Grapes are considered a rather difficult crop to grow. But the same cannot be said about the Amur White variety. Able to take root in almost any climatic conditions, this variety has long been a frequent "guest" in the summer cottages of gardeners in Russia and other countries.

Breeding history

The progenitor of the Amur white grape is a wild grape vine, which has been growing in Asian countries for many centuries. The amazing features of the eastern liana were noticed by the Russian breeder A.I. Potapenko. On its basis, a new variety was created that is not afraid of frost. Its second name is Amurensis.

Geography of distribution

The variety is widespread in Russia, Ukraine and Belarus. It can be grown in any place with a similar climate.

Description

The Amur white grape is a vigorous plant that looks very similar to a deciduous liana. The vine grows up to 30 meters, in one season its growth is about 2 meters. The leaves are green, juicy, and have a sharp tip. They are similar in shape to a circle or oval. In the fall, the foliage is colored purple, red or orange. The culture blooms in early May. The flowers are unremarkable, they have a white-yellow color.

Gardeners have identified the following advantages of the Amur white grapes:

  • quick recovery from illness or frostbite;

  • resistance to cold, temperature extremes;

  • comparative resistance to fungal diseases;

  • easy care;

  • high taste of berries;

  • ability to endure transportation;

  • a bountiful harvest.

Disadvantages are also noted:

  • the bush is very tall, so it is simply impossible to harvest the entire crop;

  • during the entire growing season, the plant needs pruning.

Ripening period

Amur white belongs to the early middle varieties. He needs 100 days to fully ripen. The culture begins to bear fruit at 6-8 years. The crop is removed in the first month of autumn.

Bunches

Amur white grapes produce large clusters weighing up to 800 grams. Their shape is cylindrical-conical, the blades are highly developed. Fruits on the bunches are loose.

Berries

The berries of Amur White are expected to have a white shade with a matte sheen. They are slightly oval in shape. The weight of one berry is 5 grams, the size is considered large.

The pulp inside is rather juicy, light in color, with a slight greenish undertone. The skin is dense and thin and very easy to chew.

Taste

The taste is simple, harmonious, the amount of sugar is 250 g / dm3, the acidity is 7 g / dm3.

Yield

Amursky is considered a high-yielding variety. From 60 to 80 centners of berries are removed from a hectare. Shoots bear 80% fruit.

The choice of planting material
Experienced gardeners recommend that beginners take cuttings and seedlings from those who made them from their vines and are professionally engaged in the production of such material.
You can evaluate the quality by cutting off a small amount of bark. When growing a bush from a cuttings and observing the rules of agricultural technology, survival rate is about 90%, the high quality of the plant is practically guaranteed. It is possible to control the development of grapes at all stages.
Subject to the rules of agricultural technology, survival rate is about 100%. The seedlings must be healthy.Pay attention to the absence of blisters, growths, or other signs of disease.

Growing features

Amur white grapes are very easy to care for. Even a beginner can master the cultivation of this variety. Such a plant is cultivated on a level or slightly elevated place, you can plant it near a wall or fence to create a beautiful hedge. The grapes must be illuminated by the sun, only then will its fruits be tasty. Amursky is not planted near fruit trees, since it will quickly begin to braid them.

When growing Amur White, it is very important to loosen the soil in a timely manner, since grapes need a lot of oxygen. This should be done before watering. In addition, the variety will definitely need support. Fruiting shoots are tied up horizontally.

Landing

It is very important to correctly determine the time of planting the Amur White in the ground. Seedlings can be planted in October or April. Spring planting is especially popular with those who propagate grapes by layering. In the fall, it is better to start sowing seeds.

The soil should be medium to low acidity. If the indicators go off scale, lime or ash is added to the soil. Landing will depend on the type of soil.

  • If the land is sandy, then landing in trenches is practiced. You will need to dig grooves 20 cm deep and 50 cm wide. The walls of the grooves must be reinforced with stone or wood. Then sprouts are planted in the grooves.

  • In clay and loamy areas, it is recommended to plant grapes in ridges. The site is leveled, holes are made on it with a depth of 60 cm, on the bottom of which drainage must be placed.

Landing features
In order for the vine to give a signal harvest after 3 years, it is necessary to take into account many factors - from the type of soil on the site to the nearby plants.

Pollination

Most of the Amur white grapes are dioecious, but in rare cases bisexual specimens are also found. Male flowers appear earlier than female flowers. Pollination occurs with the help of insects, and wind plays an important role here.

Pruning

The first year of life, the plant should not be touched so that it can strengthen well. In the second year, the branches are pruned, and the tops are pinched. The pruning procedure is carried out only after antennae and inflorescences appear on the bush. Start trimming the grapes from the bottom.

Amur white experienced gardeners advise growing with a stem. Shoots on perennial branches are removed every season. Pinch the top a couple of days before flowering. During pruning, you can take green cuttings, which are then used for propagation.

Pruning is one of the main grape care procedures. Depending on the purpose of pruning and the type of plant, the appropriate type of formation is selected.

Watering

Plants up to three years old need to be watered abundantly, because in the wild, such a vine is usually found near open water sources. The liquid is poured directly under the root, you will need about 6 ten-liter buckets per bush. After watering, the plants are mulched. A week before flowering, the liquid supply is completely stopped, otherwise the harvest will be poor.

Irrigation schemes
In order for the berries to be large and juicy, it is necessary to organize full watering and feeding. All standards must be adjusted for weather conditions and the rate of evaporation of the liquid.
With a frequent watering scheme, it is recommended to moisturize once every two weeks (that is, twice a month during flowering and the appearance of berries) so that the earth is saturated 50 cm deep so that the plant does not switch to superficial (dew) roots. This amount can be reduced by mulching the crop with straw.
With a rare irrigation scheme, choosing the age and maturation of the grapes, you can use the standards presented in the table in another article.

Top dressing

Amur white grapes respond well to complex mineral fertilizers. If the plant grows on fertile land, one top dressing per season will be enough.In the case of poor soil, fertilizer is applied three times: in spring, before and after flowering. Important: this variety is not fertilized with organic matter.

Frost resistance and the need for shelter

In mild climates, the vines do not cover the grapes, they already feel great under the snow. The exception is young specimens, as well as cases when the temperature drops too low. In such a situation, the vine is placed on the ground, covered with agrofibre and spruce branches are placed on top. It is necessary to remove such a shelter at a time when temperature changes are no longer expected.

Shelter for the winter is a very important step for the preservation of many grape varieties after wintering.

Diseases and pests

Amur white grapes are resistant to diseases such as mildew, oidium, gray rot. However, in conditions of high humidity and with improper agricultural technology, he can still get sick. To prevent this from happening, the gardener needs to regularly thin out the crop, removing all unnecessary, and also carry out preventive treatments with fungicides and insecticides. Works are carried out in autumn and spring.

Storage

If the grapes are grown for themselves, they can be kept in the refrigerator for a long time. When cultivated on an industrial scale, cool cellars are often used. The culture can be in them for several weeks. Before storing it, it is important to select rotten and spoiled berries.
