Yellow-fruited sweet peppers are just as popular as red varieties. These varieties ripen in medium terms, are distinguished by good size, attractive "appearance" and pleasant fruit taste. A prominent representative of the group was a large-fruited variety of Siberian selection with the sonorous name Golden-Maned Lion.

Breeding history

Golden-maned lion was bred by breeders from Novosibirsk: Dederko V.N., Ugarova S.V. and Postnikova T.N., Vladimir Nikolaevich Dederko, in addition to this variety, is the originator of many hybrids and varieties of eggplants, tomatoes and sweet peppers. He stood at the foundations of the creation of one of the leaders of the modern Russian seed market - the Siberian Garden company. In 2007, the Golden Mane Lion was patented and allowed to be cultivated in all regions of the country in open and protected ground.

Description of the variety

Golden-Maned Lion is a mid-season, high-yielding variety of sweet pepper for universal use. Bushes of medium height and spreading. The fruits are beautiful, large (weighing up to 270 g), bright yellow in the ripe phase, with excellent taste.

Characteristics of the appearance of plants and fruits

On compact, medium spreading and very low (45-50 cm) bushes with a straight, strong stem and dark green, slightly wrinkled foliage, a large number of very attractive fruits with impressive dimensions are formed: from 14 to 18 cm long and an average weight of about 180-200 g.

Peppers are distinguished by a cuboid-cylindrical shape, thick fleshy walls (8-9 mm) and a shiny, dense skin, first of a rich green, and then a golden yellow color with an orange tint. Most often, fruits contain 3-4 seed chambers.

Purpose and taste

Pepper Golden-Maned Lion is rightfully considered one of the most delicious representatives of this culture. Its taste is balanced, with a high content of sugars, the aroma is poorly expressed.

Fresh juicy and sweet peppers will decorate the vitamin summer salads. The large hollow interior of these gold "cubes" allows them to be used for stuffing. This pepper will complement any side dish with bright colors, will become part of a vegetable stew or pizza filling.

Various harvesting methods will help preserve the vitamin charge of sweet pepper for the winter: freezing, drying, pickling.

Ripening terms

The golden-maned lion belongs to the group of mid-season varieties, the fruits ripen almost three months (114-120 days) after germination. Fruiting continues throughout July and August.

Yield

This Siberian variety consistently brings a good harvest: each bush yields from 7 to 10 large peppers, and an average of a little more than 5 kg (in greenhouses up to 6 kg) of excellent marketable fruit is harvested from 1 m². The collected peppers are transported and stored for several days without loss of marketability.

Landing scheme

Due to the compactness of the bushes, 1 m² can accommodate up to 6 plants. The optimal planting pattern is 50x35 cm.

To get a large and tasty harvest of pepper, you need to take care of the seedlings in advance. When growing pepper seedlings, you need to correctly determine the sowing time, pre-sowing seed treatment, prepare the necessary container and soil.

Growing and care

Like many vegetable varietal crops developed in Siberia, this variety pleases with its unpretentiousness, good immunity and adaptability to different climatic conditions and temperature fluctuations. Not only in the south, but even in the central regions of Russia, it is successfully grown in the open field, but in greenhouses and greenhouses, the Golden Mane Lion consistently shows high productivity.

The seed material of this pepper can be prepared by yourself. In March, the seeds are sown in containers, after about 2 months, the seedlings are transferred to a plot or greenhouse bed. Pepper is a sun-loving plant, so a well-lit place is chosen.

The variety responds well to top dressing: throughout the growing season, the plant should alternate between mineral complexes and organic matter. Watering should be regular, but not excessive, and a layer of mulch will protect the soil from drying out.

Grasshopping and plant formation are not required. Despite the low growth of the bushes, the shoots may need a garter so that heavy overall fruits do not lie on the ground and do not pull branches down.

To harvest a tasty and rich harvest of pepper, you need to comply with all the conditions of agricultural technology, and proper care begins with planting plants. Before planting pepper in open ground, it should be prepared. It is also important to take care of the seedlings and planting space in advance.

One of the most important conditions for growing healthy and strong peppers is correct and timely watering, which is necessary for active growth, rapid rooting and good fruiting of plants in a greenhouse or open field. The soil under it should not dry out. This can be achieved by following the basic recommendations. First of all, you should be guided by the weather. In addition, the phase of development of the plants is important, as well as the way the peppers are grown - in a greenhouse or in the open field.
Although pepper has a tree-like stem structure, it still needs additional support. If the peppers are not tied up, the plants will begin to lean to the ground under the weight of ripening fruits, the stem may break. Low-growing varieties, as a rule, do not need a garter. But for tall and hybrid varieties, it is necessary.
Every summer resident who decides to grow pepper on his site must learn how to form it correctly. The formation of pepper is one of the simplest and most effective agricultural techniques that allow you to extend the term and increase the fruiting of a crop.

Soil requirements

When sowing seeds (in the southern regions) and planting seedlings of the Golden-Maned Lion, one of the most important conditions is a sufficiently high soil temperature: for seed germination, a soil temperature of about + 26ºC is required, and for young seedlings, values at night should not fall below + 14ºC. According to the composition and density of soils, pepper prefers medium loamy and sandy loam varieties. The looseness and porosity of the soil can be increased by adding peat, sand, ash.

For good growth of pepper bushes and active fruiting, you need to regularly apply mineral and organic fertilizing to the soil. It is necessary not only to choose the right formulations, but also to use them at the right stage in the development of culture. The frequency of top dressing is always individual. It depends directly on the composition of the land on your site. The poorer the soil composition, the more often you will need to feed the pepper.

Disease and pest resistance

This pepper shows a high resistance to major infections and pests affecting this vegetable crop.According to the reviews of amateur vegetable growers, subject to the norms of watering and basic rules of agricultural technology, the Golden-Maned Lion grows without problems and is very rarely sick.

Pepper is one of the most common vegetables in home gardens. This culture is quite stable and unpretentious. However, under certain conditions, this plant can suffer from infections and harmful insects. Before treating peppers for diseases or pests, you need to find out the cause of the problem, otherwise the treatment may be ineffective.
