Velor grapes - a promising new hybrid related to table forms, managed to become a real sensation among amateur breeders. Already at the first fruiting, it gives a bountiful harvest, and the size of the berries is impressive even for experienced gardeners.

Breeding history

A new hybrid form in 2017 was presented by a breeder from Lugansk Criulya Sergey Ivanovich. Trials of a subspecies, created on the basis of a pair of varieties Talisman and Cardinal, had been started by him several years before. The main emphasis was placed on getting the harvest at a very early date, as well as on the formation of large fruits with good taste characteristics.

Description

Ripening period

The hybrid form has a very early ripening period of 95-100 days. The recommended sum of atmospheric temperatures for its cultivation should reach 2200 degrees Celsius. Harvesting begins already in the 3rd decade of July.

Bunches

Medium density, weighing 500-1200 g. The shape of the bunch is cylindrical, with a transition to a cone-shaped one.

Berries

Velor grapes are distinguished by their large berry size. They have an elongated shape without a pronounced tendency to an oval, weighing 14-16 g. On the surface, there may be hillocks, humpbacks, and other irregularities. The shade of the berries ranges from deep pink to deep reddish purple upon reaching maximum ripeness. The pulp is dense, fleshy, there are 3-4 bones inside.

Taste

The balanced, harmonious taste of this hybrid acquires noticeable nutmeg notes in some years. Some growers point to the presence of cherry tones. The taste is quite sweet, but not sugary, with a slight sourness. As it matures, it becomes more pronounced.

Yield

According to this indicator, Velor belongs to the forms of grapes with abundant fruiting. The first harvest takes place already 2-3 years after planting.

The choice of planting material
Experienced gardeners recommend that beginners take cuttings and seedlings from those who made them from their vines and are professionally engaged in the production of such material.
You can evaluate the quality by cutting off a small amount of bark. When growing a bush from a cuttings and observing the rules of agricultural technology, survival rate is about 90%, the high quality of the plant is practically guaranteed. It is possible to control the development of grapes at all stages.
Subject to the rules of agricultural technology, survival rate is about 100%. The seedlings must be healthy. Pay attention to the absence of blisters, growths, or other signs of disease.

Growing features

Velor grapes were obtained in a climatic zone characterized by mild winters and warm long summers. For good maturation, it requires an abundance of sun, as well as protection from the wind. The plant tolerates precipitation well. It is recommended to shade it in cases where it is necessary to preserve the spectacular red hue of the berries, to slow down their ripening. When planted in full sun, the skin will quickly take on a darker purple hue.

Landing

The cultivation of this hybrid form can be carried out both on the rootstock and by cuttings. Velor grapes are planted in the ground in the autumn. The depth and diameter of the hole should be about 50 cm.At least 1.5 m is left between the plants in the row.

The pit is prepared in advance, forming a drainage cushion of about 10 cm. Then, a fertile mixture based on peat, compost and complex mineral fertilizers is backfilled. The soil in the hole is moistened so that it settles. At the same time, an underground irrigation system in the form of a tube is being formed. dug in next to. Water is poured into it, fed directly to the roots.

Cuttings also require preliminary preparation. A few hours before transferring to open ground, their root system is placed in a dung-clay mash. This provides a higher survival rate. The seedling is placed on a "stool" - a mound in the center of the hole, the spread roots are lightly sprinkled with soil mixture. After that, you can water the plant with warm water, then mulch.

Landing features
In order for the vine to give a signal harvest after 3 years, it is necessary to take into account many factors - from the type of soil on the site to the nearby plants.

Pollination

The variety is self-pollinated, bisexual flowers appear on the shoots. In favorable growing conditions, it is not necessary to artificially pollinate it.

Pruning

A complex interspecific hybrid needs pruning, rationing of fruiting. Usually fruiting vines are pruned to 6-7 eyes. 2 bunches are left for the shoot, removing excess buds during the flowering period.

Pruning is one of the main grape care procedures. Depending on the purpose of pruning and the type of plant, the appropriate type of formation is selected.
Irrigation schemes
In order for the berries to be large and juicy, it is necessary to organize full watering and feeding. All standards must be adjusted for weather conditions and the rate of evaporation of the liquid.
With a frequent watering scheme, it is recommended to moisturize once every two weeks (that is, twice a month during flowering and the appearance of berries) so that the earth is saturated 50 cm deep so that the plant does not switch to superficial (dew) roots. This amount can be reduced by mulching the crop with straw.
With a rare irrigation scheme, choosing the age and maturation of the grapes, you can use the standards presented in the table in another article.

Frost resistance and the need for shelter

Velor grapes are not distinguished by high rates of frost resistance. Without shelter, it can withstand a drop in atmospheric temperatures down to -23 degrees. In colder climates, the variety needs shelter, the vines are pruned in the fall, then bent to the ground. You can cover it with shields or film, special materials, then cover it with snow.

Shelter for the winter is a very important step for the preservation of many grape varieties after wintering.

Diseases and pests

The resistance of this hybrid form to diseases is at an average level. There are lesions with mildew, oidium, resistance to gray rot is being studied. In any case, preventive treatment with fungicidal preparations in spring will not harm the plant.

Storage

Early grapes are not subject to long-term storage. Under favorable conditions, Velor can be saved for up to 3 months. At the same time, he feels good during transportation, has an excellent presentation.

Review overview

Since this interspecific hybrid belongs to the new, recently bred, opinions about it sound very different. Grape growers, who have already managed to get the harvest, note the excellent ability of Velor to bear fruit. At the same time, the presence of some discrepancies between the declared and real characteristics is noted. For example, the promised pink-red color of the berries is preserved only in the shade or when the bunches are picked early. Staying in the bright sun, they darken, which many growers consider a significant drawback.

The resistance of the new form to disease has not been fully studied either. However, all this does not prevent the Velor hybrid from enjoying success. It is noted as trouble-free in agrotechnical terms. Early fruiting is also confirmed by gardeners, surpassing those of the parent varieties.
