When choosing a variety of onions for cultivation in garden beds, many vegetable growers and farmers prefer Dutch varieties. This is due to the fact that they, as a rule, are not capricious in caring, they quickly adapt to the peculiarities of the climate, and are also very productive. Among the popular Dutch varieties is the Rossana onion.

Breeding history

Rossana is a representative of the Dutch selection, bred by a group of scientists ISI Sementi S. P. A. in 1998. The vegetable crop was entered into the register of approved crops in 2003. Onions are cultivated in the North Caucasus region. You can plant a vegetable both on small garden beds and on farmlands. Recently, onions have been massively grown in different climatic zones of the Russian Federation.

Description of the variety

The Rossan onion is a compact plant with a neat aerial part. Erect feathers are characterized by an unusual tubular shape, a uniform bright green cover, a barely noticeable waxy bloom, moderate thickening, as well as thin arrows that appear extremely rarely. In a favorable environment, greens grow to a height of 30-35 cm.

Characteristics of the appearance of plants and bulbs

The Dutch culture stands out among its relatives for its attractive presentation and accuracy of specimens. On average, the bulbs ripen with a mass of 50-70 grams. Sometimes individual specimens gain weight up to 140-150 grams. The diameter of the vegetable ranges from 8 cm. The shape of the bulbs can be oval, round or elongated-oblong. The density of the vegetable is increased. In structure, the onion belongs to the category of small-nesting, since it consists of one bulb. The skin of the fruit is smooth, thin, but firm, consisting of 3-4 tight-fitting scales, evenly colored dark red. The onion pulp has a beautiful and unusual color - pink.

The excavated specimens tolerate transportation well, and also have a long shelf life in a dark, dry and cool basement or cellar. At a temperature of + 15-20 degrees, the shelf life of vegetables is halved. During storage, the vegetable does not rot, does not lose density and retains its taste.

Purpose and taste

Rossan's onion is famous for its excellent taste. Light pink pulp is characterized by juiciness, tenderness, light crunch and meatiness. The taste is dominated by pronounced piquancy, light pungency, subtle sweetness and pleasant aroma. The vegetable has no stinginess. Onion pulp contains vitamins (C, PP, B), valuable mineral composition (potassium, magnesium, iron), antioxidants, anthocyanins, anti-cancer components.

The dug vegetables will certainly find wide application in cooking: onions are added to vegetable salads, in the first and second courses, they are pickled, used for conservation. In addition, this variety is ideally combined with meat, such as kebabs.

Maturation

Rossana is a mid-season variety. From mass emergence of seedlings to lodging of feathers, 112-125 days pass. Ripening of onions is slow. To speed it up, it is enough to bare the roots a little from the ground so that they dry out. You can start digging a vegetable when a third of the feathers are bent to the ground and dry. As a rule, this falls on the end of July or the beginning of August.

Yield

The variety is characterized by high productivity. With good care, from 1 m2 can be harvested from 3 to 5 kg of juicy onions. On an industrial scale, the indicators are also encouraging: from 1 hectare of plantings, you can dig up 186-282 centners of useful vegetables.

Planting dates with seeds, seedlings and seedlings

The best periods for planting Rossan onions are the end of April and mid-May. It is recommended to plant with sevk and seeds at a time when the air and soil are sufficiently warmed up. Typically, this is the first week of May.

Growing and care

Dutch onions can be grown through seedlings, as well as by planting seed or seeds in the garden. When sowing seeds, some subtleties should be taken into account: it is worth deepening the seed no more than 3-5 cm, while maintaining a distance of 8-10 cm.The distance between the grooves in the soil should be 20-25 cm. The seed is preliminarily disinfected in a weak solution potassium permanganate.

The seed method is acceptable for the southern regions, and planting with sevka is more suitable for the northern ones. The bulbs (sets) are calibrated and heated well before planting, which will prevent the formation of arrows. For planting, grooves are prepared with a depth of 3-5 cm. The distance between the turnips should be about 10 cm, and the row spacing should be 20-25 cm. You can get your own seeding by sowing onion seeds in the fall.

It is not recommended to plant Rossan onions for two years in a row on the same bed. Zucchini, cucumbers, tomatoes, and potatoes are considered good crop precursors. The agricultural technology of vegetable crops includes watering every 10 days (you need to stop watering the plants 3 weeks before harvesting), regular loosening and weeding, fertilizing twice a season (urea, bird droppings, nitrophoska solution), prevention of viruses and pest infestations. When watering, the soil should be soaked 10 cm deep.

Since the onion is an unpretentious and cold-resistant plant, it can be planted both in spring and autumn. It is necessary to properly prepare the planting material, competently prepare the garden bed and determine the timing of planting.

To grow a large and tasty onion crop, you need to take good care of it from planting to harvesting. Watering is an important part of outdoor crop care. Thanks to timely watering, the onion will be able to grow normally, form a bulb, and grow greens.

Soil requirements

There are no special requirements for the soil, but the culture is comfortable to grow in loose, fluffy, fertile soils that allow moisture and air to pass through well. It is important that the soil is not acidic and waterlogged. Onions should be planted on well-drained sandy loam soils.

The bow is not as unpretentious as it seems. For good growth, you need fertile soil, quality care and nutritious fertilizers. Without top dressing, the bulbs will grow small, and the greens will not be lush. At different stages, it should be fed with different substances. The vegetable needs organic and mineral feeding. A good result for fertilizing onions is the use of folk remedies.

Required climatic conditions

Dutch onion is a drought-resistant and heat-loving culture, therefore it is recommended to plant a vegetable in a sunny area, where it is constantly warm and light, and there is also a protective barrier against drafts. It should be borne in mind that the slightest cold snap, sharp temperature fluctuations can lead to the death of the plant. Experienced vegetable growers plant onions on a small hill.

Disease and pest resistance

The culture has a high immunity, so onions are resistant to many standard diseases. But if you do not follow the recommendations for care, onions can get sick with gray rot, jaundice, powdery mildew or downy mildew. Among the pests that most often attack onions, it is worth highlighting the onion fly and root mite. Planting pest-repellent carrots or aromatic plants nearby will be a good protection against onion flies.

Despite the fact that the onion is a very useful plant, capable of repelling and killing many microbes and bacteria, it itself is often damaged and suffers from various misfortunes. Diseases and pests of onions can significantly reduce the yield. It is necessary to correctly determine the presence of this or that disease and take appropriate measures in time.

To get a good harvest, you should not only properly care for it, but also harvest it at a certain time. You can remove the onion from the garden only after it is fully ripe. Collecting bulbs in the middle lane usually begins in August, closer to the middle of the month.
After harvesting the onion, it is important to preserve it as long as possible, without losing quality. For this, the raw materials must be properly prepared. You can store onions in different ways. It is important to observe a certain mode of temperature and humidity in the room.
