The Blizzard cucumber was bred in St. Petersburg. This is a hardy, compact, ultra-early cucumber that saves the gardener from the need to thin out too lush plants.

Description of the variety

Blizzard is a parthenocarpic hybrid bred by the Biotechnics Association. Cucumbers are small, not prone to overgrowth, grow in clusters, therefore they belong to the class of gherkins. The variety was included in the State Register of Approved Varieties in 2006.

Characteristics of the appearance of plants and zelents

Plant with unlimited growth potential, indeterminate. The bush does not branch much. Leaves are medium in size, green. The flowers are predominantly female, at least 3 pcs. in 1 node.

Zelentsy are medium-sized, up to 8 cm long, often up to 6-7 cm, reaching this length, they tend to grow in breadth, become thick, barrel-shaped. The mass of 1 cucumber is 72-76 g, or smaller - 60-69 g. The shape of the zelents is neat, cylindrical, without a waist or bulges at the ends. The color is green, with small thin stripes at the bottom. The tuberosity is medium, sparse, white thorns.

Purpose and taste of fruits

The taste is excellent, without bitterness, moderately sweet. The pulp is juicy, the cucumbers are crispy. Minus - voids can form in fruits. The appointment is universal. Cucumbers are good fresh, in salads, in any kind of preservation.

Maturation

Early variety. After germination, it bears fruit in 40-42 days, or after 6 weeks. According to some reports, the fruits can be removed as early as 37-38 days.

Yield

The yield is very good. The output of marketable fruits suitable for sale is on average 15.2 kg per 1 sq. m. To maximize the yield, greens are harvested at least 2-3 times a week.

Growing regions

The variety is recommended to grow in the European part of Russia: Central Black Earth, Central, Volgo-Vyatka, Middle Volga regions. The originator is located in St. Petersburg, therefore, the Blizzard cucumber is very good for the North-West region. It can also be grown in the northern region and the North Caucasus.

Growing and care

Cucumbers love light, warmth, lack of wind, and an even temperature without fluctuations.

For seedlings, the seeds of the Blizzard cucumber are sown in April. Already in May, it will be possible to transplant young plants into a greenhouse or under film shelters, and in mid-June to remove the first harvests.

Since cucumbers are very sensitive to transplants, it is better to sow them immediately in individual containers or in peat-humus tablets, which are then placed in seedling cassettes.

In open ground or under film shelters, seeds are sown in May - early June, depending on the region. The soil should warm up to 12 ° C and above.

The Blizzard variety has a weak ability to shoot shoots, which saves the gardener from the need to remove stepchildren and extra shoots. It is enough to tie the whips to the trellis.

Like all cucumbers, the cultivar loves regular and abundant watering. Watered with warm, settled water in the evening. During dry periods - daily. If the weather is very hot, cucumbers are also watered in the morning.

Fertilization with proper soil preparation is optional, but cucumbers are very fond of feeding. They feed from 1 to 4 times per season.A solution of mullein, bird droppings, crushed eggshells, infusion of banana peels, a solution of yeast in milk, and an ash solution are used. The last two fertilization options are best used for spraying on the leaf, but you can also shed soil.

If the plants are planted in warm beds, feeding is no longer necessary. It will be enough to water such plants once a season with a solution of trace elements with an emphasis on potassium, magnesium and calcium.

Soil requirements

The variety has standard wishes for the soil. The cucumber loves loose, capacious, nutritious soil. The best option: sandy loam or loam with a lot of humus. In cold regions, a warm ridge is the best solution. Its total height is 1.2-1.3 meters. The pit goes 50-60 cm deep.

Consists of several layers.

  1. At the bottom there are large and long-decaying plant remains: thick branches, remnants of uprooted stumps. You can put paper, old cotton or wool.

  2. Lay out a layer of cut paper, cardboard, shavings on top.

  3. Kitchen waste: peel, tops, eggshells.

  4. Small vegetable waste from the garden: dead leaves, tops of plants or weeds.

  5. Compost layer.

  6. Garden land.

Too acidic soils deacidify, digging them up with chalk, dolomite flour, slaked lime. Potash fertilizer - wood ash - slightly deoxidizes the soil.

In order to collect strong, tasty and beautiful cucumbers on your site, you need to make top dressing. Lack of nutrients can negatively affect the appearance of the plant and significantly reduce the yield. Fertilize cucumbers with organic fertilizers in combination with mineral fertilizers. With the right balance of these components and adherence to the fertilizing schedule, the cucumber yield will be maximum.

Disease and pest resistance

The variety is resistant to true and downy mildew, cladosporium disease. When spots appear, the plants are sprayed with a solution of whey, Fitosporin, and an ash solution. They also spray a mullein solution: 1 kg of mullein is poured into 3 liters of water, infused for several days, filtered, diluted with clean water 3 times, the leaves are treated. You can also use a solution of soap (2 tablespoons), baking soda (2 tablespoons), warm water (10 liters) - spray once a week.

When taking preventive measures, the variety does not get sick.

  1. Sufficient sun and even heat. If it is a cloudy summer, spraying on the leaf with solutions of mineral fertilizers will be useful.

  2. Regular and timely watering.

  3. Compliance with crop rotation. Cucumbers are planted in the same place no earlier than 4 years later.

  4. After harvesting and harvesting plants, disinfection of greenhouses and structures with formalin solution.

The Blizzard cucumber will be of interest to anyone looking for a very early parthenocarpic cucumber with excellent taste and yield.

Despite their popularity, cucumbers are often attacked by diseases and pests. From them, cucumber plantings often die before the start of fruiting. In order to prevent this from happening, it is necessary to try to prevent ailments or get rid of them at the very beginning, having studied in detail their causes of occurrence, signs and methods of treatment.
