The view of a blooming garden and a fruitful vegetable garden pacifies and inspires owners to create various devices that simplify the maintenance of the site. One of the tools created by the efforts of folk craftsmen is the "Mole" super-shovel.

The simplest device helps to reduce the stress on the back by transferring it to the muscles of the arms. By pressing on the handle of an unusual shovel from top to bottom, less tiring loosening of the soil is carried out.

Design

The ripper shovel, also known as the "Crotchel", resembles wide forks, bolted to the bed, where there is always one pin less than on the forks. As a standard, there are 5 pins on it, and one more on the working part, although this does not apply to all models. The arrangement of the teeth opposite each other prevents them from meeting when lifting the working element.

On the back of the bed there is an arched leg rest, which resembles the letter "P" upside down. At the front, part of the fixed frame is slightly raised. It also serves as a ripper support. The minimum tine length on the working forks is 25 cm.

They are made of hardened steel. In general, the number of teeth depends on the size of the tool. On sale there are miracle tools 35-50 cm wide.

The weight of the Mole ripper is about 4.5 kg. It is enough for a working person to spend less effort to sink the forks into the ground. Even with such a mass, working with a miracle shovel is not too tedious. After all, it does not need to be carried around the garden, but simply dragged to the next site, where it is planned to carry out further loosening.

Advantages and disadvantages

Operation of the tool in practice allowed us to identify many positive aspects, but there are also disadvantages. Information based on feedback from practical users.

First, let's list the obvious advantages of digging with a shovel-ripper.

  • Accelerated plowing of the garden. In just 60 minutes of work, without a large loss of energy and effort, it is possible to process a plot of up to 2 acres.
  • The device does not need consumables. He does not need refueling, as, for example, a walk-behind tractor.
  • For storing "Mole" there is enough free corner in a small shed.
  • A shovel of this type is less harmful to the health of a person working with it due to the minimal load on the musculoskeletal system.
  • When loosening, it is possible to preserve the top fertile layer of the soil, while simultaneously getting rid of the roots of the weeds.

Of the minuses, the impossibility can be noted:

  • working with tools in low greenhouse conditions;
  • processing of narrow beds in the event that the width of the working element of the ripper exceeds the size of the plowed strip.

How to do it yourself?

Many craftsmen prefer to make tools with their own hands. This is convenient, since a homemade tool is made as suitable as possible for the user. It is made of the right size for certain parameters.

It is not difficult for a home craftsman to cook a miracle tool... Elementary skills and materials are required. It is not necessary to have drawing skills and understand complex circuits. You will need a square tube for the frame and some steel rods to make the teeth. The handle will fit from any other shovel. But you can buy it separately at any specialty store.

There are advantages to making a super-shovel yourself. They are not only about saving the budget. As already mentioned, the tool turns out to be ideally suited for the growth and physical strength of the employee.

The design is brewed by an illustrative example, without relying on any drawings. The sizes are selected according to your own preferences.

A square metal tube is needed to make the frame and stops, and the teeth on the movable forks are made of high quality hardened steel. One of the edges is sharpened with a grinder, observing an angle of 15-30 degrees. A jumper from the pipe is welded to the frame, and the teeth of the oncoming forks are attached to it. Such pins can be made from reinforcement without sharpening the edges. Both parts of the forks are fixed to each other by a steel pivot mechanism. For this purpose, two arcs are bent, holes are drilled, and the parts are bolted together.

A section of a round pipe is welded onto the bar of the movable forks. The wooden handle is inserted into the socket. In height, it should reach up to the chin of the person who will operate the instrument. For more convenient use, a T-shaped crossbar is often attached to the handle from above.

The finished structure must be tested in practice. The convenience of working with a homemade ripper indicates that the sizes were chosen correctly.

How to use?

The "Mole" tool has analogues with a similar design and principle of operation - "Plowman" and "Tornado". The miracle device itself works as a lever. First, the shovel is installed on the area to be plowed. The lever is the handle, which is erected vertically. The pitchfork tines are positioned perpendicular to the ground and immersed in it under the weight of the frame. The depth of immersion depends on the density of the earth..

When the teeth are partially immersed in the soil, pressure is exerted by the foot on the backgauge or on the metal bar on the working forks, on which the pins are fixed. Next, you need to press the handle with your hands first on yourself, and then down. The frame does not load due to the stops. With a pitchfork, the Mole lifts a layer of earth, passing it under pressure through the opposing teeth of a metal ripper. Then the tool is pulled back along the bed, and then identical actions are continued.

The great advantage of the "Mole" device is that the fertile soil only looses up on the surface, and does not go into the depths, as when working with a bayonet shovel.

Reviews

About the super-shovel "Mole", designed for loosening the earth, they say differently. Someone likes to work with the instrument, while others scold him for imperfections. It is worthwhile to figure out how such an invention is superior to a bayonet shovel, and in what it loses to it.

Some users report fatigue while working. First of all, to stick a shovel bayonet into the ground, it takes a lot of effort when exposed to the foot. A person has to bend over, lift the tool along with the layer of earth and turn it over. Such actions strain the back, arms and legs, but at the same time the abdominal muscles and pelvic joint are not strained.

After working manipulations with a bayonet shovel, severe pain is felt in the back and muscles. Sometimes a person leaves the garden, literally bending over in half.

When working with the Mole ripper, the load is given only to the hands. In this case, the layer of earth does not have to be raised. You just need to push the handle down. There is practically no load on the legs. Steel forks sink more easily into the ground than a simple shovel.

Even retirees speak of the miracle shovel as a wonderful invention that makes it easier to work on the site.

Another positive point concerns the number of actions performed during the processing of the beds. With a bayonet shovel, you first have to dig up the entire area. If the soil is clayey and moist, large, unbroken lumps remain on it. They have to be broken separately with a bayonet. Then the soil is leveled with a rake to loosen the remaining small clods.

With the "Mole", the entire cycle of these works is performed at one time. When an earthen ball passes between the ripper teeth, a bed is left behind the miracle shovel, absolutely ready for planting work. The teeth do not damage the earthworms and remove the entire weed roots from the ground.

However, in some areas, the use of such a shovel is not possible. This applies to virgin lands, abundantly overgrown with wheatgrass. There, you cannot do without the help of a bayonet shovel or a walk-behind tractor. Only then can the Mole be launched. In case of rocky soil and clay soil, the miracle device "Mole" will not come in handy at all.

In all other cases, such a tool will certainly help to dig up the area faster and easier.
