Orlovskaya Letnaya is one of the most interesting pear varieties for the southern regions of the Russian Federation.

Breeding history

The parents of the variety are Bergamot Novik and Lyubimitsa Klappa. Pear Bergamot Novik was bred by Michurin, it is a relatively winter-hardy variety with very abundant juicy, but perishable fruits. Clapp's favorite, native to the United States, is a summer variety with delicious, ruddy fruits, but heavily affected by scab. Orlovskaya summer pear was included in the register of approved varieties of the Russian Federation in 2001.

Description of the variety

Orlovskaya summer is a tall massive tree with a wide-pyramidal crown. The crown density is average here. The foliage is round, smooth, dark green, strong petioles, medium length. The flowers are large, white in color.

Fruit characteristics

Orlovskaya summer is a modern triploid variety. Such trees have a triple, not a double set of chromosomes, differ in larger fruits. They are really large - 200 g each, some up to 270 g. This is one of the largest-fruited early pears. The fruits are pear-shaped, symmetrical. The bottom is slightly sloped. The skin is smooth. The color of ripe fruits is usually greenish-yellow, with a slight orange blush on the barrels, the tone is slightly muted. There are few subcutaneous points, the color is even, matte. The skin is medium-dense. Seeds are dark brown in color, large. Keeping quality is 14-18 days.

Taste qualities

Sweet pears, dessert. Tasting score - 4.5 points out of 5. The pulp is firm, fine-grained, white, juicy, semi-oily. The pulp tastes excellent, but the aroma is weak. Apples have a universal purpose. The pear is equally well suited for fresh consumption, for drying, canning, compotes, and jam.

Ripening and fruiting

Summer variety, early-growing, fruits are removed at the end of July. The fruiting period is short. The consumer period is 7-10 days.

Ripening of pears begins in the second half of summer and lasts until mid-autumn. In order to keep the pears fresh and tasty until winter, the characteristics of the variety, the ripening time and the weather conditions in the region are taken into account when harvesting.

Yield

The yield is high - 127 kg / ha. According to some reports, in the Oryol region, young trees give 150 c / ha, mature - 180-200 c / ha.

Growing regions

The variety is recommended for cultivation in the Central Black Earth region of Russia (Tambov, Kursk, Lipetsk, Belgorod and Voronezh regions).

Landing

The variety is undemanding to the quality of the soil. Only saline or clayey soil will require cardinal preparation. The place is chosen warm, sunny, better on a hill. It is good if there are hedges or buildings nearby that protect from the wind. For planting, purchase 2-3-year-old seedlings with a well-developed root system, green buds.

Dig holes with a depth of 70-80 cm, it is better to do this in advance, 2-3 weeks before planting. The pits are 2/3 filled with a nutrient mixture: 3 buckets of humus, 60 g of ammonium nitrate, 900 g of superphosphate, 1 kg of wood ash. Then sprinkle 5 cm of soil and leave without leveling.

A support is hammered into the bottom of the pit, the roots of the tree are straightened, they begin to fall asleep with earth, slightly shaking the seedling to fill all the gaps between the roots. The earth is trampled carefully, but rather well. Form a watering circle. The tree is tied to a support with a garter made of fabric, 2 buckets of water are poured.

In order for the pears to be tasty and of high quality, and the yields to be consistently high, you need to responsibly approach the planting of a fruit tree. When planting a pear, you need to take into account many factors: correctly determine the timing, choose the right place, pay attention to the preparation of the planting pit.
Pear grafting is a simple and exciting procedure, but it requires accuracy and adherence to a number of rules. First of all, you need to take care of the selection and procurement of inoculation material, understand the timing and methods of vaccination. An important point is also the choice of the rootstock, on the quality of which the result of the entire event and future fruiting will directly depend.

Growing and care

The variety grows well in the recommended regions. Not suitable for the Moscow region, since it does not have sufficient winter hardiness. The variety is sensitive to moisture stagnation, does not feel well in too cold rainy summer. Very good drainage must be ensured before planting.

Pear of this variety is highly resistant to scab, but preventive treatments with Bordeaux mixture or Horus preparation will not be superfluous. Orlovskaya Krasavitsa variety can be planted as an additional pollinator.

The rest of the care is classic. Like all pears, this variety loves regular, abundant watering. During the season, 3-5 waterings are needed, depending on the rains. Lack of moisture will affect the fruits that are crushed. In the second half of November, water-charging irrigation is carried out at the rate of 10 buckets of water per 1 sq. m. It is better to water pears by drip method or sprinkling.

Pears love fertile soil. It is best to add compost or rotted manure in the spring as mulch along the trunk circle, leaving space at the trunk itself. In autumn, the soil is dug up, adding more organic matter (5 buckets per 1 sq. M). Superphosphate and potash fertilizers are added at the same time.

The winter hardiness of the Oryol summer, provided that it is planted in the recommended regions, is enough, therefore, only young seedlings are sheltered. And it is enough just to whitewash mature trees with lime from pests and sunburn.

In order for a pear to grow properly and give high yields, its branches must be cut off in time. Pruning can be done in both spring and fall. Depending on the age of the tree and the goals set, pruning can be: sanitary, thinning, shaping, stimulating, rejuvenating.
Feeding pears is a must-have procedure that cannot be ignored. Experienced gardeners recommend applying the first fertilizers two years after planting the tree. The process is divided into 3 main stages, which are determined by the timing of ripening, flowering and fruiting of the pear.
There are two ways to grow a pear seedling - vegetative and by seed. The first method is the most common, including propagation by cuttings, air layers, seedling buds. Seeds are grown less often, since in order to get a bountiful harvest with good taste of the fruit, the seedling will need to be grafted.

Like any other fruit trees, the pear needs protection from various diseases and pests. When planting a pear on your site, you need to know in advance what diseases you should beware of. To successfully carry out the struggle, it is first necessary to correctly identify the cause of the problem. It is important to distinguish signs of disease from manifestations of the presence of insects, ticks, caterpillars and other types of pests.

Review overview

The pear variety Orlovskaya Letnaya has several unique characteristics, therefore it attracts attention. For such an early pear, its fruits are incredibly large and tasty. It is the size leader among the early varieties. The variety has an excellent yield, the trees are strewn with bunches from top to bottom. Pears are generally unpretentious, grow in even in unfavorable environmental conditions. In some reviews, gardeners say that the pear does not taste the best, but this defect is forgiven for the abundance of fruits, their good transportability and general characteristics of the tree.
