It is customary to decorate the summer garden not only with useful plants, but also with beautiful flowers. One of these is the crown mock-orange. It is fragrant, easy to care for, and attractive.

Description

Presently there are more than 70 varieties of chubushnik... Additional breeding varieties have also been developed over the past few years. Crown mock-orange is just such.

It is often confused with the common garden jasmine plant. This is due to a certain external similarity.

The scientific name of the chubushnik in Latin is philadelphus coronarius, and it belongs to the hydrangea family. If we talk about garden jasmine, it belongs to the olive family.

Chubushnik is a deciduous shrub with strong stiff shoots. On the inside, they are, on the contrary, soft. Previously, it was used to make mouthpieces for smoking pipes, as well as shafts. It was this that served as the primary reason for the appearance of such an unusual name. In its natural environment, this plant exists in countries such as Southern Europe, East Asia, as well as the United States.

Chubushnik is considered a perennial that can easily survive even the most severe winters. The average bush grows up to 3 meters, and in some cases, its height reaches 5 meters.

Its unusual openwork leaves are very beautiful, and even when the plant has completely faded, the bush will still remain a real decoration of the garden. The length of the leaves is within 8 centimeters; their shape is ovoid, and the color is either light green or golden.

Flowering most often occurs in mid-summer and lasts 2 to 3 weeks. The flowers are snow-white or cream-colored and have a very rich and sweet aroma. However, there is also a mock orange with lilac or pink flowers. The shape of the flowers can be different. Simple ones have only 4 or 5 petals. Thicker flowers are also double or semi-double. They are distinguished by a large number of petals and their original shape.

The bark of young shoots is very thin and has a brown tint. Over time, she changes her color and turns gray. Almost all shoots grow from a root outlet.

Varieties

To understand how unusual and beautiful the mock-orange plant is, it is worth considering the most popular varieties.

"Virginal"

It is one of the most beautiful and popular varieties. The plant is a tall bush with a lush spreading crown. The height and width of the plant are 3 meters. The leaves of this mock orange are oval and have a bright green tint. Their length is 7 centimeters.

Terry flowers with a snow-white color are collected in large inflorescences. Flowering begins in the first months of summer and lasts approximately 20-25 days. At this time, there is a persistent sweet aroma in the garden.

This variety is unpretentious in care, besides, it will be able to endure even the most severe winters.

Sybille

This particular variety of mock-orange is quite elegant and beautiful. This is a classic bush with a height of up to 1 meter and a dense crown. Shoots are mostly erect, with bright green leaves. Small flowers, 2 centimeters in diameter, usually grow singly. The petals are white with a pink border at the very base. Flowering begins in the first days of summer and lasts almost a month. This variety of chubushnik can withstand frosts down to -25 degrees, even without additional shelter.

"Dwarf"

An unusual and original plant. The shrubs are rather low. Their average height is 35 cm. But in diameter they are much wider. Many gardeners are frustrated by the fact that such plants do not bloom at all. But the bush can be cut, giving it its original shape. Very often they are used as hedges.

Snowbelle

This variety attracts gardeners with its beautiful name and the same appearance. In height, it grows to about 2 meters; the standard crown width is about 1.5 meters. The leaves of the shrub are bright green in color, are distinguished by an oval shape and denticles at the edges.

The bush is decorated with densely double, ball-like, snow-white flowers, the diameter of which is 4 centimeters. All of them are collected in small inflorescences of 6-8 pieces. Flowering begins in July and lasts for almost a whole month.

"Aureus"

Among all varieties of chubushnik, this one has a spherical crown shape and a height of up to 3.5 meters. Besides, the plant has unusual beautiful golden leaves, due to which it looks equally attractive even after it fades. But the beauty of its snow-white colors cannot be denied. They appear in late spring and decorate the bush for 2-3 weeks.

Innocence

The main difference between the plant is its oval-shaped green leaves, decorated with randomly arranged pale strokes. The flowering of the bush starts in early June and lasts more than 20 days. The flowers are up to 4 centimeters in diameter. Together they form inflorescences of 6-7 flowers.

Belle etoile

The bush is not too tall and neat. The leaves are pale green, oval in shape and up to 4 centimeters long. The flowers are bell-shaped and have an unusually beautiful color. Their petals are pale white, anthers are completely golden, and the middle is purple. You can see this beauty from the end of May to the end of June.

Manteau d »Hermine

This variety differs from its "counterparts" in that it blooms longer than others - up to two months. In height, the bush can grow up to 0.7 meters. The branches have a drooping shape and small pale green foliage. However, during the flowering period, everything is compensated by the large number of snow-white single flowers.

During flowering, the bush exudes a delicious strawberry aroma.

How to choose?

In order to determine which kind of mock-orange is best for your garden, several questions must be answered.

  • Are you allergic and, in general, do you like the scent of flowers: if yes, choose odorous varieties, if not, those that do not have a pronounced odor.
  • How do you want to use the mock-orange: as a hedge, a curb along a path, a single planting? The answer to this question will help you determine the height of the plant.
  • When do you want to enjoy the bloom of the mock-orange? With the right selection of different varieties, you can extend the pleasure of contemplating its beautiful flowers from the beginning of May to the end of July.

Landing

You can plant the crown mock-orange at different times. This can be done in early spring, even before the buds bloom, and in early autumn. The place should be sunny, because in the shade the shoots become thin and stretch upward, and the flowers become much smaller.

This plant is not too demanding, so it can be planted on any soil.

