To date, a lot of attention is paid to the decoration of the ceiling. In city apartments, the possibilities are not limited. When it comes to the wooden covering of a private house, you have to treat the issue of cladding more carefully. It is important to take into account a number of features so that the ceiling is a harmonious component of the interior, which sets the desired atmosphere for each room. Consider the nuances of design, study the varieties of facing materials and design techniques.

Peculiarities

The bias towards the design of the ceiling in a wooden house is erroneous. Many techniques are appropriate here that cannot be applied in an apartment due to the limited space and lack of wall height. However, the choice of material depends on a number of factors, starting with the design features of a particular room. This can be a beveled perspective of the walls, the presence of columns, ledges, niches, which changes the usually rectangular shape of the ceiling and forces these flaws to be played up with various decorative techniques.

The height of the walls is a plus for these buildings. Usually, in private or country houses made of solid wood, the ceiling is high, therefore, various methods of decorating the ceiling zone are possible here, including laconic single-level and complex multi-level systems that reduce the height of the walls. The presence of the second floor is also important. This leads to a different thickness of the ceiling, sometimes the height of the walls, implying a different material for decorating the ceiling space.

If the second floor is reserved for the attic (heated attic-type room), you will have to work with the peculiarities of the roof. Typically, such a ceiling has beams that visually make the interior heavy. In addition, the design of the attic ceiling can be complicated by the presence of slopes that are complex in shape and location, which reduce the height of the walls and set rigid frames for arranging furniture. With a skillful approach to design, you can turn these disadvantages into advantages of a stylistic solution.

In the conditions of technological progress, it is necessary that the facing material for the ceiling is not only aesthetically pleasing - the functional component is important. Therefore, for facing the ceiling area, they try to select materials that differ in the proportion of sound and heat insulation, which will reduce heat loss and save the house from various extraneous sounds coming from the street. The device of structures is subject to a number of rules, among which the mandatory criteria are the characteristics of the wood used for the floor. It is important that the finishing material is light, makes the ceiling warm, allows air to pass through, has antiseptic properties, and excludes the appearance of an environment for the reproduction of harmful microorganisms, including fungus and mold.

Other requirements include fire resistance and environmental friendliness. The use of natural materials in the decoration will exclude harm to health and allergic reactions. Durability also matters: the material must be durable, not changing its qualities for many years, since ceiling repairs are not often done. The last factor of the material is ease of maintenance. In this case, when buying finishing raw materials, they try to make a choice between raw materials with antistatic properties (repelling dust and dirt) and a material that can be wiped with a damp cloth or semi-dry sponge.

Materials and their characteristics

In the modern market of finishing materials, brands offer a rich list of various products that can be used to decorate the ceiling in a wooden house correctly and harmoniously, taking into account different styles. There are several types of ceiling design: it can be tension, suspended, hemmed and combined. Materials are chosen taking into account the features of a particular design. Consider the main types of raw materials used in the decoration of a wooden house.

Wood

This material meets all the stated requirements. It is environmentally friendly, durable, looks beautiful, provides a favorable microclimate and almost always fits well into different design styles. Often, such decor is performed with the addition of beams. Various types of solid wood are used as lumber. The most popular varieties are oak, beech, maple, ash, alder, cherry. Sometimes conifers are used in decoration: spruce, cedar, fir, larch.

An important nuance is the moisture content of the lumber, which should not be more than 16%.

Lining

This lumber is a board made using a special technology, which has a groove and tongue for ease of installation. Depending on the type, it may differ in the design of the lock. Sheathing the ceiling with such material is within the power of everyone. The lining is durable, is distinguished by noise insulation, allows the surface to breathe, is an environmentally friendly raw material that is in an affordable price segment. Convenience of design is the possibility of combining this finish with other materials (for example, beams), as well as its decoration with carving, painting, aging effect.

Plywood

This material is a budget way to decorate the ceiling in a wooden house. He needs to design the lathing from an aluminum profile or wooden beams. Plywood is moisture resistant. Often, its front side is laminated to simulate different materials in a particular shade. It is made from wood of 5 different species, alder, birch and maple are used for the top layer, the middle consists of solid coniferous varieties. To increase its attractiveness, plywood is sanded on one side. Sometimes plastic or asbestos paper is used for decorative coating.

Veneer

Veneered panels are nothing more than cheap planks in the form of planks, glued on top with a thin layer of expensive wood. They can imitate any type of wood, at a price more expensive than lining, they are distinguished by a wide variety of ceiling finishes. Designing with such material can be done by everyone: the installation is extremely simple, which is ensured by the lock fastener that each panel has. At the same time, installation will require a minimum of time and tools. Such panels look stylish, solid and aesthetically pleasing, they are durable, in case of dismantling they allow you to easily change the design. The disadvantage is the high price for a large amount of work.

Plaster

The raw material is a composition for application to a hard surface, which is sold in the form of a dry packaged mixture or a ready-made creamy mass. The material has several varieties, depending on the composition and purpose, it can be starting, finishing and decorative.

