The use of polyurethane skirting boards allows you to beautifully decorate the appearance of the ceiling for any type of room and purpose. Products made of polyurethane, which replaced gypsum and foam curtain rods, make it possible to bring to life any design ideas at a very reasonable price and with a high level of quality. Thanks to the ceiling decoration, you can hide small irregularities in the walls and the ceiling itself, as well as complement the interior of the room with individual and interesting style solutions.

What it is?

The term "polyurethane molding" denotes interior decoration elements such as polyurethane skirting boards, cornices, fillets and moldings. This decor detail is used at the final stage of the renovation work.

Polyurethane molding is traditionally anchored in the area between the wall and ceiling. He not only hides small errors in the decoration of the walls and ceiling, but also decorates the room.

Before the advent of polyurethane, gypsum stucco was used as a ceiling decoration, which was not only heavy in weight, but also did not always have a high aesthetic quality. The drawing on the plaster cornices was not very clear and visually did not create the impression of the required volume. Modern polyurethane has a clear pattern structure that looks relief. Even in the case when a smooth fillet version is used for decorating the ceiling, the polyurethane material looks more advantageous compared to other material options.

In the field of design, polyurethane moldings are used quite often, they are indispensable for decorating loft, avant-garde, minimalism, baroque, and so on. If you choose the right molding width and pattern, such an interior detail will harmoniously fit into almost any design style, creating modern and fashionable looks.

Advantages and disadvantages

Professionals believe that a skirting board made of polyurethane material is the most durable and wear-resistant finishing material. This decor item has a lot of advantages for which it is so highly valued by craftsmen and designers.

  • Strength - polyurethane retains this property throughout the entire cycle of its use. The material is durable, it does not prick and can withstand certain loads without breaking. Polyurethane is able to withstand temperature fluctuations from -60 to + 80 ° C.
  • Wear resistance - polyurethane products have a shelf life declared by the manufacturer, which is at least 30 years. In the process of application, this material does not lose its original properties and does not lose its presentable appearance over time.
  • Plastic - materials made of polyurethane have a certain degree of flexibility, which makes it possible to fix them not only on an uneven surface, but also to form various bends with their help. During operation, the skirting board, fixed in a curved state, will retain its predetermined shape.
  • Convenience - polyurethane molding is quite easy to use. It can be easily cut using even a simple stationery knife. The skirting board lends itself to processing, putty, painting. Even a person without special skills can fix such a product to the wall and ceiling.
  • Environmental friendliness - polyurethane does not emit components harmful to human health into the environment. For this reason, this decor can be safely applied to both the kitchen and the children's room.
  • Moisture resistance - polyurethane is absolutely resistant to water. It does not absorb moisture, so it can be used to decorate a bathroom.
  • Price - polyurethane skirting boards will cost you less than gypsum stucco molding, but they will be more expensive than plastic or foam products.

Despite the large list of advantages, polyurethane moldings still have disadvantages. When purchasing this decor element, you should know the following.

  1. Polyurethane has a high density, so its weight is significantly higher than that of plastic or foam products. To securely fix such a molding, you will need a special adhesive.
  2. A significant disadvantage of polyurethane decor is its high cost. It is several times larger than, for example, a foam analogue.

Too obvious defects in the wall or ceiling in the form of irregularities with the help of the plinth alone will not work, this type of finish will cope only with minor roughness. It is obvious that the advantages of polyurethane products are much greater than the disadvantages. The high level of quality and good performance are due to the fact that the material contains rubber. In addition, the production technology also includes the use of a foamed plastic component.

Thanks to the special formulations, polyurethane moldings are able to withstand the effects of certain acids, gasoline and other chemical components.

    Species overview

Finishing materials are produced today in various assortment, as well as the ceiling plinth can be straight or flexible, used for complex design ideas. For decoration, manufacturers produce moldings both smooth and embossed, with a certain rhythmically repeating pattern applied to them. The types of polyurethane skirting boards are classified as follows.

    By the corner

If you cut a piece of plinth vertically and pay attention to the resulting cut, then you will notice that the angle of inclination of the product is different for different models. There are varieties with an angle of inclination of 30 °, 45 ° and 60 °. This diversity is necessary to create embossed decor, which can be located on the ceiling in several tiers.

    By width and appearance

The width and volume of the molding are also important when implementing a design idea for decorating premises. There are the following types of skirting boards.

    • Wide option - it is used for those rooms with a ceiling height of 3 meters or more. Most often, a plinth is used, the width of which is 7 cm. You should know that the wider the plinth, the more it visually reduces the height of the ceiling.
    • Narrow option - This type of molding is suitable for rooms where the ceiling height is 2.5 meters. The width of such a product most often does not exceed 4 cm.
    • Medium variant - used in rooms where the ceiling height is in the range from 2.5 m to 3 m. The width of the plinth in this case can be 5-6 cm.

In appearance, a baguette is flat or volume and raised, which is achieved due to the presence of convex pattern elements. In addition, the skirting board can be direct or flexible.

    By constructive and design features

Room decoration can be done in various ways. According to the design features of polyurethane skirting boards, there are the following modifications.

