Grape Black Doctor

Wine is a noble drink that takes its origins from ancient times. And growing grapes is a whole art. Each wine is named after the grape variety used in its production. Grape varieties have different colors, tastes, and different purposes. This "special" grade is the Black Doctor.

The development of wine based on the Black Doctor variety began in the 1930s, but was not in demand until the 60s. The original name of the grape variety is Ekim kara, which means Black Doctor or Black Doctor. The name is not accidental, since it is wine based on this type that heals joint pain and muscle spasms, liver pathologies, is used for the prevention of cancer and many other ailments.

There is a legend that they began to call grapes and wine made from it the Black Doctor after an absurd incident. A physician healed a dying colonel by giving him a jug of wine made from a then unnamed grape variety. The colonel felt better, but exhausted and drunk he fell asleep at the same moment. After his awakening, he remembered absolutely nothing and, seeing the doctor in front of him, indiscriminately shot him. The people say that after this there was also a wine named after the colonel - the Black Colonel.

In addition to the names Black Doctor, Black Doctor and Ekim Kara, the variety is called Kefesia and Kefe raisins.

The cultivation of this technical variety occurs exclusively in the Crimea and belongs to the group of eastern vineyards.

This variety is often used to create juices, compotes and preserves, as well as wine and other alcoholic beverages. The juice of the grapes itself has no color. The Black Doctor variety contains 2-4 seeds in each berry.

Ripening of grapes varies from 130 to 157 days and is calculated from the beginning of the growing season, that is, from the highest activity of the plant. It all depends on the surrounding climate and temperature changes.

Most often, the bunches are broadly conical or lobed. The density is loose. The weight of the bunch is 148 grams, the length is about 16 cm, and the width is about 12 cm. They contain up to 90% of the pulp and only 4% of the skin.

The berries are deep black, have a rich waxy layer. The skin is thick, the flesh is juicy and the shape is round. Each berry weighs on average 3-5 grams.

Black Doctor has an amazingly harmonious taste, combining notes of chocolate and prunes.

High yield is one of the many advantages of the Black Doctor. The fruitfulness of the shoots is 60% on average.

Planting occurs with pollinating varieties such as Saperavi, Bastardo Magarach and others.

When planting, it is imperative to take into account the access of light to the plant, since the sweetness of the berries depends on the rays of the sun. To facilitate maintenance and collection, the bushes are tied onto trellises with a height of 2 meters.

Early spring and late autumn are favorable times for planting.

The black doctor has a functional-female type of flower, which means that the variety cannot self-pollinate. Therefore, in addition to artificial pollination, which can be done both manually and with the help of special devices, additional pollination with a variety of any bisexual grape is required. To do this, when planting 2 different varieties, they are planted through one, providing the so-called cross-pollination.

Pruning always takes place in winter, since the sap flow inside the grapes slows down or completely stops. This means that the vines will not be damaged.

The grapes are grown in the southern regions and in most cases do not require special shelter. Has a very high frost resistance up to -23 degrees.

The most important diseases of the Black Doctor grapes are mildew and oidium.

Mildew is a fungus, after the appearance of which the leaves and buds turn yellow and eventually fall off. If you do not take measures for the processing of plants in time, then there is the possibility of losing the entire crop.

Oidium is a gray-white bloom that makes the berries completely unsuitable for making wine. The fight against this disease is the same as with mildew - treating the bushes with a special solution containing sulfur.

The Black Doctor is stored in the same way as all grape varieties. A drawer, refrigerator or suspended state - it doesn't matter. The main thing is to observe the temperature and humidity necessary for the berries.