The advantage of this raw material is the possibility of leveling ceiling defects, elasticity in polymer-based products, durability, antistatic, as well as environmental friendliness. In addition, the category includes compounds that protect surfaces from radiation, the formation of fungus and mold. The advantage of the material is the mass of possibilities for decoration. With its help, you can give the ceiling the look of plaster stucco molding, Venetian and Versailles plaster, imitate wood with an aging element, embossed surface and applying a textured pattern by means of special stencils.

Drywall

The panels are suitable for finishing the ceiling in a wooden house no worse than other materials: they are versatile, lightweight, and flexible to change in shape. GKL are warm sound-insulating raw materials, through which one-, two- and multi-level structures can be made using straight, curly lines. Sheets are mounted on a frame with a crate. GKL allow painting, wallpapering, fixing false beams, elements of gypsum stucco molding. The material can be decorated with artistic painting. It looks beautiful, stylish, appropriate in the design of any room in a wooden house.

Tension cloth

This material is divided into two types: PVC film and textiles (including satin varieties with a characteristic silk sheen). Film is a budget type of material, it is cheaper, has a smaller width and is divided into two varieties: glossy and matte. Glossy has a mirror effect, so it cannot fully convey the beauty of photo printing, if it is available in the design of the canvas. The matte film looks beautiful, it does not expand the space, but it conveys the clarity of the lines and contours of the picture. The satin canvas looks beautiful, it allows the ceiling to breathe, while it does not retain water if there are communications on the second floor and a leak occurs.

The canvases do not deform, but it is undesirable to decorate the ceiling of a house with them, which has not yet shrunk.

Ceiling tiles

This finish is presented on the market in the widest variety: today, in addition to expanded polystyrene tiles, you can buy varieties of wood and metal. The advantages of this material is the ability to simulate different textures, depending on the type of raw material and the desired effect. The most interesting products are rectangular and curly slabs with a mirror and 3D effect. Color solutions are unique, in the lines there are varieties of white, which provide for multiple painting, varnishing. Ceiling tiles are excellent insulation and sound insulators.

In addition, plastic panels are sometimes used in ceiling decoration. However, such a material is undesirable for use: no matter how advertised by the manufacturers, its characteristics cannot be called suitable for indoor use. It does not allow air to pass through, so mold and mildew may appear under it if this material is used as a cladding of a house from a bar. If the room is well heated, the plastic will release harmful substances into the air that poison the body. OSB are also harmful: their binder is formaldehyde resins with additives, so this material is not suitable for ceiling decoration.

Lighting

The lighting design of the ceiling in a wooden house is of great importance; due to it, even a laconic design can be made special. Today, it is customary to perform compositional lighting of the ceiling, using central lamps and auxiliary lighting for this. If earlier the space was additionally illuminated with wall sconces and floor lamps, today the spotlight and linear lamps of built-in or adjustable type are in the center of attention.

Depending on the design technique and the chosen style, pendant and surface type chandeliers can be used for decoration. In the first case, the models are attached to suspensions in the form of a cord or chain. Models of the second category are built into the ceiling and, in addition to the classic design, can resemble luminous panels of a square or round shape.

Lighting can be linear, spot or flexible.

LEDs are recognized as the best light sources. They are harmless to health, do not flicker or make sounds during operation, consume a minimum of electricity, converting almost all of it into light, so they do not heat up. By using RGB models, you can vary the color of the shade of the luminaire. This allows you to decorate the ceiling in different ways. The convenience of strip lighting is flexibility: it can repeat any figured contour of the ceiling structure, and also provides for a built-in type of use. In addition, fiber optic threads are used in the design of the ceiling area.

How to finish with your own hands?

It is not difficult to make a ceiling in a wooden house with your own hands using these materials and lighting systems. In most cases, this will not take much time, and the result will be no worse than that of professional craftsmen. Conventionally, all types of fasteners are divided into glue and frame. In the first case, before finishing the ceiling with the necessary material, it is necessary to level the base, to rid it of pits, cracks, and potholes. In the second, a frame is made by fixing finishing sheets on it. Consider several ways to decorate the ceiling with different materials.

Tiles

You can sheathe the ceiling with special tiles using special glue. Before using it, the surface is cleaned of dust and greasy stains, then treated with a primer with a high penetrating ability, and the composition is allowed to dry. Due to its low weight, the glue is applied pointwise (from 5 to 9 points). If a high-quality composition is chosen, it is enough to hold the tile for 5 - 7 seconds, and it will be firmly glued to the base. The thermal insulation material is glued end-to-end, excluding gaps.

Plaster

If you need to decorate the ceiling with plastering material, remove the old coating, clean the surface from dirt, greasy stains, level, then primed and leave for a day. If it is necessary to level the layer, they try to apply a finishing coarse-grained white plaster, after it dries, the base is polished and primed again. After that, you can finish with a decorative composition using a textured roller with a specific pattern or a ready-made mixture with the desired effect. After drying, it is trimmed and often painted.

