The popular table grape Krasa Severa, also known as Olga, has managed to attract the attention of dowsers for its outstanding qualities. He bears fruit one of the first in the garden, is not afraid of cold weather and drought, high humidity. The beauty of the North is highly appreciated by both amateurs and professionals in the field of viticulture.

Breeding history

The variety was obtained by specialists of the Federal State Budgetary Scientific Institution named after I. IV Michurin in 1976, until 1994 passed state variety trials, then was entered in the State Register. When breeding it, the parent plants Zarya Severa and Taifi pink were used. The grapes are zoned for the Central Black Earth Region. The original name Olga was given by the breeder spouses, but later changed to the Beauty of the North.

Description

Vigorous grapes, with large, very slightly pubescent leaves underneath. The vine ripens well, up to 90-95% of the total mass of shoots. The growth per year can be 3 m. The vine is brown, strong, strong.

Ripening period

The variety is very early, ripens in 110 days with the sum of active temperatures over 2200 degrees Celsius. On average, the collection begins at the end of August.

Bunches

The shape of the brush is conical, branched, can have medium density or be loose. The average weight of a bunch reaches 250 g.

Berries

The beauty of the North bears fruit with large berries of a weakly oval shape, collected on the brushes. The skin is white, with a pinkish tinge, the pulp is juicy and fleshy, there are 2-4 seeds inside.

Taste

The total tasting score is 8 points. The taste of the berry itself is simple, sweet, with an acidity ratio of 5.4 g / dm3 and sugar in the range of 160-170 g / dm3. It is well suited for fresh consumption. The skin has a slightly herbaceous flavor with a tinge of astringency.

Yield

High-yielding grapes. At least 10 kg of ripe berries are harvested from the bush.

The choice of planting material
Experienced gardeners recommend that beginners take cuttings and seedlings from those who made them from their vines and are professionally engaged in the production of such material.
You can evaluate the quality by cutting off a small amount of bark. When growing a bush from a cuttings and observing the rules of agricultural technology, survival rate is about 90%, the high quality of the plant is practically guaranteed. It is possible to control the development of grapes at all stages.
Subject to the rules of agricultural technology, survival rate is about 100%. The seedlings must be healthy. Pay attention to the absence of blisters, growths, or other signs of disease.

Growing features

The variety is grown on sandy and sandy loam soils, characterized by increased moisture permeability. The young vine will need a garter as it grows. The stepchildren above 1 or 2 sheets are removed. It is better to install the trellises immediately, in 3-4 rows, this is especially important for the trench planting method.

Landing

Planting bushes according to the 2 × 3 m scheme is considered optimal for the Beauty of the North, each plant needs at least 6 m2 of its own space. When choosing a location, preference is given to very sunny areas without shade. The variety is contraindicated for placement in lowlands, as well as on northern slopes or along roads. Rows of plants are arranged in a north-south direction, ensuring that they receive the maximum amount of sunlight during the day.

In cold regions, trench planting is recommended to protect against frost. In this case, the depth of the ditch is in the range of 30-40 cm.Pits 80 × 80 cm are placed inside with a distance of 2 m. They are fenced off with pieces of slate or boards, drained in the bottom area, sprinkled with a layer of chips and branches. The optimal composition of the soil when planting: 2-3 buckets of humus, 300 g of superphosphate, 5 kg of wood ash, sprinkled with garden soil.

The optimal time for transferring plants to open ground is 1 decade of June, when they are no longer threatened by recurrent frosts. The roots are removed from the package, shaken slightly, and the plants are placed in the pit. Then the trench is covered with earth so that about 30-40 cm remains to the edges, slightly compacted. Each plant is watered with 2 buckets of water.

Landing features
In order for the vine to give a signal harvest after 3 years, it is necessary to take into account many factors - from the type of soil on the site to the nearby plants.

Pollination

Cross-pollination is not required. The variety gives bisexual flowers, which provide it with a fairly intensive formation of ovaries.

Pruning

Due to the small percentage of fruitful shoots - no more than 40-45%, grape pruning is carried out with the preservation of 8-10 eyes. The bushes are shaped like a fan, with 4 main arms. Pruning is carried out in the spring. The old vines are shortened more, up to 6-8 eyes. In general, there should be no more than 40 shoots per bush - 1 per brush.

Pruning is one of the main grape care procedures. Depending on the purpose of pruning and the type of plant, the appropriate type of formation is selected.

Watering

Plants require abundant watering, especially in early summer. It is recommended to keep the soil moist. It is better to choose the time for watering at sunrise or after sunset, avoiding drops of moisture on the leaves. For the rest of the period, it is recommended to use drip irrigation systems in the vineyard.

Irrigation schemes
In order for the berries to be large and juicy, it is necessary to organize full watering and feeding. All standards must be adjusted for weather conditions and the rate of evaporation of the liquid.
With a frequent irrigation scheme, it is recommended to moisturize once every two weeks (that is, twice a month during flowering and the appearance of berries) so that the earth is saturated 50 cm deep so that the plant does not switch to superficial (dew) roots. This amount can be reduced by mulching the crop with straw.
With a rare irrigation scheme, having chosen the age and ripening period of the grapes, you can use the standards presented in the table in another article.

Top dressing

The beauty of the North, although it is considered an unpretentious grape variety, still needs careful care. Bushes require root and foliar feeding. The first ones fall in early spring, as soon as the protective layers of the shelter are removed. In the vineyard, grooves are dug into which nitrogen, potash and phosphorus fertilizers are laid in an amount of 50/30/40 g.

Closer to flowering, about 10 days before it begins, a bucket of liquid solution of chicken manure is added under each bush. To it add 20 g of superphosphate and the same amount of potassium salt. The procedure ends with abundant watering. Top dressing is repeated after the formation of pea-sized berries. During their ripening, potassium-phosphorus mixtures in granules are added under the bushes, and foliar irrigation is also performed with universal complexes of microelements.

Frost resistance and the need for shelter

Frost resistance indicators are low, grapes can withstand a drop in atmospheric temperatures to a level of -25 degrees. She needs shelter for the winter.

Shelter for the winter is a very important step for the preservation of many grape varieties after wintering.

Diseases and pests

In terms of disease resistance, the variety shows good results. It is susceptible to powdery mildew and mildew, and requires prophylactic treatment with fungicidal compositions. In the spring, spraying with a solution of colloidal sulfur and Bordeaux liquid is carried out. The variety is resistant to gray rot. Against phylloxera, treatment is needed only in the southern regions; in the north, the bushes are not affected by it.

Among pests, wasps and hornets show the greatest interest in this grape variety. Special traps are used against them, as well as protective bags on the hands.

Storage

The variety lends itself well to storage. When kept on bushes for a long time, it does not deteriorate even at high atmospheric humidity.

Review overview

According to most owners, Krasa Severa grapes are consistent with the description given by the breeders. The variety is successfully cultivated even in Omsk, due to the short ripening period, it manages to reach ripeness before the cold weather. The peas are not very noticeable, and the average weight of the brushes in most bushes reaches 500 g. It is noted that in the sun the berries acquire a brownish tan. In general, the impression is quite positive, in the central regions of Russia the Beauty of the North is grown even without shelter for the winter.

Many growers refuse to grow this variety due to its susceptibility to fungal diseases, in particular mildew. And it is also mentioned that with high humidity, the berries show a tendency to cracking. Resourceful growers even erect canopies over the bushes to protect them from excess moisture. And also the owners are not too happy with the low sugar content.
