When breeders first bred a cultivated plant from wild grapes, it was decided not to dwell on one variety. New species turned out to be more resistant and larger. The variety of hybrids continues to spread throughout the world, allowing you to purchase or grow your own grapes for every taste.

Breeding history

Using proven grape varieties, breeders have created a new hybrid in Novocherkassk. The parents of Valentine's grapes were the summer Muscat and Demeter crossed among themselves. In the market catalog, the hybrid is called IV-8-7-ppk. The authors of this variety were scientists from VNIIViV them. Ya.I. Potapenko - Krasokhina S.I., Ganich V.A., Maistrenko L.A.

Description

The Valentine variety is considered an unpretentious crop. It takes root in almost any conditions, does not require strong care.

The medium-sized cultivated plant belongs to the semi-covering varieties. Reproduction is carried out by cuttings or their own roots. Bushes and vines are growing strongly. The percentage of fruitful shoots is 65. The fruiting factor is 1.2.

Fruits are not exposed to peas, ripen evenly. They transfer long-term transportation, while maintaining their presentation. The table-type variety pleases with its taste and is excellent for the production of wine products and natural juices.

Ripening period

Valentines grapes are of medium ripening. The berries ripen within 140-145 days from the date of bud formation.

Bunches

The density of the bunches is average, the shape is cylindrical. The brushes of the plant reach up to 40 cm and firmly support the weight of the berries. On average, the weight of a bunch is 900-1100 g, the maximum figures are 2000 g.

Berries

At the stage of ripening, the grapes have an amber hue. The berry, ready for harvest, is elongated-oval in shape, acquires an amber-yellow color with brown blotches.

The berries are large, 27.6 mm long, and 24.1 mm wide. Weight - 9-11 g. Contains 170-190 g / dm3 of sugar and 6-7 g / dm3 of acidity. There are several seeds in the pulp that do not affect the taste.

Taste

The ratio of sugar and acid gives a harmonious taste with a spicy nutmeg aroma. The fleshy-juicy pulp melts in the mouth along with the skin of medium density, which is not felt on the teeth. With the behavior of the sample, the tasting score showed 8.3-8.7 points.

Yield

The yield reaches 136 c / ha, which is 65-70% of the total. The grapes begin to bear fruit early. Juicy berries appear already in the second year after planting. The first harvest is not so rich, but the following seasons are pleasing with fertility.

The choice of planting material
Experienced gardeners recommend that beginners take cuttings and seedlings from those who made them from their vines and are professionally engaged in the production of such material.
You can evaluate the quality by cutting off a small amount of bark. When growing a bush from a cuttings and observing the rules of agricultural technology, survival rate is about 90%, the high quality of the plant is practically guaranteed. It is possible to control the development of grapes at all stages.
Subject to the rules of agricultural technology, survival rate is about 100%. The seedlings must be healthy. Pay attention to the absence of blisters, growths, or other signs of disease.

Growing features

For a bountiful harvest, you need to provide the plant with proper care. Landing involves spring and autumn. But both methods have their own nuances.

In the spring, the sprout has time to get stronger by the cold. But it is necessary to monitor the manifestations of diseases or pests. In the autumn season, moist soil and rapid growth of seedlings are observed. However, an unexpected sharp cold snap will lead to the death of the plant. Growing requires a lot of space.

Landing

For better survival, the roots are treated with special means before planting.

For grapes, a hole 80 cm deep, 40-60 cm in diameter is needed. As drainage, you can lay out a layer of gravel or crushed stone on the bottom. The next layer will be 3 buckets of a fertile mixture of humus with black earth and sand in a ratio of 1: 1: 1. In total, 30 cm of the pit is filled up. The distance between the seedlings is at least 4 m.

A sapling is located in the middle. A sprout less than 20 cm is installed strictly vertically. It is poured with 1.5 buckets of water, covered with earth and tamped.

Landing features
In order for the vine to give a signal harvest after 3 years, it is necessary to take into account many factors - from the type of soil on the site to the nearby plants.

Pollination

The bisexual plant produces self-pollination. It does not need to be located nearby other grape varieties, and also does not depend on pollinating insects.

Pruning

Plant rationing is necessary for uniform ripening of all fruits. For the Valentine variety, two pruning methods are used.

  • Short. No more than 4 eyes are left on the vine. With the inner direction of the first ocellus, 3 buds are preserved. The shoot from the first peephole is removed, the rest will form a bush.
  • Average. Up to 8 eyes are left on each shoot, at least 40 on the arrows. This method helps to withstand the winter.

Plants are processed in the fall, 2 weeks after the leaves fall. Basic recommendations for the Valentine variety:

  • shoots are cut off from the peephole only on one side;
  • pruning is carried out until the kidneys are swollen;
  • sick, deformed branches are removed in the spring.
Pruning is one of the main grape care procedures. Depending on the purpose of pruning and the type of plant, the appropriate type of formation is selected.
Irrigation schemes
In order for the berries to be large and juicy, it is necessary to organize full watering and feeding. All standards must be adjusted for weather conditions and the rate of evaporation of the liquid.
With a frequent watering scheme, it is recommended to moisturize once every two weeks (that is, twice a month during flowering and the appearance of berries) so that the earth is saturated 50 cm deep so that the plant does not switch to superficial (dew) roots. This amount can be reduced by mulching the crop with straw.
With a rare irrigation scheme, choosing the age and ripening period of the grapes, you can use the standards presented in the table in another article.

Frost resistance and the need for shelter

The cultivated plant can withstand temperatures down to -24 ° C, but the buds are more sensitive to frost. Therefore, for the winter, the variety is covered with a special material.

The preparation of the plant takes place in several stages: processing, watering at the root, mulching, covering, bending down. Only then the bush is covered with earth.

Shelter for the winter is a very important step for the preservation of many grape varieties after wintering.

Diseases and pests

Grapes are susceptible to powdery mildew (4 points), to mildew an average resistance of 3 points, 1.5 points resistant to gray rot and 2.5 points to phylloxera root.

As a preventive measure to prevent disease, regular cutting and spraying of grapes with special solutions is used.

Storage

The grapes are stored by cuttings in the cellar or in the refrigerator (if the first is not available), sprinkled with water when checking the condition.
