To maintain cleanliness in the garden area, it is necessary to periodically remove the resulting organic debris somewhere, from branches to cones. And if soft waste of a small size is allowed to be collected in a compost heap, then with large and hard waste you have to look for another option. The best solution would be to buy a garden shredder.

Description

The garden shredder for grass and branches allows you not only to destroy waste, but also to transform it into fertilizer - a substance that quickly decays or is used for mulching. It also destroys leaves, cones, roots, bark and other gardening by-products. The shredder can be powered both by electricity and by the supply of gasoline. Modern devices have two types of knife systems: milling or disc. The disc is a combination of several knives made of steel. It is used for non-solid waste, that is, grass, leaves, thin twigs and more. Such a shredder will not cope with branches, perhaps with very thin and feeding little by little.

The milling system looks like a gear made from a monolith. With its help, the garden is freed from everything hard and rough, that is, cones, branches, roots. Some models are even able to cut through the trunk, the diameter of which reaches 7 centimeters. However, the grass often gets stuck in the milling mechanism, so it is not used to clear soft debris. In addition, there are also universal shredders. They are equipped with a large number of horizontal and vertical knives, so they can handle all materials.

Principle of operation

The principle of the shredder can be correlated with the operation of a giant meat grinder. A variety of wastes are laid inside, which are then grinded with a grinder. The condition of the final product can vary from full-fledged sawdust to small pieces. The chopper is a housing containing a motor inside, which is responsible for the operation itself, and a chopping system. A funnel is placed at the top, into which garbage is placed. Usually, its diameter is directly related to the purpose of the device: wider for grass, and narrower for branches.

Recycled material exits through a hole at the bottom of the shredder from a separate hole. It can end up in either a plastic container or soft cloth chalk. There is also an option when the garbage simply spills out, and the owner himself must decide the issue of loading it. It is worth noting that the plastic container is much more convenient to use, but it takes up enough storage space, and it adds to the weight of the shredder itself. As for the bag, it is quite compact, but not so easy to use.

Varieties

Depending on the engine used, choose an electric and gasoline shredder. The electric engine guarantees less weight of the unit, no exhaust and relatively quiet operation. Unfortunately, the use of such a shredder can become difficult due to the presence of a short cord or the absence of its connection points in nearby access. Of course, the issue is solved by the purchase of an extension cord and a carrier, but this is an extra waste and only a satisfactory comfort from use.The power of electrical units, as a rule, ranges from 2 to 5 kilowatts, and their cost fluctuates within the boundaries of the middle segment.

The gasoline engine allows the shredder to be transported anywhere without any problems. However, the design itself is very massive, since the engine is also impressive in size. The additional weight is added by the fuel used. Such designs are quite powerful and costly. Thus, an electric motor is more suitable for a small area, and a gasoline one for large areas with a large amount of organic waste. By the way, there is also the possibility of connecting the shredder to a garden walk-behind tractor or other equipment for performing agricultural work. Such a system is convenient for use in horticultural farms.

Garden shredders are also subdivided depending on the cutting units. They can be equipped with knives, two or more. Two cutting points speak of the simplest model, capable of handling grass and branches, the diameter of which does not exceed 2.5 cm. Such knives are located in a horizontal plane. There are also models with 4 or 6 knives, which are located both vertically and horizontally.

The next type of crusher is equipped with a worm-type crusher. In this case, the cutting blade is a kind of screw with a small number of turns, placed vertically. Such a device handles branches with a diameter of approximately 4 centimeters. In the case of grass, the situation is not so straightforward: the unit processes it, but often the blades of grass stick or wrap around the screw, and therefore it has to be cleaned. Crushers with a worm crusher are considered universal.

There are also devices equipped with a cutting unit in the form of a cylinder with a large number of knives. They are mainly produced by Bosch. The cutting part can be disassembled with both vegetation and branches. Winding grass on a screw is extremely rare or if the knives are dull. This type of shredder is versatile. Finally, some devices have a cutting shaft - the most powerful crusher. The unit copes even with thick branches, but only if their length ranges from 5 to 8 centimeters. This device is not recommended for work with grass.

Rating of the best models

Many well-known manufacturers have in their assortment a variety of garden shredders, however, small companies sometimes surprise with the release of high-quality products. AL-KO EASY CRUSH MH 2800 is a reliable grinder made in Germany. Although its body is made of plastic, all "internals" are aluminum and steel. The device is equipped with a container for collecting the processed material, retraction rollers, as well as protection against motor overloads.

WOLF-GARTEN SDL 2500 Handles both wood and corn, allowing large quantities of difficult waste to be shredded. The unit is equipped with a special device that is activated when the knives are jammed.

IKRA MOGATEC EGN 2500 is considered one of the most successful shredders at an affordable cost. The device works with branches, the diameter of which does not exceed 4 centimeters. The processed items are placed in a 50 liter container made of plastic.

PATRIOT PT SB 100E copes with bitches whose diameter reaches 10 centimeters. This extremely powerful device is equipped with 16 knives and is mainly used for professional work.

WORX WG430E works with a line and easily handles a variety of grassy debris. In an hour, it can be used to process up to 12 cubic meters of grass.

Selection recommendations

When choosing a garden shredder model, it is important to understand which product will undergo more frequent processing - soft or hard.If the prevailing part of the site is a composition of beds and shrubs, then it is necessary to take a grass chopper, which is also suitable for processing dry materials. If the area is a garden with an abundance of trees of different sizes, then it is better to take a branch shredder. At the same time, it is important to study with what maximum diameter of pieces the device can handle. Finally, in the case of a combination of garden and vegetable garden, it is worth taking a universal shredder.

It is recommended to evaluate the technical parameters of the shredder, as well as how convenient it will be to transport it around the site. Since the device will not only be taken out of the place of permanent storage, but also move throughout the territory during processing, it is reasonable to make this process as comfortable as possible. The degree of comfort can be determined by examining the location of the unit handles and the size of its wheels. The wider the latter, the easier it is to transport the unit. The presence of a reverse stroke is considered useful. Thanks to this feature, it will be possible to fix the problem with the unsuccessfully inserted branch.

The decisive factor is the assembled height of the chopper. If this indicator turns out to be too large, then the bell will be located at a height unattainable for a person of small stature. The same can be said about weight - a device that is too heavy will be beyond the control of a fragile woman. A significant advantage will be the presence of a protection visor, which will allow you not to worry about flying out chips, pieces and other waste. It is also worth finding out in advance the strength of the resulting noise effect.

The optimal power for a medium-sized plot ranges from 2.5 to 3 kilowatts, and for horticultural land - from 4.5 to 6 kilowatts. In the second case, the device will be enough to chop branches, the thickness of which does not exceed 50 millimeters. Larger waste is better burned or used as fuel. The higher the power of the shredder, the larger the size of the branches it will be possible to process, but the cost of the unit will be higher.

Reviews

Review of reviews allows you to identify the most successful models from different price segments. For example, it turns out that the VIKING GE 250 is capable of handling any kind of debris, but at the same time it works almost silently. Its advantage is the wide funnel that can suck in waste. Einhel GH-KS copes well with the task, but has a rather narrow funnel. This suggests that most often the materials have to be pushed inside on their own. The compact WORX WG430E handles both leaves and grass at a very satisfying speed. However, in the case of large debris, such a unit will not help much.
