Variety Marmeladnitsa is a technical variety of red currant. Differs in very high frost resistance, excellent immunity, unpretentious care. It is believed that the berries are suitable for universal use, but they have a sour taste due to the high content of ascorbic acid. The juice of this variety has high gelling properties: it solidifies without the addition of gelatin. Suitable for making jelly and marmalade, which is why it got its name. Berries can be dried, frozen, prepared compotes and sauces, homemade liqueurs.

Breeding history

It was created on the basis of the All-Russian Research Institute of Breeding of Fruit Crops by the breeder L. V. Bayanov when crossing the varieties Rote Shpetlese and Maarses Prominent. Included in the State Register in 2017.

Description of the variety

The bush is medium-sized, semi-spreading, dense. Branches are straight, thick, pinkish, with weak pubescence. The leaf is medium-sized, five-lobed, shiny, leathery dark green in the lower part, strongly pubescent, concave with a wavy toothed edge. In the spring, the buds appear first, and then the foliage. The flowers are green, collected in a brush of 8-12 pieces, the brushes are attached together in 3-5. Flowering lasts about 2 weeks. The culture is characterized by increased shoot formation.

Characteristics of berries

Small, weighing 0.4-0.8 g, rounded, orange-red with noticeable white veins. They are well transported, do not crumple, stored at zero temperature for about 30-40 days.

Taste qualities

Sweet and sour taste with refreshing notes. They contain sugar 7%, vitamin C - 84%, pectin - 7.7%. Tasting score 4.2 points out of a possible 5.

Ripening and fruiting

It is considered a late species in terms of ripening, the harvest can be harvested from mid-July to mid-August. Not prone to shedding, brushes may sag before the first snowfall. With irregular care, the berries may become smaller.

The fruiting of currants depends on the variety, on the region in which it grows, what is the care for it, whether all agrotechnical measures are followed. In black currant, flower buds form on branches that are one year old. So the first small crop can be harvested the next year after planting. Full fruiting begins from the third year of the shrub's life.

Yield

About 2 kg are removed from a bush for 3-4 years, from more adults - up to 5-7 kg.

Growing regions

Recommended for planting in the Central Black Earth Region and Western Siberia. Can be grown throughout Russia, with the exception of the Far North.

Self-fertility and the need for pollinators

Differs in self-fertility, but if you plant in the neighborhood next to another variety with the same flowering period, for example, the White Fairy, then the yield increases by 1.5 times.

Landing

The procedure is recommended to be carried out in the fall: in a warm climate - in October, in a cooler one - in September. Better to plant near garden paths or fences, stepping back about a meter. Planting pattern: 200 cm between bushes, and between rows - 150 cm.Can be grown on trellises, in this case the distance is 100 cm.

The soil should be loose: loamy and sandy, but not acidic - 7.5 pH.Sand is added to heavy soils, and drainage is organized, since the plant does not tolerate stagnant water in the soil.

A month before the landing event, the land is dug up and brought into 1 sq. m: 20 kg of compost, 150 g of nitroammofoska, 200 g of ash.

Planting holes are made 50 cm wide and 60 cm deep. Before planting, young bushes are kept in water for 2 hours. The root collar of the seedling is buried 6 cm into the soil. Watering, mulching. Until the seedlings take root, water it every 3-4 days.

Not a single garden plot can do without currants. This fragrant and healthy berry is very popular. When planting currants, you need to take into account many factors and nuances. It is necessary to choose the right planting material, determine the location, and competently prepare the soil.

Growing and care

Currants love abundant watering, especially during drought and fruiting. 20-30 liters of water are poured under the plant at a time. For good yields, they are fed: in the spring - with urea, during flowering - with bird droppings or mullein, in the fall - with a mixture of compost and manure in a ratio of 5: 7. Pruned in early spring, leaving about 10-12 strong shoots: 4-5 annuals and 3-4 two years old, the rest are three years old. All branches over 4 years old are recommended to be removed, as they cease to bear fruit. In the summer, after the appearance of buds, the tops of the shoots are pinched. For the winter, the area under the bush and around is cleaned of fallen leaves, loosened and mulched with a layer of 8-10 cm: spruce branches or sawdust.

The most important step in caring for currants is the correct moisture of the crop throughout the growing season. Due to errors in watering, you can lose most of the crop and get small and tasteless berries.
Pruning is an indispensable element of caring for any fruit shrubs, including currants. If you carry out this agrotechnical procedure at the optimal time and do it correctly and regularly, the result will not slow down to affect the quality and quantity of berries grown.
Competent preparation of currants for winter is the key to a good harvest for next year. Autumn care for currants and preparation for cold weather includes the following stages: pruning, watering, feeding, treatment from diseases and pests, shelter.
In the process of growing currants, timely feeding is an important part of care. Organic and mineral elements are necessary not only for the harmonious growth of the bush, but also for the formation of the crop. During the entire growing season, the plant needs different substances, which is important to consider when choosing a fertilizer.

Disease and pest resistance

Differs in good immunity to diseases and pests: it is not affected by powdery mildew, anthracnose, septoria. From pillar rust is treated with the drug "Nitrafen". Not afraid of spider mites. Of the insects, only aphids are the most dangerous. The affected areas are treated with soapy water, sprinkled with ash, can be collected and released onto the leaves of ladybugs. From the birds, special nets are thrown onto the berry branches.

Currant is one of the most favorite crops of gardeners, it can be found on almost any personal plot. In order for the currant berries to be tasty and large, and the bush itself to be healthy and strong, you should properly care for, treat and protect the plant from harmful insects. It is important to recognize the signs of the disease in a timely manner and begin treatment in the early stages of plant damage.

Resistance to adverse climatic conditions

Currant has a high level of winter hardiness: it perfectly tolerates frosts down to -35 degrees, withstands temperatures down to -45. It perfectly tolerates temperature fluctuations: sudden cold snaps or heat throughout the season. Drought resistance of the culture is average. It grows well in partial shade, in the shade of the currant, the total number of brushes decreases, the berries become smaller.

If there is a need to increase the size of the plantings of currants or to rejuvenate the shrub, then you can propagate the currants yourself. You can propagate currants in different ways: green cuttings, lignified cuttings and layering. Each of the procedures is a vegetative propagation of currants and allows you to get full-fledged seedlings without much effort.

Review overview

Gardeners note that the variety takes root better not in open areas, but in light partial shade next to a house or a fence. Many people like it for its unpretentiousness and productivity. The berries of the Marmalade are sourish, but they make a very tasty currant jelly.
