We may not see what is hidden behind the fence, but the fence itself is always in sight. And the way it is painted gives the impression of the owner of the site. Not everyone will be able to accurately work with a brush and produce perfect staining, and the final work of the spray gun always looks flawless. The article describes how to paint wooden and metal fences, what paints are suitable for them, and what equipment should be chosen.

Choice of paint

Fences are located on the street, in the access zone of destructive atmospheric precipitation. Sooner or later, they affect the paint layer of the barriers, making them vulnerable and unsightly. If you pick up a good paint, you will not have to update the appearance of the fence often. The requirements for painting products are as follows:

  • moisture resistance;
  • resistance to temperature fluctuations;
  • ease of application to the treated surface;
  • economical consumption;
  • UV resistance;
  • security;
  • pleasant appearance of the painted object.

Today the construction market offers a large selection of paints and varnishes, and many of them are suitable for refueling spray guns. When buying paint, you need to pay attention not only to its compliance with the type of painting equipment, but also to consider what surfaces it is intended for.

Acrylic and oil compounds are suitable for wooden fences. It is better to cover metal surfaces with water-based, acrylic, alkyd paints. So that the spray gun does not fail during operation, the thick composition should be brought with solvents to the required consistency.

The easiest and safest way is to use the solvents recommended in the instructions accompanying the specific coloring product.

How to paint a wooden fence?

Spray guns should be chosen taking into account the material of the working surface, the composition of the paints, the scale of painting. For working with wooden fences on an industrial scale, professional pneumatic versions of well-known brands with the HVLP or LVLP spray system are preferred. If you need equipment just below the professional level, you can consider the HVLP system with more affordable prices. For domestic conditions, models are chosen cheaper and easier, they will still spray paint uniformly at an acceptable speed, but their cost is much lower than luxury ones.

To paint a home fence, you can use an electric spray gun with a reinforced compressor. But he does not always cope with thick paint, it has to be diluted. A hand-held paint sprayer is also suitable for household painting. This type of spray is cheaper than any other option. Having a spray gun, you can paint the fence evenly and quickly, it will take longer to prepare it for painting. To tidy up a wooden fence, you need to do the work in a specific sequence.

First, remove the layer of old paint, removing it in different ways.

  • Mechanical. If the paint is cracked, you can try to remove it by hand with a spatula, but it is easier to use a grinder or drill, using metal brushes and flap wheels as attachments.
  • Chemical. A special liquid is applied to the surface and left for an hour, then the paint, which has become pliable, is removed with an ordinary spatula.

With the help of industrial alcohol or solvent, degrease the surface for better adhesion. Further, other preparatory actions are performed.

  • Before painting, the fence must be primed. It will help extend the life of the paint layer.
  • Irregularities and crevices are treated with putty.
  • When the fence is dry, you should wipe the putty with sandpaper, leveling the surface.
  • Then it is necessary to re-prime the fence.

When the preparatory work is over, paint is applied to the dry fence with a spray gun in one or more layers, depending on the density of the composition.

Metal fence painting technology

As in the case of a wooden surface, a metal fence should be pre-prepared and only then painted. To do this, perform a number of actions.

  • First, the metal is removed from the manifestation of corrosion, problem areas are well rubbed with an iron brush and sandpaper.
  • Stubborn rust stains can be tried with a solvent or coated with hot linseed oil. Surfaces with special problems are coated with a corrosion converter.
  • The dried fence is treated with a deep penetration primer.
  • After drying, a layer of paint is applied to the surface using a spray gun. Repeat the staining if necessary.

When painting a metal or wooden surface, you need to be able to work with a spray gun. It is not difficult if you follow some rules.

  • Before you start painting, you should make sure that there are no lint, dust and other contaminants on the surface of the fence.
  • Paint should be passed evenly, without lingering in one place. Otherwise, you will get smudges or drops that worsen the appearance.
  • In order to avoid waste of material, the spray jet is applied perpendicular to the object being processed.
  • The movement of the sprayer is made across the fence. Go to the next section without changing the direction of staining.
  • The distance between the fence and the spray gun should be 15-25 cm.
  • If re-staining is required, it is carried out after the first layer has completely dried.
