The Julian grape is one of the new varieties of large-fruited hybrid forms of private selection. In addition to excellent taste, it is distinguished by high-quality characteristics. The table variety is considered early and is popular among winegrowers in the first year. The culture is famous for its unpretentiousness and generous yield.

Breeding history

The Julian hybrid is the result of the selection of two varieties Rizamat and Kesha. It was brought out by Vasily Ulyanovich Kapelyushny in a vineyard on his farm located in the Rostov region. The variety has been tested on the territories of commercial and private farms since 2010. Already in 2011, within the framework of the "Golden Bunch" competition, he was noted as the best form of private selection and samples of table grapes. Nevertheless, Julian is not even registered in the State Register of the Russian Federation. There is also no officially confirmed data on the license and certification of the hybrid in any foreign sources.

Geography of distribution

The hybrid variety is grown in central Russia, in the North-West, Central, Volgo-Vyatka and Middle Volga regions, as well as in some regions of Ukraine, in the Republic of Belarus and many post-Soviet countries.

Description

The bushes grow tall, the vine ripens well, growing up to 4 meters in height.

Ripening period

The Julian variety gives the earliest possible harvest in comparison with other early-maturing grape varieties. The flowering of the hybrid begins in mid-May. At the height of August, poured clusters are already showing off on the grape bush. The period from flowering to harvest is 95-105 days.

Bunches

The mass of an individual bunch can reach 2000 g. The density is medium-friable, the shape is often not clearly defined, but is more often defined as cylindrical.

Berries

The shape is elongated, nipple-shaped, pink. Fruit weight is about 20 g. The sugar content is 28%. Translucent berries can give off a slight yellowness. Under a thin but strong skin there are 3 to 5 seeds in dense pulp. The grape shell protects ripe grapes from cracking and wasp attacks. When the vines are overloaded, the ripening period is delayed from 10 to 20 days. The longer the period the bunch is on the bush, the more beneficial it is for the quality of the fruit.

Taste

The berries are tender, sweet, without a hint of bitterness. There is no astringency in the harmonious taste. There are light nutmeg notes and a bright aftertaste with hints of strawberry.

Yield

Due to active pinching, it gives a re-crop by September. The fruits are no less than in the previous one, while the fruits acquire a more intense color.

The choice of planting material
Experienced gardeners recommend that beginners take cuttings and seedlings from those who made them from their vines and are professionally engaged in the production of such material.
You can evaluate the quality by cutting off a small amount of bark. When growing a bush from a cuttings and observing the rules of agricultural technology, survival rate is about 90%, the high quality of the plant is practically guaranteed. It is possible to control the development of grapes at all stages.
Subject to the rules of agricultural technology, survival rate is about 100%. The seedlings must be healthy. Pay attention to the absence of blisters, growths, or other signs of disease.

Growing features

The Julian hybrid does not need special care, but it is necessary to follow certain agrotechnical rules.

Landing

The hybrid form of grapes is bred by seedlings. For this purpose, you need a place with good penetration of sunlight and the elimination of drafts. The variety prefers chernozemic and slightly acidic soils. In regions with mild winters, planting is recommended from October to March. In cold climates, seedlings are planted before budding. If they have already blossomed, cuttings are used instead of seedlings.

Landing features
In order for the vine to give a signal harvest after 3 years, it is necessary to take into account many factors - from the type of soil on the site to the nearby plants.

Pollination

The grape crop has bisexual flowering. This guarantees good pollination, even in the rain-rich summer season and when the number of bees is low.

Pruning

Pruning of vines is carried out for 8-10 eyes. In this case, the total number of eyes should remain within 40-45. After the fall pruning, it is important to remove all fallen leaves and vines. This is necessary to prevent possible contamination of the crop by pests and microbes.

Pruning is one of the main grape care procedures. Depending on the purpose of pruning and the type of plant, the appropriate type of formation is selected.

Watering

An early grape variety needs mandatory irrigation in spring and autumn. In the dry summer period, watering is carried out, focusing on the state of the soil. About 10 days before the appearance of inflorescences on the bush, irrigation is carried out with the addition of wood ash. Watering is suspended during the blooming period. The ripe plant is moistened as needed. During the dry season, it is important to closely monitor soil moisture. In case of prolonged precipitation, a light structure like a canopy is arranged over the landings.

Irrigation schemes
In order for the berries to be large and juicy, it is necessary to organize full watering and feeding. All standards must be adjusted for weather conditions and the rate of evaporation of the liquid.
With a frequent irrigation scheme, it is recommended to moisturize once every two weeks (that is, twice a month during flowering and the appearance of berries) so that the earth is saturated 50 cm deep so that the plant does not switch to superficial (dew) roots. This amount can be reduced by mulching the crop with straw.
With a rare irrigation scheme, having chosen the age and ripening period of the grapes, you can use the standards presented in the table in another article.

Top dressing

The described variety regularly needs top dressing: this is due to the increased productivity of the hybrid form. Every year the vine needs organic fertilizers, which are introduced at the root. Every 14 days, the treatment of the plant with magnesium sulfate in liquid form is shown. The procedure is carried out regularly, before the start of fruit ripening.

Fertilization of an early-ripening hybrid is possible with both natural and chemical fertilizing, strictly following the instructions. One of the best formulations proved to be water-soluble "Plantafol". It is advisable to supply minerals to the soil with water during irrigation, combining irrigation with recharge.

Frost resistance and the need for shelter

The hybrid belongs to the thermophilic varieties, although it exhibits frost resistance. Withstands a drop in air temperature to -24. A shelter will help protect the vine from freezing in winter. In the southern regions, where the temperature does not drop to critical levels, grapes are not harbored. It hibernates fixed on a trellis, not needing shelter. In the first 2 years of its existence, the culture must be covered in winter.

Shelter for the winter is a very important step for the preservation of many grape varieties after wintering.

Diseases and pests

Like most hybrids, the Julian hybrid is not too susceptible to fungal attack. In a favorable summer, the plant can not be treated with chemicals, and a good harvest can be reaped. But in the event of an epidemic and a bad summer, you should not risk it. It is better to take care of prevention by spraying the grapes with preparations to protect the fruits and foliage. Lovers of sweets - wasps can harm them. With a moderate amount of them, the dense skin is able to protect Julian's berries from harmful insects.

Storage

Ripe bunches are stored for a long time without losing their presentation. The bunches tolerate transportation well, which makes it possible to use the variety in commercial directions. During storage, the strong skin does not crack. After picking for 2-3 weeks, the berries are well stored in the refrigerator. To extend the shelf life, it is advisable to collect the bunches with gloves in order to limit contact of the skin of the hands with the berries. This will preserve the wax film. The brushes are cut with scissors, choosing for this a cloudy day in dry weather. In the container where it is supposed to be stored, paper is laid out, the bunches are stacked with the stalks up. The optimum storage temperature for the crop is 2-4 degrees with a humidity of 80%.

Review overview

The reviews received on the cultivation of this hybrid indicate its ability to take root in Siberia, where it can grow and bear fruit in harsh climatic conditions.

The main advantages include generous fruiting and high commercial characteristics of large bunches that attract consumer attention. The advantages of this variety are also called the taste characteristics of the berries, their large size and juicy color, the possibility of obtaining two good harvests per season.

It can be said with certainty that the cultivation of the non-capricious Julian variety will not be difficult even for beginners in viticulture.
