One of the most widely planted grape varieties in the world, Red Globe is highly regarded by breeders and consumers alike. The spectacular look of the bunches, the pleasant refreshing combination of sweetness and acidity in the berries, the recognizable skin tone - all this makes it attractive for growing. And also grapes are found under the names Red Globe, Red Earth, Globo Royo, Rose LTO, 10-23D.

Breeding history

The variety was obtained by crossing varieties L 12-80 and S 45-48 by Harold Olmo, a specialist at the University of California. It was added to the US registry after the necessary tests in 1980. Initially, Red Globe is a complex intraspecific hybrid.

Geography of distribution

In Russia, the variety is grown in the southern regions, as it is very thermophilic. In the United States, it is cultivated in the climatic zone of California and other southern states. Distributed in China and Japan, Latin America.

Description

The table variety belongs to the low-growing and medium-growing varieties of grapes. Red Globe, when grown in its own rooted culture, does not gain a significant height of shoots. The variety is significantly influenced by factors such as climatic and soil conditions of cultivation.

Ripening period

Red Globe is characterized by late ripening. It takes 140-155 days for the berries to reach technical ripeness. In the south of the Russian Federation, it is harvested by mid-October.

Bunches

The brushes on the bush reach a mass of 1000 g. They have a conical shape, average density.

Berries

Red Globe is distinguished by a red tint of the peel of ripe fruits, it is thin, but rather strong, does not crack when pressed. Inside the juicy pulp there are 4 seeds that darken as they ripen. The fruits are round, 24-28 mm in diameter, large, reaching a weight of 10-15 g. The berries are characterized by the presence of a white bloom, which gives them a purple hue.

Taste

The variety is highly regarded for its simple, pleasant and harmonious taste.

Yield

The grapes are quite fruitful.

The choice of planting material
Experienced gardeners recommend that beginners take cuttings and seedlings from those who made them from their vines and are professionally engaged in the production of such material.
You can evaluate the quality by cutting off a small amount of bark. When growing a bush from a cuttings and observing the rules of agricultural technology, survival rate is about 90%, the high quality of the plant is practically guaranteed. It is possible to control the development of grapes at all stages.
Subject to the rules of agricultural technology, survival rate is about 100%. The seedlings must be healthy. Pay attention to the absence of blisters, growths, or other signs of disease.

Growing features

To increase the yield, grapes are recommended to be grown not on vertical, but on T-shaped trellises. And also it develops well on arches and in gazebos, with horizontal growth. When growing, it requires intensive care, compliance with all necessary agrotechnical measures. When planted on a rootstock, it gives good fruiting rates, but is not suitable for grafting on Teleki 5A grapes.

To increase the color of the berries, the Red Globe bush is subjected to the removal of excess leaves from the brushes a week after the start of their shade change. During the ripening period, you need to protect the fruits from sunburn. It is better to plant plants in partial shade, or cover them for this period in extreme heat.

Landing

The variety is propagated by cuttings.Landing in the ground is carried out in the fall, no later than 45 days before the onset of cold weather. This is enough for the seedling to give roots and prepare for wintering. In spring, the plants are transferred to the ground when the air temperature reaches a stable level of +10 degrees.

Suitable for planting are sunny, sheltered from drafts, places with a loose and fertile soil composition. The pit is formed up to 0.5 m deep. A cushion of gravel, woody humus, fertile soil is built at its bottom. A drip irrigation tube is installed inside. The roots of the seedling are pre-dipped in a liquid mixture of clay and rotted cow dung, straightened on a constructed mound, sprinkled, slightly shaking the stem to remove voids.

Landing features
In order for the vine to give a signal harvest after 3 years, it is necessary to take into account many factors - from the type of soil on the site to the nearby plants.

Pollination

Red Globe has bisexual flowers. No additional effort is required for fertilization.

Pruning

It is recommended to prune the vine to 6-8 eyes. The variety grows better when formed with a large supply of old wood. Weak shoots must be removed. Normalize no more than 1 bunch for each fruitful vine. At the end of flowering, it is necessary to remove the lower part of the bunch, leaving up to 3-4 branches.

Pruning is one of the main grape care procedures. Depending on the purpose of pruning and the type of plant, the appropriate type of formation is selected.
Irrigation schemes
In order for the berries to be large and juicy, it is necessary to organize full watering and feeding. All standards must be adjusted for weather conditions and the rate of evaporation of the liquid.
With a frequent watering scheme, it is recommended to moisturize once every two weeks (that is, twice a month during flowering and the appearance of berries) so that the earth is saturated 50 cm deep so that the plant does not switch to superficial (dew) roots. This amount can be reduced by mulching the crop with straw.
With a rare irrigation scheme, choosing the age and maturation of the grapes, you can use the standards presented in the table in another article.

Frost resistance and the need for shelter

The grapes need shelter during the winter. The Red Glob variety can withstand a decrease in ambient temperature to -22 degrees.

Shelter for the winter is a very important step for the preservation of many grape varieties after wintering.

Diseases and pests

The variety is not resistant to fungal diseases. In general, his performance is below average. Very sensitive to black spot, mildew, powdery mildew. He definitely needs regular fungicidal treatment with Bordeaux mixture. To protect against pests, the crown is thinned out, the soil is loosened, and fallen leaves are removed.

Storage

Red Globe tolerates transportation well, the appearance of the berries does not suffer from it. The shelf life is 90-120 days.

Review overview

According to Russian gardeners, the cultivation of the Red Glob variety requires very careful attention. Many people point to the low sugar content of the berries when they are early removed from the bush. They come out pretty watery. It is noted that even the signal clusters are formed very large. There have been cases of oidium lesions, which greatly complicates the full maturation of the brushes.
