to make at home.

Cabbage is a very popular horticultural crop. But growing a good, large and tasty cabbage is sometimes very difficult, because it is often affected by a huge number of diseases and pests. The main role in the cultivation of this vegetable is played by regular prevention, which helps to get a rich harvest, and prevent the occurrence of diseases and the invasion of harmful insects. It is very important to start treatment as early as possible, otherwise there is a risk of spreading the infection to unaffected plants.

Observance of simple conditions will help to save cabbage until the new harvest: the choice of a suitable variety, the correct preparation of the vegetable, maintenance of the optimum temperature and humidity in the room.
