Sweet cherry is a favorite delicacy of most Russians. The sweet and juicy berries are often eaten fresh to maximize their flavor and health benefits. Also, the fruits are great for making aromatic jam, juice or compote. Berries are often added to sweet baked goods. Many varieties of fruit trees are grown on the territory of the country and abroad, and one of them is the Adelina cherry.

Description of the variety

Medium-sized trees reach a height of 3.5 m. The color of the bark is gray. The texture is smooth, even. Due to the spreading crown, the tree takes up a lot of space on the site, which must be taken into account when laying a garden. The crown of medium density is similar in shape to a pyramid. The branches are slightly raised and straight. Brown shoots of medium thickness without descent.

The leaves are deep green in color, their shape is standard, resembling an egg. The sheet plates are curved and smooth, with a matte surface. Veins are clearly visible on the leaves. Fruiting occurs on bouquet branches or growths of the last year.

Fruit characteristics

The berries are heart-shaped. This type is considered standard for different varieties of sweet cherries. Average weight - from 5.5 to 6 g. Dimensions (in mm) - 23x23x24. The stem grows to a length of 4.6 cm. Gardeners note a good separation of the berries.

The color of the peel and pulp is the same: burgundy, dark red. By consistency, the pulp is cartilaginous, has an average density. Due to the rich color of the pulp, juice and fruit compotes have the same bright color. The bone is easily separated from the pulp. Its weight is 0.2 g, its shape is round.

Taste qualities

The Adeline variety became popular due to its pronounced sweet taste, thanks to which it received a tasting rating of 4.7 points out of 5. The percentage of acids - 0.6, sugars - 11.9, dry components - 16.2. The purpose of the berries is universal. They are harvested for the winter, eaten fresh and used as an ingredient in baked goods or other desserts.

Ripening and fruiting

The first crop will be harvested only 4 years after planting the trees. Flowering occurs in the last spring month, from the 10th to the 15th. Adeline is considered a medium-ripening variety. Ripe berries are harvested in mid-July.

After planting the seedlings, it will take a long time before you can see the first berries on the tree. The first flowering occurs only in the fourth year of the tree's life. At this time, the tree produces only a small number of flowers. In the fifth year, you can already expect more active flowering and the first, albeit small, harvest. A decent harvest can be harvested for 6-7 years.

Yield

The yield of this variety is high. The average indicator is 79.1 c / ha, the maximum is 142 c / ha. Achieve excellent yields only when growing cherries in comfortable conditions and with proper care.

In the first years of fruiting, up to 10 kg of fruit can be harvested from one tree. Every year this figure will increase and will gradually reach the 15-25 kg mark. Even fully ripe berries can tolerate long haulage, which is why this variety is often grown for sale.

Self-fertility and the need for pollinators

Adeline is not able to pollinate on its own, since it belongs to the self-infertile species. Plant pollinators near the trees. Rechitsa and Poetzia varieties are considered suitable neighbors.

Growing and care

The fruit tree needs a sufficient amount of moisture, which is needed for normal growth and the formation of juicy berries. In spring, during flowering and pruning, cherries are watered more often. It is advisable to combine irrigation with fertilization, as the nutrients are better absorbed into the soil. Drying out of the soil indicates that it is necessary to perform mandatory watering.

Young seedlings are fed with fertilizers with a high nitrogen content. This component contributes to the formation of shoots and the growth of healthy green mass. 100 g of urea is consumed per square meter of the garden. They switch to complex mineral compositions when caring for mature trees. Humus and compost are also used. To saturate the soil with potassium and reduce its acidity, ash is added.

Crown molding is a prerequisite for a rich harvest. In the process of work, only one main escape is left. With the arrival of spring, they get rid of frozen and deformed branches that thicken the crown. Sanitary pruning can also be carried out as needed when it is necessary to thin out the plant mass. Garden pitch or copper sulphate is used to treat all cut sites to avoid contamination of the tree.

Autumn preparatory work will help the fruit trees survive the winter, especially for seedlings that have not yet matured. Before the arrival of winter, the land around the trunk circle is watered abundantly. Moisture prevents the soil from freezing quickly. Then the area is covered with a layer of humus mulch.

To protect young trees, it is recommended to assemble a special frame to which a dense burlap is attached. Spruce branches are laid on top of it, and in winter a large amount of snow is poured.

Note: Mature trees do not need to be covered for the winter, especially if they grow in regions with a warm climate. Experienced gardeners note the high resistance of trees to frost, but in flower buds it is average.

Sweet cherries are planted in a sunny and well-protected place from the wind. The soil should be fertile, loose and moisture-permeable. There are two options for planting cherries - spring and autumn. The first option is the most preferred and is suitable for all growing regions. In the southern regions, planting can be carried out in the fall.
One of the benefits of grafting a tree is to restore overgrown plants, improve the taste of the fruit, and adapt southern varieties to cool climates. If you follow all the recommendations of experts, you can strengthen the immune system of cherries, and it will be more resistant to pests and diseases.
In order to harvest a rich and tasty cherry crop every year, you need to properly care for it. Timely watering is one of the necessary stages of care. The rate of watering a cherry tree directly depends on how dry and hot the weather is, and on the amount of precipitation. Basically, cherries need to be watered about 3-5 times per season, depending on the weather conditions in your area.
One of the most important agrotechnical measures in the cultivation of sweet cherry is correct and timely pruning. Correct pruning eliminates the consumption of nutrients for infertile shoots, so more trace elements are sent to the fruiting branches. This process increases the quality and quantity of the harvest.

Disease and pest resistance

This variety has an average resistance to moniliosis and coccomycosis. These are common fungal infections. Low temperature and high humidity contribute to their development, therefore it is important to prevent stagnation of water in the garden area.

Red spots on the leaves are one of the symptoms of coccomycosis. Scarlet footprints gradually increase in size, affecting the foliage. Under the influence of the fungus, the yield and the rate of development of the tree are noticeably reduced. Flowers, berries and shoots suffer from moniliosis. The fruits are covered with brown spots.

A solution of copper sulfate or Bordeaux liquid will help to cope with the problem. From ready-made means "Horus" will do. You should also get rid of infected branches and berries.

It is much easier to protect trees from infections in advance than to treat them later. Prophylactic treatment should be performed before bud break. When using chemical compounds, they must be discontinued up to 3 weeks before harvesting.

Some gardeners consider adherence to agricultural practices to be the best prevention of disease. To do this, you need to regularly water the trees, prune and clean the garden area of fallen leaves.

When caring for cherries, you need to carry out timely protection against various pests and pathogens. Depending on the cause and nature of the course, all cherry diseases can be conditionally divided into several categories - infectious and non-infectious. Each category of diseases provides for its own plan and method of treatment, the use of certain drugs and folk remedies.
Self-cultivation of sweet cherries is a complicated process. It is important to follow all the necessary subtleties and techniques for the fruit tree to take root. There are several ways to propagate cherries: grafting on another tree, cuttings, growing from a stone, propagation by root shoots or layering.