However, if possible, it is best to choose fertile and well-drained land.

The planting hole must be at least 50 centimeters wide and deep. It needs to be prepared in advance, 2 weeks before planting. At the very bottom it is necessary to lay out a drainage layer. It can be fine gravel or expanded clay.

The subsequent layer should consist of a substrate: sand, deciduous humus, and turf. The ratios should be as follows: 2: 1: 3. When the ground settles well, the seedling must be deepened by 3-4 centimeters. Then you need to sprinkle everything with earth and water it abundantly. To prevent moisture from evaporating so quickly, you can mulch the earth around the bush.

If the chubushnik is planted next to its "brothers", then the distance between the bushes should be at least 1 meter.

In the event that the plant is used to create a hedge, the distance between the seedlings should be no more than 0.5 meters.

Follow-up care

Chubushnik is a rather unpretentious and hardy plant. It is not afraid of frost or heat. However, in order for it to delight gardeners even after flowering ends, you should still follow certain rules and take care of your garden.

Watering

It is very important to water the chubushnik in a timely manner. This will ensure abundant flowering. Particular attention is paid to watering in early spring. At this time, the bush is growing very actively. Watering is necessary every 10-11 days. In this case, two or three buckets of water per bush will be enough. It is better to use slightly warmed water.

During flowering, it is best not to water the bush, but lightly spray it. If it grows too slowly, growth stimulants can be added to the water. And so that moisture does not evaporate too quickly, it is advisable to mulch the soil around the bush after the first watering. You can use peat or hay for this.

Top dressing

In order for the chubushnik to always please with its appearance and a large number of flowers, it must be fertilized regularly. So, in the spring, under each bush, you need to pour a mullein solution. It is enough to dilute 1 kilogram of such fertilizer in 1 bucket of water. Such a top dressing can be replaced with a commercially available nitrogen preparation.

Fertilizers should be applied a second time immediately after flowering. You can use a solution consisting of 1 tablespoon of potassium sulfate, 2 tablespoons of superphosphate and 1 bucket of water. You can replace this top dressing with simple wood ash.

The third top dressing is applied in the fall. At this time, you can spread out either compost or deciduous humus under each bush.

Pruning

Such a process allows even a very old or just a neglected bush to be brought back to life.

There are several cropping options.

  • Sanitary. It can be carried out at any time of the year. In the process of pruning, all weak and dead shoots are removed. In addition, you need to cut off all branches that grow inside the crown.
  • Anti-aging. This pruning can be done once every 3 years. The first step to such pruning is to remove all shoots that are more than 10 years old in early March. You need to cut them off at the very ground. This will make the bush look younger, and it will bloom much more profusely after pruning.
  • Pruning in the fall. During this period, it is best to carry out sanitary pruning or regular thinning of the bush. You should not cut off young shoots at this time, as this will lead to a decrease in the number of flowers for the next year.

Disease and pest control

This flower does not undergo almost any disease. The main enemy of the chubushnik is gray rot. If she struck a plant, it must be treated with special preparations, which can be easily found in a specialized store.

As for pests, it can also settle on a bush aphids, and spider mites, and even a weevil... To avoid their appearance, it is necessary during the swelling of the buds, as well as before and after flowering, to process the chubushnik with a tank mixture. For these purposes, such drugs as "Fufanon" and "HOM" are suitable.

Reproduction

You can propagate the bush in the following ways.

Using seeds

This method is suitable only for those who want to grow natural chubushniki. To begin with, the seeds must be stratified within 60 days. In this case, the temperature should be within 2 degrees above zero. They are placed in a container with slightly moistened peat and coarse sand, and then transferred to a refrigerator for storage.

In early March, the seeds are sown in a substrate, sprinkled with a very thin layer of sand, and then covered with glass or a thick film. The container must be opened daily for ventilation and watering. After 1 week, the first shoots should appear, respectively, the glass can be removed. With the appearance of two leaves, seedlings can be planted in open ground.

At first, it must be shaded to protect it from direct sunlight.

By dividing the bush

This method can be used both in autumn and spring. In the first case, division is possible only when all the leaves have completely fallen off. After digging, it is necessary to select the daughter bushes, separate them, and then plant in the usual way. In the spring, you need to divide the bush before the start of sap flow. It also needs to be dug out, divided into several parts, and then planted in pre-prepared holes.

Layers

Using this option, you can achieve good rooting of the plant. First of all, you need to prune, and then apply fertilizer under the bush. After that, the ground must be carefully leveled and a groove must be formed near it. A young shoot must be carefully placed in it, moving it away from the base of the bush, but not cutting it off. Further, it must be fixed and sprinkled with earth. When the formed seedlings take root well, they can be separated from the mother bush with a sharp shovel and planted in a permanent place.

Cuttings

This method is considered to be the simplest. Only well-developed shoots should be used. All cuts must be treated with a product that will accelerate the appearance of roots.

After that, they need to be placed in well-fed soil and create a greenhouse effect for them, using either glass or film for this. When the roots appear, the cuttings can be planted in open ground.

Beautiful examples in landscape design

A blooming chubushnik will be able to attract the attention of others, regardless of whether only one bush is planted on the site or several at once.

In the second case, a beautiful array of green plants is obtained. Other flowers look great against its background, especially if they are bright or stand out in a rich dark shade.

Chubushnik is often used as a hedge in personal plots. Dwarf varieties of chubushnik are usually planted as a border for flower beds.