Tension canvas

If the base is flat and the walls are low, the material is glued directly to the ceiling. In the case when the ceiling has a difference in height, it is necessary to make a metal frame on which the panel is pulled and fixed, not forgetting to make holes for the lamps in advance. If, according to the design, a complex illumination based on fiber-optic filaments is conceived, before installation, cuts are made in the intermediate layer, the filaments are brought in. If it is planned to use a hidden tape illumination for lighting, installation is simplified: it is glued after stretching the canvas to the back of the molding glued to the ceiling with a gap of 8-10 cm in order not to block the light of the diodes.

From an array

Carrying out a filing made of wood and its derivatives, a complex of preparatory work is preliminarily carried out, including the insulation of the ceiling and the frame. For filing, you can use ecowool: it will allow you to sew the ceiling tightly and without voids. You can use various ideas, but it should be dosed in order not to overload the interior with the weight of the ceiling.

Using GCR

Plasterboard can be fixed to the base on a pre-assembled wooden or metal frame with lathing. It is necessary to insulate the supporting beams, and then fix the sheets with self-tapping screws. To avoid deformation of the finished structure, it is necessary to leave a gap of about 10 cm between the frame and the wall. If there are defects at the side edges of the sheets, they must be changed or determined for the parts to be trimmed. When performing finishing work, it is important to make holes for spotlights.

The tape can be installed around the perimeter of the box.

Design

The design of the ceiling in a wooden house is subject to a specific stylistic direction. So you can add the necessary mood and convey a certain atmosphere to any interior, which, regardless of the style chosen, should please and correspond to the temperament of the owners of the house, taking into account the opinion of everyone. With a skillful approach to the design of the ceiling, you can visually make any room in the house aesthetically pleasing.

For classics such as classics, neoclassics, classicism, Italian style and English design notes, it is worth picking up drywall structures on the frame. To decorate the ceiling according to all the canons of palace solemnity, it is worth decorating the box with lighting, a chandelier with crystal and decor in the form of plaster moldings, as well as moldings or ceiling plinths. Additionally, you can perform strip lighting around the perimeter of the box, and if space permits, you can mount two central lamps in the ceiling.

If modern trends are chosen as the basis for the style, you can decorate the ceiling with a stretch canvas or its combination with drywall. Options with photo printing on a film or textile basis of a stretch fabric, selected in the same style as the interior design, will look good. If the minimalism or modern style is taken as the basis, you can limit yourself to a plain panel without a pattern with a glossy texture. Such a solution will visually increase the volume of the room.

Wood facing materials look great in ecological style ceiling decoration. In this case, it is possible to combine two different finishes. For example, you can combine false beams with panels, using them around the perimeter, leaving space inside for wooden tiles. There are a lot of design options, but you need to use the cladding carefully: if the floor is laid out in an array in the interior of the room, an imbalance is possible.

Ceiling materials are applicable in the design of vintage directions, which include Provence, Baroque. In this case, it is important to trim with white material, using light-colored lamps to decorate the ceiling.

It should be noted the creative directions of loft and grunge. Even they can be recreated in a wooden house, using beams in the design, imitation of communication systems, as well as ergonomic lamps with the ability to adjust (spots).

Such design options will be especially appropriate on the attic floor, where there are natural beams, and the height of the ceiling allows the use of pendant lamps. In addition to beams, painting and unusual lamps, such a ceiling can be decorated with windows or their imitation, skillfully complemented by LED lighting. False windows look realistic, and at the same time fill the space with light spots, which is especially lacking in the attic space. You can use this technique in the bedroom, as well as in the living room, choosing a good image with photo printing for decoration.

Tips & Tricks

Wood in the design is an excellent material with a fairly beautiful texture, but there should not be a lot of it, otherwise it will lose its expressiveness, and the house itself may turn into a bathhouse or an ordinary wooden box.

Here are some helpful tips to keep in mind: this will avoid common mistakes and make your ceiling look special.

  • Use a different tone in the design of the ceiling, walls and floor: the coincidence of the shade visually reduces the height and width of the walls.
  • Dose a woody shade, do not flood the entire ceiling space with it. Wood needs to stand out from other materials.
  • Having chosen a tension structure, supplement it with a plasterboard box - this will diversify the design.
  • Do not use dark shades of the array - they set a rigid framework for the space, visually diminishing any room. It is better to choose light wood tones for decoration or paint the surface.
  • Create stylish accents: The best way is to combine two different materials (for example, with a transition to the wall), highlighting a certain area of the room.
  • Use original lamps, taking into account the footage: if the space is small, it is better to mount spot and strip lighting. Avoid massive chandeliers - they visually make the design of the ceiling heavier.
  • To raise low walls, use materials with a low thickness: tiles, decorative plaster, paint. If the ceiling is high, experiment with tiered structures on the framing.
  • Wood looks great with plasterboard: the ceiling made of gypsum fiber board will add modernity to the design.
  • If you need to emphasize the accents of a room in the form of brickwork, use a wood-like decor with beams and creative lamps in the form of downpipes.
