Currant variety The dove seedling is an improved version of the dove bird variety. It differs from its predecessor in higher yield and immunity. Berries contain a lot of vitamin C. Suitable for making jam, jelly, compotes, freezing, drying. For fresh consumption, the berries are sour, but mashed with sugar are very tasty and perfectly stored. The leaves are added to tea, they also contain a lot of vitamin C.

Breeding history

Received at the Research Institute of Horticulture of Siberia named after V.I. M.A.Lisavenko, bred by breeders: Z.S. Zotova, L.N. Zabelina, I.P. Kalinina, M.A. Karakol and Altai dessert. Included in the State Register in 1984.

Description of the variety

The bush is medium-sized, densely leafy, compact and powerful, semi-spreading, branches can be of different thickness, straight, smooth. The roots are close to the surface. The leaf is medium-sized, heart-shaped at the base, five-lobed, concave, wrinkled, dark green, shiny.

Blooms from May to June. The flowers are small, glass-shaped, light green, with pinkish sepals, collected in dense brushes of 7-9 pcs. With a sharp cold snap, most of the buds crumble.

Characteristics of berries

Not very large, weighing 1.2-3.5 g, rounded, black, thin skin with a slight dull bloom, few seeds inside. Transport slightly immature. Stored for about a week.

Taste qualities

Sweet and sour, with a characteristic weak aroma. Sugar content 6.6% -12.9%, pectins - 1-1.9%, very high content of ascorbic acid - 147.4 mg per 100 g. Tasting score 4.2 points out of 5.

Ripening and fruiting

Begins to bear fruit 2-3 years after planting. The crop can be removed from the first decade of July. The berries ripen all at the same time, if not harvested for a very long time, some may crumble. In a very hot summer, when overripe, they tend to crack.

The fruiting of currants depends on the variety, on the region in which it grows, what is the care for it, whether all agrotechnical measures are followed. In black currant, flower buds form on branches that are one year old. So the first small crop can be harvested the next year after planting. Full fruiting begins from the third year of the shrub's life.

Yield

On average, 2-3 kg are removed from one plant, with good care - up to 5-8 kg. The plant bears fruit every year and produces roughly the same amount of harvest.

Growing regions

Recommended for planting throughout Russia, with the exception of Saratov, Volgograd and other southern regions, as well as Khanty-Mansi and Yamalo-Nenets districts.

Self-fertility and the need for pollinators

Self-fertile variety: does not need the neighborhood of other types of currants.

Landing

They choose light and non-swampy areas, grows well in lowlands, tolerates the close occurrence of groundwater well. The most suitable soil type is fertile light loam, it is better to add sand to heavy soil. It is permissible to place the bushes tightly with an interval of 70 cm or even less. With a close planting, the plants begin to bear fruit faster, but the yield will be slightly less. But they create a small shadow for each other, protect the roots from overheating and moisture evaporation.

Choose one-year and two-year-old seedlings. It is better to plant in the fall, but you can also plant it in the spring. In the middle lane, planting is carried out in early October, in the south in mid-October. And in the north - at the end of September. A pit is made 50-60 cm in diameter and 40 cm deep, it is filled ¾ with a fertile mixture and fertilizers. The seedlings are installed at an angle of 45 degrees and deepened into the ground by 8 cm, which allows the formation of basal buds. Pour 0.5 liters of water, sprinkle with soil, watered the second time with the same volume.

Not a single garden plot can do without currants. This fragrant and healthy berry is very popular. When planting currants, you need to take into account many factors and nuances. It is necessary to choose the right planting material, determine the location, and competently prepare the soil.

Growing and care

The variety is undemanding to care for. Prefers loose and moist soil, it is recommended to remove weeds regularly. It responds well to watering and feeding. Watering is recommended in the evening, especially in dry and windy weather. About 2 buckets of water go under 1 bush. Moisture should not get into the center of the plant, watered around the perimeter of the crown, preferably into a specially made hole. Before the ovaries appear, it needs intensive watering. A few weeks before picking the berries, watering is stopped.

The culture requires regular spring and autumn pruning, the cuts must be treated with garden pitch. In the spring, remove old branches and growing inward. Sanitary pruning is carried out in the fall.

They are fed annually with mineral and organic fertilizers. In the spring, the composition should be nitrogen, and in the fall - potassium and phosphorus. Nutrient mixtures are applied along the perimeter of the crown growth and slightly going beyond it.

The most important step in caring for currants is the correct moisture of the crop throughout the growing season. Due to errors in watering, you can lose most of the crop and get small and tasteless berries.
Pruning is an indispensable element of caring for any fruit shrubs, including currants. If you carry out this agrotechnical procedure at the optimal time and do it correctly and regularly, the result will not slow down to affect the quality and quantity of berries grown.
Competent preparation of currants for winter is the key to a good harvest for next year. Autumn care for currants and preparation for cold weather includes the following stages: pruning, watering, feeding, treatment from diseases and pests, shelter.
In the process of growing currants, timely feeding is an important part of care. Organic and mineral elements are necessary not only for the harmonious growth of the bush, but also for the formation of the crop. During the entire growing season, the plant needs different substances, which is important to consider when choosing a fertilizer.

Disease and pest resistance

Has good immunity to powdery mildew, anthracnose, septoria. May be attacked by a kidney mite, control measures - remove and destroy the affected kidneys. Suffering from spider mites, it is recommended to carry out regular sprinkling as a therapeutic measure. In severe cases, spraying with chemicals helps. Gallic aphid is slightly affected. They are treated with an infusion of chamomile, yarrow, garlic to keep the composition on the leaves, add 40 g of soap to 10 liters of the product. Before bud break, you can spray with insecticides: "Fufanon", "Decis", "Aktara", "Iskra".

Currant is one of the most favorite crops of gardeners, it can be found on almost any personal plot. In order for the currant berries to be tasty and large, and the bush itself to be healthy and strong, you should properly care for, treat and protect the plant from harmful insects. It is important to recognize the signs of the disease in a timely manner and begin treatment in the early stages of plant damage.

Resistance to adverse climatic conditions

Differs in drought resistance. Withstands frosts down to -35 degrees. In more severe winters, the bark freezes in places, but this has little effect on productivity. In northern regions with frosts above -38 degrees, it is recommended to make a shelter. It is considered a shade-tolerant species, but the yield in the shade decreases.

If there is a need to increase the size of the plantings of currants or to rejuvenate the shrub, then you can propagate the currants yourself. You can propagate currants in different ways: green cuttings, lignified cuttings and layering. Each of the procedures is a vegetative propagation of currants and allows you to get full-fledged seedlings without much effort.

Review overview

Gardeners speak positively about the Dove Sapling: it does not require planting of other varieties, it tolerates frost well, does not get sick, and gives a good harvest every year. It is noted that the plant adapts perfectly to any climate. Bushes bear fruit in one place for more than 20 years.