    • LED backlit - this molding is initially equipped with a small recess, where a special LED strip is mounted to provide illumination. An alternative to such a tape are moldings with spot lighting.
    • Curvilinear models - these products are used for finishing multi-level ceilings. To protect yourself from breakage of the skirting board, when installing complex bends, it is recommended to purchase ready-made skirting boards in a ready-made, bent configuration.
    • Ornament - from what patterns the skirting board is decorated with, its application depends on the creation of various design styles. There are ornaments that fit the baroque style, there are options for classicism or gothic style directions.

Smooth moldings - these are the simplest and most popular options for the execution of polyurethane skirting boards. Their versatility lies in the fact that such models can be used in any style solution. Therefore, if you have any doubts about whether the skirting board pattern will fit the overall style of the interior, you can choose the usual smooth option without risking a mistake.

Polyurethane skirting board installed with stretch ceilings, ceramic tiles or plastic panels.

To make the interior design look harmonious, it is important to choose the right decor details for it, including the ceiling plinth.

    How to choose?

When choosing a ceiling plinth, you must take into account the premises for which purpose it is needed. The best options with which a polyurethane fillet looks beautiful are its combinations for a stretch ceiling, in an attic space, for large rooms, as well as for rooms with high ceilings. Some design projects include plinth finishing of wood-like wall materials, and also use moldings for indirect lighting small spaces.

Designers recommend using polyurethane materials with high moisture resistance for the bathroom, bathroom, kitchen and children's bedroom.

The seller can confirm such properties of materials using certificate compliance of the product with the required criteria. When choosing moldings, pay attention to their width, shape, relief and pattern. There are options on sale that processed and painted in the factory, this material is already completely ready for use, without requiring additional forces and funds for preliminary preparation.

Particular attention should be paid to the area of the room and the height of the ceilings. Small rooms with standard ceilings should not be fitted with broad skirting board models, while the correct width will visually increase the volume of the space to be decorated. As for the shape of the molding, it all depends on the design project and the flight of your imagination. Polyurethane skirting boards can very realistically imitate plaster moldings or give a room a clear and laconic shape.

If too many decorative elements are involved in the design project, then it does not make sense to additionally overload it with an elaborate plinth, in this case a simple smooth molding will be appropriate.

Conversely, if the interior design is modest and laconic, then you can decorate it and place accents in the room with the help of richly decorated fillets located under the ceiling.

The choice of color solution for polyurethane skirting boards also depends on the design concept.... Manufacturers produce baguettes that are already painted in a specific color range. If there is no option for the shade you need on sale, you can paint the product yourself. You should know that if the floor and the baseboard match in their color scheme, then such a design technique will allow you to significantly increase the area of space visually. In the case when the plinth matches the color of the walls, this technique allows you to visually raise the ceiling a few centimeters higher than it actually is.

    Installation rules

Ceiling plinth will not be able to correct large curvature of walls or ceilings, therefore, to securely attach the molding, you must carefully level the work surface. If this is not done, then the molding will look sloppy, and over time it may completely peel off from the wall or ceiling.

To securely fasten the polyurethane skirting board, you must provide yourself with glue in advance. The Semin 300 glue has proven itself well for this purpose, but if it is difficult to find it, then adhesives called "Liquid nails" are quite suitable for you.

The next preparatory step is cut skirting boards according to the required dimensions. In this case, the miter box will help you. Having laid the plinth in it, you can cut the material at the desired angle. Before starting installation work wall and ceiling surfaces must be cleaned and prime.

Further, the installation of the plinth is carried out in the following order.

    1. In small dots, glue should be applied to the inner surface of the molding.
    2. Wait a minute for the glue to dry a little, and then bring the skirting board to the wall and firmly press the product against the surface to be decorated. You should have a clean, soft cloth in your hands to remove any excess adhesive immediately.
    3. After all the decor details are securely glued, you need to start sealing the joints with a polyurethane sealant, and treat the corners with putty.

Experienced craftsmen sometimes, instead of glue, use a composition of gypsum putty, which has good adhesion. But this method justifies itself in the case when the weight of the fillet is insignificant, and the surface on which the polyurethane product will be mounted has not been pre-decorated.

The putty adheres well only to the surface previously treated with a primer. The advantages of this method are that during the installation of the skirting board, you can immediately cover up all the cracks and irregularities, as well as the joints of the molding parts.

The process of installing ceiling plinths is clearly demonstrated in the video below.

    Painting

Decoration skirting board made of polyurethane, can be painted with acrylic or latex paint both before and after installation. For staining, use a soft, wide brush... In the case when you decide to paint the skirting board before installation, you can paint it using aerosol can... With its help, you can correct the situation when the molding, already fixed on the wall, was poorly painted. In this case, the wallpaper or other material is covered with masking tape, which is removed after staining.

Experienced finishers first of all glue the plinth, and after that they already glue the wallpaper or paint the walls. This method saves paint and wallpaper.

In addition, this method will allow you to avoid the annoying situation when, under the weight of the molding, the wallpaper peels off the wall along with it. Despite the convenience of the proposed method, it is not suitable for installing moldings if the wall is covered with tiles or decorative plaster. In this case, the moldings are glued last.
