Onion Vetraz is a popular variety, the advantages of which include high yield and early ripening. Growers also value culture for its strong immunity. It is worth considering in more detail the main characteristics of the variety and the method of its cultivation.

Breeding history

Breeders from Belarus were engaged in breeding Vetraz onions. The variety was obtained in 1994 and, after passing the tests, was successfully entered into the State Register.

Description of the variety

Vetraz belongs to a group of plants with an early maturity. Onions are valued for their strong immunity, as well as for the long-term preservation of the crop. The plant can boast of excellent keeping quality without loss of taste and marketability for up to 10 months inclusive. The ripeness of the variety is 89-95%, which is a very good indicator.

Characteristics of the appearance of plants and bulbs

Vetraz is a spicy, versatile variety grown in many regions of the country. The culture quickly gained popularity after being included in the State Register, and all thanks to its excellent characteristics. Among them:

  • the shape of the bulbs is round-flat;

  • average weight - 80-90 g;

  • dry matter content - up to 18.6%;

  • the color of dry scales is light brown;

  • the color of the base of the bulb is white.

On average, 1 onion contains 2-4 primordia.

Purpose and taste

Onion Vetraz has a pungent taste and is excellent both for fresh consumption and for use in soups, salads or main courses.

Maturation

Vetraz has an early ripening period. The bulbs are formed already after 95-100 days from the moment the seeds are planted in the ground.

Yield

The average yield reaches 6-7.5 kg per 1 m2. If desired, you can increase the yield, observing agrotechnical recommendations.

Growing and caring

Onions are grown mainly by seeds, but a seedling method of growing and planting through a set is also possible. Before embarking on planting work, seed preparation is carried out.

  1. Selection. First of all, the seeds are selected, leaving bulbs up to 1 cm in diameter. Additionally, the material is examined for deformations or cracks - such samples are removed.

  2. Drying. Within 1-2 days, the onions are dried in a warm place.

  3. Disinfection. After drying, the bulbs are placed in a saline solution for 3-5 minutes to strengthen the immune system.

And they also prepare the site. First of all, the soil is loosened before planting, and fertilizers are applied to the soil. Planting operations begin towards the end of April or the beginning of May, when the weather is warm and the risk of frost return will be minimal. The landing pattern is as follows.

  1. They dig up the beds, retreating between them up to 30 cm.

  2. Form holes up to 4 cm deep.

  3. Immerse the bulbs.

  4. Fall asleep with soil.

  5. Cover with mulch and water abundantly.

Next, you need to take care of the young onions. Basic moments.

  1. Watering. Onions are undemanding to watering; on average, it is recommended to add water to the soil 1-2 times a week, depending on climatic and weather conditions.

  2. Top dressing. During the season Vetraz is fertilized twice. The first time after sprouting with nitrophoska or urea. The second top dressing is applied towards the end of June, giving preference to nitrogen compositions. Additionally, gardeners recommend watering the plant with mineral solutions when the bulbs ripen.

  3. Loosening.An obligatory procedure that will accelerate the flow of nutrients to the roots and prevent plant diseases. It is recommended to loosen the garden bed after each watering.

And also it is worth taking care of the cleanliness of the beds. Weeds must be removed regularly to prevent the spread of pests and diseases. In addition, weeds take nutrients from the onion, which reduces the quantity and quality of the crop.

Since the onion is an unpretentious and cold-resistant plant, it can be planted both in spring and autumn. It is necessary to properly prepare the planting material, competently prepare the garden bed and determine the timing of planting.

To grow a large and tasty onion crop, you need to take good care of it from planting to harvesting. Watering is an important part of outdoor crop care. Thanks to timely watering, the onion will be able to grow normally, form a bulb, and grow greens.

Soil requirements

Onion Vetraz is unpretentious to growing conditions, but in order to obtain a bountiful harvest, you should take care of choosing a site. Recommendations:

  • preference should be given to sunny or slightly shaded places where there are no drafts;

  • the groundwater level must be low, otherwise a drainage system must be provided;

  • you can grow onions in the beds where nightshade, pumpkin or cruciferous crops previously grew.

Before planting - in the fall - the site should be carefully dug up and organic fertilizers applied.

The bow is not as unpretentious as it seems. For good growth, you need fertile soil, quality care and nutritious fertilizers. Without top dressing, the bulbs will grow small, and the greens will not be lush. At different stages, it should be fed with different substances. The vegetable needs organic and mineral feeding. A good result for fertilizing onions is the use of folk remedies.

Disease and pest resistance

Onion Vetraz is distinguished by strong immunity, but this does not mean that the plant is not capable of suffering from pests and diseases. With improper care or non-compliance with agrotechnical recommendations, the plant will quickly die. Preventive treatments with special formulations, as well as disinfection of seeds before planting, will help prevent this.

Despite the fact that the onion is a very useful plant, capable of repelling and killing many microbes and bacteria, it itself is often damaged and suffers from various misfortunes. Diseases and pests of onions can significantly reduce the yield. It is necessary to correctly determine the presence of this or that disease and take appropriate measures in time.

Review overview

Gardeners leave positive reviews about Vetraza. The advantages of the variety include high yield and resistance to most pests and diseases. Gardeners note that the Belarusian plant brings good-quality bulbs with excellent taste characteristics and quickly takes root in almost any soil.

To get a good harvest, you should not only properly care for it, but also harvest it at a certain time. You can remove the onion from the garden only after it is fully ripe. Collecting bulbs in the middle lane usually begins in August, closer to the middle of the month.
After harvesting the onion, it is important to preserve it as long as possible, without losing quality.For this, the raw materials must be properly prepared. You can store onions in different ways. It is important to observe a certain mode of temperature and humidity in the room.
