Pear is a horticultural crop that is suitable for growing in almost any area. Its juicy fruits are distinguished by excellent taste and rich vitamin composition. To date, dozens of varieties and hybrids of these fruit trees are known. One of them - Hera - appeared relatively recently, but has already attracted the interest of gardeners.

Description of the variety

The Hera pear is a compact tree with a narrow pyramidal shape. The variety is medium-sized, does not occupy large volumes, does not create large shading, which is its undoubted advantage. Perfectly saves space, ideal for small suburban areas.

The crown is formed by straight brown shoots on which wide leaves are located. They have the typical pear shape of an oval with jagged edges, bright green, smooth, shiny, pointed, curved upwards. Both shoots and foliage are medium in size.

Gera belongs to varieties of early winter ripening with a mixed type of fruiting. Has a relatively good early maturity. It is characterized by high productivity.

It perfectly withstands the cold season, is not afraid of frosty winters, firmly tolerates low temperatures down to -38 ° С. Possesses strong, but selective immunity, it is resistant only to some diseases to which the culture is usually susceptible.

Has a high degree of keeping quality, which makes its fruits suitable for long-term storage and transportation. With strict adherence to the storage recommendations, pears can retain their original taste and aroma for six months.

Fruit characteristics

Gera belongs to large-fruited varieties, and this is another obvious plus of this culture. The weight of one fruit can be 160-250 g. They have a medium-sized oblique peduncle, a shallow funnel, and an open calyx.

The fruits are not only large, but also beautiful - by their very appearance they already cause an appetite. They have a regular shape with an even, smooth, shiny surface.

During the harvest season, the fruits are completely green. Only one side of the pear is distinguished by its integumentary color - a thin, delicate bloom of reddish blush.

By the time the pear reaches the state of consumer maturity, its color changes slightly. The rich bright green color of the fruit becomes lighter, yellowish, and the blush from red turns into shades of pink.

A ripe pear is covered with dry, medium-thick skin with a rusty mesh. On the cut, you can see a very juicy creamy pulp. It is characterized by a fine-grained consistency and medium density.

The pulp is semi-oily, there are hard areas - granulations, but there are few of them. In the center is a closed seed chamber. The seeds are medium in size and brown in color.

Taste qualities

The fruits have a pleasant sweet and sour taste and a light unobtrusive aroma - juicy, delicate, refreshing, versatile. Perfect for fresh consumption, as well as for preparing various dishes and preserving.

Ripening and fruiting

For the first time, Hera begins to bear fruit after 4 years from the moment of planting. But it is possible to fully assess its strength only by the 10th year.

Differs in mixed fruiting - fruits grow on both annual and old shoots.

The crop is ready to be harvested in the fall, in mid-September.

Ripening of pears begins in the second half of summer and lasts until mid-autumn. In order to keep the pears fresh and tasty until winter, the characteristics of the variety, the ripening time and the weather conditions in the region are taken into account when harvesting.

Yield

The variety has a regular high yield - with proper care, up to 30-40 kg of fruits can be harvested from one tree.

Landing

Hera loves fertile soil. Gives a good harvest on black soil and loam. If the soil is sandy, then without top dressing it will not be possible to grow a healthy tree.

A sunny, windless area with fertile, non-acidic soil is perfect as a landing site. It is important that there is no close location of subsoil waters on it.

For planting, it is better to purchase healthy annual seedlings - in this case, we can say with confidence that they will take root.

The planting hole should be prepared in advance. To do this, you need to dig a recess 80 cm, 1 m wide. For the successful growth of the seedling, the following fertilizers can be applied to the bottom of the pit, mixed with the soil:

  • a bucket of humus or compost;

  • 50 g superphosphate;

  • 30 g of potassium salt.

A tall peg should be placed near the center of the recess to tie up a young plant.

The seedling must be lowered into the hole, carefully spread the roots without damaging them, and covered with earth so that the root collar remains on the surface. The approximate distance from the root collar to the ground should be 5-10 cm.

The soil on the surface should be well tamped and spilled with water. The planting ends with a garter of the seedling to the peg. You can also mulch the soil around the tree trunk without touching it. Humus is usually used as mulch.

In order for the pears to be tasty and of high quality, and the yields to be consistently high, you need to responsibly approach the planting of a fruit tree. When planting a pear, you need to take into account many factors: correctly determine the timing, choose the right place, pay attention to the preparation of the planting pit.
Pear grafting is a simple and exciting procedure, but it requires accuracy and adherence to a number of rules. First of all, you need to take care of the selection and procurement of inoculation material, understand the timing and methods of vaccination. An important point is also the choice of the rootstock, on the quality of which the result of the entire event and future fruiting will directly depend.

Growing and caring

Pear Hera does not require complex care. Growing it requires simple standard procedures: watering, feeding and pruning. The frost-resistant culture does not require insulation for the winter.

While the young tree is gaining strength, it needs regular weekly watering. The intensity and frequency of watering is regulated depending on the weather conditions.

Fertilize the pear often for the first 4 years. Mineral compositions with nitrogen in the first place are used several times a season. Fertilizer with potassium is applied once a season.

Pruning is necessary to shape the tree and remove non-viable shoots. It is best done in the fall.

In order for a pear to grow correctly and give high yields, its branches must be cut off in time. Pruning can be done in both spring and fall. Depending on the age of the tree and the goals set, pruning can be: sanitary, thinning, shaping, stimulating, rejuvenating.
Feeding pears is a must-have procedure that cannot be ignored. Experienced gardeners recommend applying the first fertilizers two years after planting the tree. The process is divided into 3 main stages, which are determined by the timing of ripening, flowering and fruiting of the pear.
There are two ways to grow a pear seedling - vegetative and by seed. The first method is the most common, including propagation by cuttings, air layers, seedling buds. Seeds are grown less often, since in order to get a bountiful harvest with good taste of the fruit, the seedling will need to be grafted.

Like any other fruit trees, the pear needs protection from various diseases and pests. When planting a pear on your site, you need to know in advance what diseases you should beware of. To successfully carry out the struggle, it is necessary first to correctly identify the cause of the problem. It is important to distinguish signs of disease from manifestations of the presence of insects, mites, caterpillars and other types of pests.

Review overview

Despite the fact that Hera is a relatively young variety, it has already earned the attention of both experienced gardeners and amateurs. Reviews of the variety are promising.

First of all, they note its compactness. Hera is a godsend for summer residents who are limited in free acres of land.

Gardeners from the northern regions of the country are especially pleased with the winter hardiness of the plant. The pear is not afraid of frost and does not require warming for the winter, but in cold regions it is still insulated in order to surely preserve the young tree.

The keeping quality of the variety was especially noted. In fact, when stored properly, crops stay fresh throughout the winter and even longer. This is good news! Many people emphasize that it is very important to follow the storage rules. If this is not done, the fruits begin to become covered with dark spots and soon deteriorate.

And, of course, taste. Juicy, sweet and sour pears are ideal for a light snack. Some note that this variety produces aromatic compotes, delicate puree and a wonderful filling for baking.
