It is not difficult to provide quality care for a cherry tree. This requires knowledge of the little subtleties that will allow you to grow a tree healthy and harvest a rich and tasty harvest from it every year. Particular attention should be paid to the timely watering of the tree. How to properly water the plant, and when to do it, will be discussed in the article.

How often and at what time?

Sweet cherry is a tree that loves moisture, although it is drought tolerant. In order for the plant to produce good and high-quality fruits, it must be supplied with the necessary amount of moisture in a timely manner. In general, during the warm season, the cherry tree needs to be watered about 3-5 times, depending on the weather conditions in your area.

It is especially important to pay attention to watering the plant during spring, when flowering and active fruit formation begins. This happens most often in May.

Active ripening of berries begins in June. During this period, you need to slightly reduce the amount of water for the plant, since the skin of the fruit may begin to crack, which will lead to their early deterioration. A it is also not recommended to water the cherry tree too abundantly in the second half of summer, namely in August. This will provoke active growth of shoots, which significantly reduces the winter hardiness of the tree and can lead to its death during severe frosts.

We must not forget about watering in hot weather, in order to prevent the branches and root system of the plant from drying out. The heat is especially intense in the middle of summer, and therefore at this time it is necessary to monitor the condition of the tree and the moisture of its soil as best as possible. Please note that watering should be abundant, since the roots of the tree go into the deep layers of the earth - 40 centimeters or more. About 2-3 buckets for each tree will be enough, provided that there is no strong and prolonged heat, otherwise the amount of water should be slightly increased.

Another abundant watering of trees occurs in the autumn. This is a sub-winter watering, and it is carried out along with the process of feeding the plant.

Try not to allow either water deficit or excess. And cracks in the soil, indicating its drying out, and its swampiness lead to diseases of the tree and weakening of its immunity. Please note that improper watering can also cause the appearance and spread of pests, which is unlikely to benefit the cherry tree and its fruits.

As for young seedlings, high-quality care is required for them so that the plant takes root well in the soil and gains strength for its further development. After planting in spring, he needs to provide regular watering so that the roots receive the required amount of moisture. They need to be watered every day, using 2-3 liters of water for each planting.

Irrigation rates

The rate of watering a cherry tree directly depends on how arid and hot the weather is in your area, and how much rain falls there.

So, if there is abundant rainfall, then less water should be used. Otherwise, waterloggedness of the soil may occur, and as a result of this - rotting and fungus, which is very difficult to combat.

If there is prolonged dryness and heat, then in this case the tree must be given a little more moisture than at normal times. In especially hot periods, it is recommended to regularly moisten the trunk circle so that the cherry tree receives the right amount of water.

The ways

Cherry trees must be watered in an annular groove, which should be located along the edges of its crown.

Before watering, the soil in the area of the trunk circle must be thoroughly loosened. After adding water and, if necessary, fertilizing, the earth must be mulched. If you carry out subwinter watering, which occurs in the fall, then you need to carefully ensure that the soil where the tree grows can be thoroughly saturated by about 700-800 centimeters. This will help the tree to endure the winter and not die, since the freezing of its soil will proceed somewhat slower, and the tree itself will receive greater frost resistance.

Separately, it is worth mentioning the watering of cherries with the introduction of the necessary fertilizers, and specifically, about root feeding.

Before carrying out this procedure, it is necessary to water the cherry tree well. So, for an adult planting, about 60 liters of liquid will be required, and for a young one, about 2-5 years old, 2 times less. After that, it is necessary to distribute the dressing in the annular groove.
