The Carnival grape is a hybrid variety bred by E.G. Pavlovsky. It can be grown both in a small summer cottage for home consumption and in large areas for production purposes.

Breeding history

The Karnaval variety was bred in 2015 by the famous winegrower Evgeny Georgievich Pavlovsky. It was first presented to connoisseurs and amateurs at the Grapes Without Borders festival, which took place in 2016 in Novocherkassk. However, due to severe frosts in 2016, all the vines of the new variety died at the originator. Because of this, the Carnival grapes did not immediately spread quickly among other winegrowers. But several vines have been preserved by Ukrainian breeders. The new hybrid variety got its name thanks to A.I. Kitaychenko, a vine grower from Lugansk.

Description

The Carnival grape belongs to the table varieties, it is common in the southern regions of the country. Vigorous bushes with bisexual flowers and standard sized leaves. Cuttings root fairly easily. The vines ripen well.

Ripening period

In the southern regions, the Carnival grapes ripen in early August. Ripening period is approximately 110-115 days. On the bushes, the harvest is well preserved for one month without loss of taste.

Bunches

The bunches look very neat and attractive. They are conical in shape, some have separate branches. The average weight of one bunch is 500-700 grams. Under good climatic and weather conditions, the weight can reach one kilogram. The berries on a bunch are very close to each other.

Berries

Ripe berries have a dense, fleshy pulp and a rather thin skin. The weight of each berry is 12-15 grams, and the length is 4.5-5 cm. Ripe berries have a rich red color, sometimes turning into a rather dark shade, they have an elongated, slightly curved shape. A distinctive feature of the Carnival variety is a slight interception in the middle. The grapes are resistant to cracking.

Taste

Ripe berries have a harmonious taste with a pleasant sweet and sour flavor. The skin of the fruit is very thin, so it is easily eaten.

Yield

Grape bushes are characterized by increased productivity. Starting from the very first eyes, they are all fruitful and can tie 2-3 inflorescences.

The choice of planting material
Experienced gardeners recommend that beginners take cuttings and seedlings from those who made them from their vines and are professionally engaged in the production of such material.
You can evaluate the quality by cutting off a small amount of bark. When growing a bush from a cuttings and observing the rules of agricultural technology, survival rate is about 90%, the high quality of the plant is practically guaranteed. It is possible to control the development of grapes at all stages.
Subject to the rules of agricultural technology, survival rate is about 100%. The seedlings must be healthy. Pay attention to the absence of blisters, growths, or other signs of disease.

Growing features

When growing Carnival grapes, it is important to pay attention to climatic conditions. With short summers and snowy winters, seedlings are planted in bulk beds, which will provide the roots with warmth in the summer. In the case of a frosty winter with little snow, planting is best done in a trench or pit, this will protect the root system from frost.

This variety can be planted in spring or fall. The simplest method is to plant grape seedlings in holes in the fall. When choosing a site for cultivation, it must be remembered that the Carnival does not like the presence of groundwater.

Landing

Landing is carried out in a windless dry place with good illumination. It is necessary to dig a hole, the size corresponding to the root system of the seedling. Fertilize the bottom of the pit with organic and mineral compounds, which are then covered with a layer of gravel. Next, small planks are laid, it is recommended to use wood chips in order to preserve moisture in the soil, pour a layer of soil on top.

Before planting, the roots must be treated with a solution of humus and clay in a 1: 2 ratio. The seedling must be placed in a prepared hole, spreading the roots. Next, you need to cover the hole with earth and tamp it. At the end of the planting procedure, water the seedling with warm water. It is required to leave a distance of at least 1.5 meters between the bushes. The distance from the nearest fruit trees should be more than 4 meters.

Landing features
In order for the vine to give a signal harvest after 3 years, it is necessary to take into account many factors - from the type of soil on the site to the nearby plants.

Pollination

Pollination is the transfer of pollen from one flower to another. Grape flowers can be cross-pollinated or self-pollinated. Artificial pollination is not required for Carnival grapes.

Pruning

Pruning of grapes is carried out in the fall, after all the leaves have fallen off. This removes most of the branches. Typically, approximately 5 of the strongest branches are left on the vine. In the spring, additional pruning is carried out when diseased and frozen shoots are removed. It is also recommended to prune Carnival grapes throughout the season in order to get rid of the shoots that have formed incorrectly.

Pruning is one of the main grape care procedures. Depending on the purpose of pruning and the type of plant, the appropriate type of formation is selected.

Watering

Watering should be stopped about 10 days before flowering, otherwise the flowers may crumble. Three-year-old grapes need only 4-5 waterings for the whole season, which are carried out in the most important phases of development.

Irrigation schemes
In order for the berries to be large and juicy, it is necessary to organize full watering and feeding. All standards must be adjusted for weather conditions and the rate of evaporation of the liquid.
With a frequent watering scheme, it is recommended to moisturize once every two weeks (that is, twice a month during flowering and the appearance of berries) so that the earth is saturated 50 cm deep so that the plant does not switch to superficial (dew) roots. This amount can be reduced by mulching the crop with straw.
With a rare irrigation scheme, choosing the age and maturation of the grapes, you can use the standards presented in the table in another article.

Top dressing

The Carnival variety needs to be fed from time to time, this activates growth and also increases yields. Root or foliar (on leaves) top dressing can be applied.

Frost resistance and the need for shelter

This grape variety can be classified as frost-resistant, as its limit is -23 degrees Celsius. In rather cold winters, it is recommended to cover the grape bushes. After the appearance of night frosts, the vines must be removed from the supports and pressed with brackets to the ground. After processing with a solution of copper sulfate, cover the bushes with plastic wrap. In the spring, you need to open the vines only after the sudden temperature drops have ceased.

Shelter for the winter is a very important step for the preservation of many grape varieties after wintering.

Diseases and pests

Carnival grapes are very resistant to various diseases, including fungal ones. Berries are not damaged by wasps and birds. To protect the plant from diseases, it is required to carry out treatment with fungicides. The first treatment should be carried out during the budding of the vine, the second - shortly before the beginning of the flowering period.

Grapes can be affected by insects (mites, aphids). If damage is found during inspection of the plant, it is necessary to treat the bushes with acaricides and insecticides.

Storage

For storage, you need to select loose clusters with a strong green crest. Only fully ripe grapes must be removed from the branches, since they do not have the property to ripen during storage. The removed bunches should not be left in direct sunlight. Store grapes in a well-ventilated, unheated room. Bunches can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 4 months. At the same time, they are neatly stacked on the shelves in one layer.

Review overview

Winegrowers note the high yield of Cardinal grape bushes with proper care. As well as the attractive appearance of a ripe bunch, which is popular with potential buyers. It is quite convenient to transport ripe bunches, because the berries during transportation practically do not deform, do not squeeze or crack. Early ripening also causes positive feedback, which allows harvesting as early as late July - early August.

Carnival grapes are currently popular due to their attractive appearance and pleasant rich taste.
