A slug is a terrestrial mollusk that has no shell.... It is not for nothing that these creatures received such an original name. The whole reason is that during movement they leave behind a trail of mucus, which can cause certain diseases.

Signs of pests

Slugs can be found in the cellar, greenhouse and on open land. These pests prefer to be found where there is shade and moisture. These creatures eat foliage and young succulent parts of plants. For this reason, they can be seen on the leaves and stems of cucumbers.

The following signs may indicate that slugs appeared on cucumbers:

  • damaged soft, tender parts of the culture;

  • eaten holes and spots on the leaves;

  • the appearance of traces of mucus along the entire path of movement of the gastropod.

The period from early spring to late autumn is considered to be the time of active activity of slugs. Cucumber plantations are considered a favorite habitat and feeding place for this pest.

This vegetable is to their taste more than others. As practice shows, this type of gastropod does not bring any benefit, the only exception is the fact that with their help it is possible to determine an ecologically clean territory. After identifying the presence of slugs in the territory of the cucumber planting, do not hesitate to eliminate them.

How to deal with traps?

For many centuries, it has been believed that the best way to eliminate slugs on the site is to collect them manually. Finding a gastropod and putting it in a container is not difficult, since they are always clearly visible. With this procedure, the gardener does not need to make any effort, since these small creatures do not fly and move slowly.

A fairly effective method of eliminating slugs in a cucumber garden is to set traps.

  1. To economically and safely remove slugs from cucumber beds, you can decompose between plantings plant debris in the form of cabbage leaves, tomato tops, lettuce leaves, cucumber fruits... It is better to collect gastropods early in the morning, before the sun begins to warm.

  2. Another old way to eliminate a slug is use of boards. In the evening, it is necessary to lubricate one side of the object with any fermented milk product. The board should be placed on two bricks, so that the oiled side is at the bottom. In the morning, you can start collecting pests that have come to an attractive aroma for them.

  3. The slug loves cornmeal despite the fact that it is destructive for him. To organize a trap, the gardener should prepare a jar, pour a few spoons of the product into it and lay it on its side. This location of the trap will allow gastropods to crawl inside with ease. The bank is recommended to be located where traces of the pest were traced.

  4. Cucumber pests love the smell of beer. Therefore, to organize a trap on them, it is worth digging a container with a drink into the soil. After the night has passed, gardeners will be able to find more than one gastropod at the bottom of the glass. In the morning, you can start killing the parasite, and then refill the container with beer.

  5. One of the most unusual ways to deal with slugs is to try strong coffee.... The drink is sprayed with a spray bottle or by irrigating the ground around the cucumbers. The smell of coffee is considered unbearable for these gastropods, so they will run away from the site as far as possible.

How to process?

The fastest and at the same time effective way to get rid of slugs in a greenhouse or outdoors is the use of chemicals.

In order to save the plantings, they can be sprayed with the following drugs to combat the pest:

  • "Thunderstorm";

  • "Slime Eater";

  • Ferramol;

  • "Predator";

  • "Stopulitis";

  • "Metoy".

Before watering the seedlings with the above substances, the gardener should think about some of the negative aspects of their use:

  • kill not only slugs, but also beneficial insects;

  • require a waiting period;

  • can be dangerous to humans;

  • getting into the soil.

A safer option for eliminating slugs that have eaten cucumber seedlings is to use fertilizers. Irrigation of the site can be done with calcined substances.

However, their use is relevant only at a time when the crop needs feeding. An equally effective remedy is sprinkling the path of movement of the pest with iron sulfate. In this case, it is worth taking a small amount of fertilizer, as this can harm the plantings.

Some gardeners use folk remedies to eliminate harmful gastropods:

  • spices in the form of kitchen seasonings;

  • salt;

  • beer;

  • coffee.

Prevention measures

As you know, pest control is always more difficult than prevention, therefore, in order to protect cucumber plantations from slugs, it is recommended to perform certain measures.

Several measures will help protect the area from the gastropod parasite.

  1. The territory should always be well-groomed... Weeds are a great place for slugs to live and breed. It is from such vegetation that pests spread throughout the garden or greenhouse. For this reason, it is recommended to remove weeds from the beds, prevent the accumulation of heaps with collected plants, and also regularly thin out cultivated specimens.

  2. There should be no thickened and solid plantings on the site... Otherwise, slugs will develop comfortably in such an environment. By thinning the plantings, the gardener eliminates unnecessary ones, thereby providing good aeration.

  3. The beds must be mulched with sawdust or ash... And you can also use gravel, sand, crushed shells.

The appearance of slugs on the site is an unpleasant, but fixable situation. In this case, the gardener costs as soon as possible to deal with the elimination of the pest from the greenhouse or garden, so that it does not harm the cucumbers.

Nowadays, as well as many years ago, people collect gastropods by hand. In addition, chemical treatment, as well as the installation of traps, will help to eliminate slugs from the territory.
