The Golden Calf pepper is ideal for cooler regions. Even in harsh conditions, it gives a rich harvest. At the same time, the fruits are large in size, juiciness and excellent taste. It is not surprising that this variety is cultivated in many garden plots.

Description of the variety

Pepper with a beautiful name can be grown outdoors almost anywhere in Russia. In the northern regions, it is usually planted in greenhouses. The variety loves light, but can develop fully in partial shade. Prolonged cloudy weather is also not an obstacle to the formation of healthy vegetables.

The marketability of the fruit is high, so this variety can often be found on commercial farms. Summer residents are also pleased with the unpretentiousness of the variety and the attractive appearance of the peppers.

Characteristics of the appearance of plants and fruits

Semi-spreading bushes usually grow up to 70-75 cm. Plants cultivated in greenhouses are sometimes slightly taller. Emerald-colored leaves, wrinkled.

Large three- or four-chambered fruits are cube-shaped. Until biological maturation, they remain dark green. Reaching absolute ripeness, the peppers acquire an orange or bright yellow tone (as the name implies). The weight of one vegetable is 104-173 g. The skin of the fruit is smooth and glossy. Wall thickness - 7-10 mm.

Purpose and taste

The fleshy, crispy flesh has a pleasant aroma and taste. Thanks to this, the fruits can be used in various culinary incarnations. They are good fresh, canned, frozen and cooked. The harvest is perfect for salads, soups, side dishes, stuffing. Winter preparations are also successful.

Ripening terms

This variety is considered mid-season. The first vegetables appear in August. At the same time, fruiting continues until September.

Yield

Up to 14 massive fruits can appear on each bush. Subject to all the rules of agricultural technology, the yield indicator reaches 257-327 c / ha. It is worth noting that the keeping quality and transportability of the peppers of this variety are excellent.

Landing scheme

No more than 5 plants should be placed on 1 square meter. With this organization of plantings, the bushes get enough space for the development and formation of the maximum possible number of vegetables.

To get a large and tasty harvest of pepper, you need to take care of the seedlings in advance. When growing pepper seedlings, you need to correctly determine the sowing time, pre-sowing seed treatment, prepare the necessary container and soil.

Growing and care

Sowing is carried out in March-April. For prophylaxis, the seed is preliminarily treated with a solution of potassium permanganate or "Fitosporin". Also, in order to accelerate growth, you can use stimulants (for example, "Epin" or "Zircon").

The seeds are placed in a loose nutritious soil, watered and left under a film. The pick is carried out as carefully as possible, since the culture does not tolerate this procedure well. In June, they start planting plants on a plot or in a greenhouse.

Caring for the bushes of this variety is quite traditional. Water them sparingly, but regularly, remembering to periodically loosen the soil. Top dressing is done with complex mineral fertilizers. Do this 3-4 times per season. Before the flowers appear, formulations with a high nitrogen content are used. During and after flowering, the soil is enriched with potassium and phosphorus. The bushes form 2 stems. The rest are removed. It is also necessary to carry out pinching (remove the shoots below the branching of the main shoots).

To harvest a tasty and rich harvest of pepper, you need to comply with all the conditions of agricultural technology, and proper care begins with planting plants. Before planting pepper in open ground, it should be prepared. It is also important to take care of the seedlings and planting space in advance.

One of the most important conditions for growing healthy and strong peppers is correct and timely watering, which is necessary for active growth, rapid rooting and good fruiting of plants in a greenhouse or open field. The soil under it should not dry out. This can be achieved by following the basic recommendations. First of all, you should be guided by the weather. In addition, the phase of development of the plants is important, as well as the way the peppers are grown - in a greenhouse or in the open field.
Although pepper has a tree-like stem structure, it still needs additional support. If the peppers are not tied up, the plants will begin to lean to the ground under the weight of ripening fruits, the stem may break. Low-growing varieties, as a rule, do not need a garter. But for tall and hybrid varieties, it is necessary.
Every summer resident who decides to grow pepper on his site must learn how to form it correctly. The formation of pepper is one of the simplest and most effective agricultural techniques that allow you to extend the term and increase the fruiting of a crop.

Soil requirements

For growing seedlings and adult bushes, a ready-made mixture intended for vegetable crops is suitable. You can also prepare nutrient soil on your own by mixing garden soil with sand, peat and wood ash. To increase fertility, you can add a little mineral fertilizers to the resulting mixture.

For good growth of pepper bushes and active fruiting, you need to regularly apply mineral and organic fertilizing to the soil. It is necessary not only to choose the right formulations, but also to use them at the right stage in the development of culture. The frequency of top dressing is always individual. It depends directly on the composition of the land on your site. The poorer the soil composition, the more often you will need to feed the pepper.

Disease and pest resistance

The only drawback of this plant variety is its vulnerability to disease. Growing the Golden Calf on the site, the gardener may detect signs of late blight (the appearance of brown spots on the leaves) or rot. In such cases, appropriate fungicidal preparations should be applied, removing the affected plant parts.

The prevention of troubles is the control of soil and air humidity, regular ventilation of the greenhouse, timely loosening and dusting of the soil with wood ash. In case of an invasion of pests, insecticides or folk remedies are used.

Pepper is one of the most common vegetables in home gardens. This culture is quite stable and unpretentious. However, under certain conditions, this plant can suffer from infections and harmful insects. Before treating peppers for diseases or pests, you need to find out the cause of the problem, otherwise the treatment may be ineffective.

Review overview

Despite some nuances of cultivation, vegetable growers speak positively of the Golden Calf variety. The cold resistance of the crop, active growth, and excellent yield indicators are noted. Large, beautiful fruits delight with juiciness and sweet taste. Peppers are stored for a long time, without losing their freshness, perfectly complement other fruits in preparations, vegetable mixtures. Also a nice bonus is the ability to collect seeds yourself.
