Among the many peppery varieties that are grown in gardens, summer cottages, farms, there are several of the most beloved and demanded. These included the mid-season Tolstosum variety of Russian selection.

Breeding history

Sweet pepper Tolstosum is one of the best varieties of Siberian selection, bred by a group of Russian scientists. The main task was to create a vegetable crop that grows productively in conditions of cool summer and risky farming.

Description of the variety

Tolstosum is a mid-season variety. You can grow a vegetable in a garden ridge, under a film cover, in a greenhouse and a greenhouse. The culture is zoned in almost all climatic zones of Russia. Pepper is not listed in the State Register of Breeding Achievements of the Russian Federation, but its popularity is growing from year to year. Peppers are massively grown in the Central Region, as well as in the southern part of the country.

Characteristics of the appearance of plants and fruits

Tolstosum is a medium-sized plant of the standard type, which grows up to 60 cm in height. The pepper bush is characterized by compactness, medium spreading of branches, abundant thickening of dark green leaves, a mixed type of flowering and a powerful central stem.

A distinctive feature of the plant is the non-standard arrangement of fruits on the bushes: some of the peppers are in a drooping position, and some are with their noses up and to the side. On one bush, up to 15 large specimens are tied and matured.

The variety is large-fruited. Peppers grow aligned, endowed with a good presentation. The average weight of specimens is 150-200 grams. The shape of the vegetable is round-flattened. An unripe vegetable has a dark green color, and a fully ripe pepper is covered with a dark red cover. The vegetable belongs to thick-walled varieties (wall thickness is about 8-10 mm). The peel of the fruit is smooth, very shiny and slightly ribbed. The structure of the pepper consists of 3-4 chambers with an insignificant amount of small seeds.

The selected peppers are transportable, and can also lie in the refrigerator for up to 7-10 days without losing their taste and marketability. Unripe peppers can ripen at room temperature.

Purpose and taste

Pepper Tolstosum has a great taste and aroma. The flesh of the vegetable is fleshy, dense, crispy and juicy, without wateriness and off-flavor. The taste is dominated by pleasant sweetness with a pronounced sweet-tart aroma. A feature of the variety is the increased content of vitamin C in the pepper pulp.

One of the advantages of the variety is its universal purpose: peppers are eaten fresh, added to salads, pizza, hot dishes, and also baked, frozen and canned. Due to their meatiness and juiciness, the fruits can be processed into sauces and dressings.

Ripening terms

This variety is mid-season, but many growers consider it late. The growing season lasts 130-150 days. Peppers ripen slowly and for a long time, so the fruiting period is extended. You can count on the first crop in the greenhouse in the first half of July. The peak of fruiting outdoors occurs at the end of July or August. In the southern regions, vegetables ripen until late September - early October.

Yield

The yield indicator of the variety is excellent if you provide it with basic agricultural technology. On average, about 5 kg of juicy and crunchy specimens can be removed from 1 m2 of plantings.

Landing scheme

First of all, the vegetable must be planted correctly, observing the planting density and the distance between plantings, due to which access to light, air and heat is provided to each bush. You can plant 4-5 pepper bushes per 1 m2. The culture is planted according to the scheme 60x40 cm.

To get a large and tasty harvest of pepper, you need to take care of the seedlings in advance. When growing pepper seedlings, you need to correctly determine the sowing time, pre-sowing seed treatment, prepare the necessary container and soil.

Growing and care

Vegetables are grown through seedlings. Pepper bushes can be planted in a greenhouse in mid-May, and in garden beds - in the first week of June, when the air and soil are well warmed up, and return spring frosts are left behind. Strengthened bushes at the age of 70-80 days are used as planting material. Onions, carrots, pumpkin and squash are good predecessors for this crop.

Pepper care consists of basic activities: regular watering with warm water (at the root), fertilizing 3-4 times per season (preference is given to mineral complexes), loosening and weeding the soil, forming a bush in 2 stems, obligatory garter to pegs or trellises, prevention of viruses and bacteria. In greenhouses, ventilation must be carried out by controlling the humidity.

To harvest a tasty and rich harvest of pepper, you need to comply with all the conditions of agricultural technology, and proper care begins with planting plants. Before planting pepper in open ground, it should be prepared. It is also important to take care of the seedlings and planting space in advance.

One of the most important conditions for growing healthy and strong peppers is correct and timely watering, which is necessary for active growth, rapid rooting and good fruiting of plants in a greenhouse or open field. The soil under it should not dry out. This can be achieved by following the basic recommendations. First of all, you should be guided by the weather. In addition, the phase of development of the plants is important, as well as the way the peppers are grown - in a greenhouse or in the open field.
Although pepper has a tree-like stem structure, it still needs additional support. If the peppers are not tied up, the plants will begin to lean to the ground under the weight of ripening fruits, the stem may break. Low-growing varieties, as a rule, do not need a garter. But for tall and hybrid varieties, it is necessary.
Every summer resident who decides to grow pepper on his site must learn how to form it correctly. The formation of pepper is one of the simplest and most effective agricultural techniques that allow you to extend the term and increase the fruiting of a crop.

Soil requirements

The plant is suitable for loose, light, nutritious, breathable and moist soils with low acidity. It is best to plant peppers in black earth, sandy and loamy soils.

For good growth of pepper bushes and active fruiting, you need to regularly apply mineral and organic fertilizing to the soil. It is necessary not only to choose the right formulations, but also to use them at the right stage in the development of culture. The frequency of top dressing is always individual. It depends directly on the composition of the land on your site. The poorer the soil composition, the more often you will need to feed the pepper.

Required climatic conditions

Pepper Tolstosum is a heat-loving plant that needs constant light, sun, moisture and good air circulation. Due to its resistance to stress, pepper is resistant to temperature extremes. It is better for him to choose a sunnier place, protected from drafts.

Pepper is one of the most common vegetables in home gardens. This culture is quite stable and unpretentious. However, under certain conditions, this plant can suffer from infections and harmful insects. Before treating peppers for diseases or pests, you need to find out the cause of the problem, otherwise the treatment may be ineffective.
