Nelson is a table grape variety. The variety is a novelty and therefore little studied. However, having considered the experience of gardeners who tried to grow on the Nelson site, we can draw some conclusions regarding the agricultural technology of this grape.

Breeding history

The variety was bred by the national breeder Burdak A.V. It is the result of crossing the grapes Gift to Zaporozhye and Druzhba.

Description

The vine is characterized by great vigor of growth, reaching a height of 1.6 meters. The shoots are powerful, strong, 2 cm thick. The leaves have a rich green color, develop in the shape of a trefoil, slightly dissected at the ends.

Ripening period

Nelson is an early ripening variety. The first berries can be enjoyed after 110-115 days. Usually the first bunches ripen in mid-August.

Bunches

The bunches are conical in shape, their weight is 700-1500 g.

Berries

The fruits are yellow, there are 1-2 seeds inside, the berries are round in shape, but slightly elongated. The weight of the fruits is 15 g, and their length is 2 cm.

Taste

Taste properties are highly appreciated by winegrowers. The pulp is sweet, fleshy, melts in the mouth, muscat notes are felt.

Yield

Nelson belongs to high-yielding varieties, but even the average figure is difficult to determine due to the lack of knowledge of the variety.

The choice of planting material
Experienced gardeners recommend that beginners take cuttings and seedlings from those who made them from their vines and are professionally engaged in the production of such material.
You can evaluate the quality by cutting off a small amount of bark. When growing a bush from a cuttings and observing the rules of agricultural technology, survival rate is about 90%, the high quality of the plant is practically guaranteed. It is possible to control the development of grapes at all stages.
Subject to the rules of agricultural technology, survival rate is about 100%. The seedlings must be healthy. Pay attention to the absence of blisters, growths, or other signs of disease.

Growing features

If you focus on the opinion of gardeners who have tried themselves in growing this variety, then we can conclude that it requires classic care. That is, cultivation includes:

  • watering, usually the grapes are watered 1-2 times a month;

  • sanitary pruning;

  • top dressing: in the spring, organic matter and mineral fertilizers are applied; in the fall, complex formulations are suitable, but with a low amount of nitrogen;

  • treatment against parasites.

Landing

Before planting a bush, use a few guidelines.

  • Do not plant the plant in wetlands or lowlands.

  • Give preference to areas that are sheltered from the wind and not on the north side.

  • Place the bush as far away from buildings, trees and other objects as possible. The optimal distance to the nearest fruit trees is 4 m.

  • The soil must be enriched with organic matter. If stony soil is chosen, organic matter should be added to the planting pit; if planting is carried out on heavy clay soil, then it is important to organize drainage from expanded clay or gravel.

The planting process itself includes a number of stages.

  1. Dig a hole 0.8 m in diameter.

  2. The earth pulled out of the hole is divided into a lower part and a part dug out from above.

  3. Drainage is laid in the pit.

  4. The top layer is mixed with humus, ash and superphosphate and the resulting mixture is poured into the pit.

  5. The next layer is using ordinary earth.

  6. Watering is carried out with 2-3 buckets of water.

  7. A seedling is planted, but only three weeks after the preparation of the pit, so that the earth has time to settle.

Landing features
In order for the vine to give a signal harvest after 3 years, it is necessary to take into account many factors - from the type of soil on the site to the nearby plants.

Pollination

Nelson has bisexual flowers, which means that he is self-pollinated, and he will not need other varieties for pollination.

Pruning

An important stage in crop care is sanitary pruning. Held twice a season. During spring pruning, all shoots frozen over the winter are removed; autumn pruning involves the elimination of weak branches that will not survive the winter. According to gardeners, the variety is not characterized by thickening, so thinning is not necessary.

Pruning is one of the main grape care procedures. Depending on the purpose of pruning and the type of plant, the appropriate type of formation is selected.
Irrigation schemes
In order for the berries to be large and juicy, it is necessary to organize full watering and feeding. All standards must be adjusted for weather conditions and the rate of evaporation of the liquid.
With a frequent watering scheme, it is recommended to moisturize once every two weeks (that is, twice a month during flowering and the appearance of berries) so that the earth is saturated 50 cm deep so that the plant does not switch to superficial (dew) roots. This amount can be reduced by mulching the crop with straw.
With a rare irrigation scheme, choosing the age and maturation of the grapes, you can use the standards presented in the table in another article.

Frost resistance and the need for shelter

The lowest temperature that the Nelson variety can withstand is -23 degrees. Therefore, in regions with a mild climate, the bush can not be covered for the winter. In the northern regions, it is better to take care of the insulation of the plant, you can cover it with non-woven material, or build a greenhouse.

Shelter for the winter is a very important step for the preservation of many grape varieties after wintering.

Diseases and pests

There is no official information about the disease and insect lesions of the variety yet, but if we study the experience of gardeners, we can conclude that, subject to all the rules of agricultural technology, the resistance to lesions in this grape is high.

Storage

Bunches can hang on branches for a long time. At the same time, the taste of the berries only becomes sweeter. However, it is recommended to organize the harvest before mid-September, otherwise the berries will lose their nutmeg flavor and may turn into raisins.

The bunches are characterized by a good presentation, which persists for a long time when the crop is stored in the cellar. And also the variety is characterized by good transportability.
