People have always worried about the safety of their home library. Nowadays, the furniture market offers a large selection of all kinds of shelves, cabinets, and shelves for placing books, among which you can always choose the option that best suits your interior. In our review, we will talk about open shelving.

Advantages and disadvantages

Shelving is a versatile storage solution for books, toys and small decorative items. They have a number of advantages over solid cabinets.

  • Open shelves visually relieve space. This is especially true when they are installed in a studio apartment or small room.

  • Accessibility and clarity of everything that is placed on the shelf. This makes it easier to find the edition you want.

  • Aesthetic component. Shelves and their internal content can serve as a decorative piece of furniture, a bright accent, or even a real art object.

  • Open shelving is always cheaper than cabinets made of the same materials. This is due to the fact that the design does not provide for sashes, doors, as well as a variety of furniture fittings.

But, if you are planning to buy an open shelving, remember that you will need the most thorough care of your books.

On open shelves, items are not protected from dust in any way, they have to be cleaned regularly, and this creates additional household chores.

Open shelves require maintaining perfect order, otherwise an uncomfortable, sloppy interior and a constant feeling of clutter await you.

If the position of the open rack in relation to the window is unsuccessful, ultraviolet rays can fall on the shelf, they cause burnout and fading of objects.

It is simply impossible to put some items on open shelves, because they will not fit into the interior decor.

Open shelving is less spacious. This is due to the fact that objects can be folded into ordinary cabinets, filling the module volume to the maximum. On such shelves, things are arranged in such a way that they look aesthetically pleasing, so some of the useful volume will remain unused.

What are they?

There are the following models of open shelving:

  • typical racks;

  • corner models for publications;

  • racks with built-in lockers;

  • products with unusual geometry.

All open-type shelving systems can be conditionally divided into two large groups: with and without a back wall.

The wall is available on all floor models with multiple shelves that lean against the wall and are held by the weight of their contents. The same furniture is sometimes made in the form of a combination of several small shelves, fixed high above the floor.

In recent years, open shelving without a back wall has become very popular. They are often used as an additional partition when zoning a room. These are light, airy structures, they do not create a feeling of congestion in the space and do not impede the access of sunlight in the room. Most often, such racks are placed to separate the recreation area in the living room or office.

Materials (edit)

Different materials are used to create shelving.

  • Chipboard Is one of the most common options. Its main advantage is its low cost. When used with high quality chipboard, these models can be very durable.They are easy to assemble and light in weight. Such models can only be used inside heated rooms. Not designed for heavy loads.

  • Array - usually pine, oak or ash wood is used. Such products can withstand a more significant load than chipboard models. Wooden shelves look very soundly, they often become an independent item of interior decor. The disadvantage of such products is their high cost.
  • Plastic - usually these racks are prefabricated items. The advantages of such designs include light weight, great color variety and low cost.
  • Drywall - one of the most budgetary options. It is mainly implemented at the handmade level. Ideal for storing small items in garages or workshops.
  • Metal - this type of shelving is usually used in warehouse storage, where sometimes heavy items have to be placed. But home models are also popular - they can be used to place houseplants, food, or work tools. They assemble rather quickly and can withstand significant weight, retain their functionality for several decades.

Selection Tips

Shelving design should correspond to the general stylistic solution of the interior. It can harmoniously fit into the overall look of the room or, on the contrary, become a bright accent in the room. Most often, books are stored on the shelves of open shelves - in this case, the weight and size of the books should be taken into account.

The average load on each shelf of the rack varies in the range of 5-15 kg, the shelves must withstand such a load. Books can have different volumes, if you own a large library, take measurements first and adjust the distance between individual shelves. And, of course, any rack structures should be as ergonomic as possible. Arrange the rows of books so that the books do not hang from the shelves, but at the same time they are not stored too deeply. In the first case, it can be traumatic, and in the second, it is simply ineffective.

It cannot be considered a practical approach in which publications are placed horizontally on the shelves, since it will be quite difficult to find the right copy of the book. In addition, there is always a risk that the top books will fall on someone's head during the search. The optimal construction depth should vary between 35-50 cm, and the height and width should be determined solely by your needs and personal tastes.

The rack must be extremely reliable and have strong fasteners. This is especially true in families where there are small children - they can climb on shelves or hang on them.

Tip: In homes with children, you should not buy carousel racks, tripod models, products with drawers and glass structures. They are not safe for babies.
