Poetry is a cherry variety bred by specialists from the All-Russian Research Institute for Breeding Fruit Crops. The variety has been approved for use since 2001. Currently, the characteristics of the plant are well studied.

Description of the variety

Poetry cherries are characterized by the following external features:

  • the tree is medium-sized, reaches a height of 3.5 m, is durable, has a raised crown of medium density in the form of a pyramid;

  • branches are smooth to the touch, gray in color, shoots are brown, straight;

  • leaves are dark green, oval, serrated at the edges, pointed at the top, glossy on the outside;

  • the flowers are narrow-calcinated, white, 2.5 cm in diameter, the petals are located separately from each other, three flowers are formed in one inflorescence, they are formed on bouquet branches and growths of the last year.

Fruit characteristics

The berries are considered large in size, their weight is 5.5 g. They develop in the shape of a heart, covered with a yellow skin with an integumentary dark red color. The fruits have a beautiful presentation.

Taste qualities

The pulp is creamy, dense, cartilaginous, separates well from the stone, contains large amounts of dry soluble substances. The taste is pleasant, not sugary, sweet and sour, estimated at 4.8 points. There is a lot of colorless saturated juice inside. Berries can be eaten fresh or used for blanks, especially since they are characterized by resistance to cracking.

Ripening and fruiting

The first berries can be observed 4 years after planting. The tree begins to bloom around May 10-15, and fruiting starts in the second decade of July, which is typical for varieties with an average ripening period. In this case, the berries ripen at the same time.

After planting the seedlings, it will take a long time before you can see the first berries on the tree. The first flowering occurs only in the fourth year of the tree's life. At this time, the tree produces only a small number of flowers. In the fifth year, you can already expect more active flowering and the first, albeit small, harvest. A decent harvest can be harvested for 6-7 years.

Yield

This is a high-yielding variety that can please an average of 68.6 c / ha of berries, and the maximum productivity index is 111.2 c / ha.

Self-fertility and the need for pollinators

This is a self-infertile variety that needs the proximity of pollinating varieties, that is, trees with the same flowering period. The greatest efficiency was shown by such pollinators as Raditsy, Iput, Tyutchevka.

Growing and care

Sweet cherry Poetry has average indicators of winter hardiness and drought resistance, therefore it is recommended for cultivation in the Central Black Earth region. The tree will feel comfortable in light to medium loamy soil with neutral acidity. This is a moisture-loving variety, but it does not tolerate moisture stagnation, which means that groundwater should be located quite deep from the surface of the earth. Gardeners provide some tips for plant care.

  • A seedling planted in spring needs formative pruning. It is important to do this before the start of sap flow.The same applies to sanitary pruning, during which all dry and frozen branches must be removed.

  • Top dressing containing phosphorus and potassium can only be started from the fourth year, but this is provided that a soil mixture rich in these substances was added during planting. Nitrogen compounds should be used as early as the next year after planting; it is important to apply them in the spring after the frost is complete.

  • Watering is carried out in June during the growth of the tree and fruits, in drought and in the fall before cold weather - a maximum of once a week. To prevent cracking of the fruit during the ripening period, the tree is not watered.

Sweet cherries are planted in a sunny and well-protected place from the wind. The soil should be fertile, loose and moisture-permeable. There are two options for planting cherries - spring and autumn. The first option is the most preferred and is suitable for all growing regions. In the southern regions, planting can be carried out in the fall.
One of the benefits of grafting a tree is to restore overgrown plants, improve the taste of the fruit, and adapt southern varieties to cool climates. If you follow all the recommendations of experts, you can strengthen the immune system of cherries, and it will be more resistant to pests and diseases.
In order to harvest a rich and tasty cherry crop every year, you need to properly care for it. Timely watering is one of the essential steps in care. The rate of watering a cherry tree directly depends on how dry and hot the weather is, and on the amount of precipitation. Basically, cherries need to be watered about 3-5 times per season, depending on the weather conditions in your area.
One of the most important agrotechnical measures in the cultivation of sweet cherry is correct and timely pruning. Correct pruning eliminates the consumption of nutrients for infertile shoots, so more trace elements are sent to the fruiting branches. This process increases the quality and quantity of the harvest.

Disease and pest resistance

Cherry Poetry has a relative resistance to such ailments as coccomycosis, moniliosis, fungal diseases. To prevent the occurrence of infections and to protect the tree from insects, one should not forget about preventive measures.

  • Treat the plant with special agents in the spring before the sap flow begins and in the fall during the fall. A urea solution is suitable for processing. "Akarin" and "Fitoverm" help from pests. These drugs prevent the invasion of aphids, flies, weevils, which can affect this crop variety.

  • Avoid overflow, and initially place the seedling in an area with deep groundwater.

  • When pruning, process all cuts with garden pitch.

  • Remove fallen fruits and foliage in time.

When caring for cherries, you need to carry out timely protection against various pests and pathogens. Depending on the cause and nature of the course, all cherry diseases can be conditionally divided into several categories - infectious and non-infectious. Each category of diseases provides for its own plan and method of treatment, the use of certain drugs and folk remedies.
Self-cultivation of sweet cherries is a complicated process. It is important to follow all the necessary subtleties and techniques for the fruit tree to take root. There are several ways to propagate cherries: grafting on another tree, cuttings, growing from a stone, propagation by root shoots or layering.
