The Shetana MC onion variety is one of those that offers a high level of head ripeness, so even small farms use it. You can grow onions in an annual or biennial culture.

Breeding history

The Shetana MS variety appeared in the State Register of our country in 1998. This is a varietal plant, the seeds of which are today supplied for sale by many large organizations operating in the agro-industry.

Description of the variety

The ripeness level of Shetan MC onions is between 83 and 100% before harvest. Seed material today can be found in several forms:

  • sevok;

  • on tapes;

  • granules;

  • coated form.

Such a product undergoes special pre-sowing preparation, therefore it has a high germination rate. In addition, he has other advantages, he grows quickly, has good immunity to diseases.

Purchased seeds of this onion have good resistance to negative weather conditions, give a uniform crop, which is characterized by high taste.

The Shetana MC variety does not require much maintenance, its heads retain their presentation for a long time and can be stored in the warehouse for a long time. This onion also withstands long-distance transportation.

There are few disadvantages of this variety. Shetana MC does not have the necessary immunity to downy mildew, therefore, it requires timely treatment for this disease.

Characteristics of the appearance of plants and bulbs

The Shetan MC bulbs are medium in size and round in shape and can grow up to 46 grams when sown with seeds. When sevok is used, the head size increases to 88 grams.

The color of the dry shell of the bulbs is straw-colored, the juicy scales are white. The density of Shetana MC is medium.

Purpose and taste

The taste of Shetana MC can be assessed as semi-sharp. The onion of this variety has universal use, it is grown both on the feather and on the head.

Maturation

This variety is in the medium early category. From sowing the seeds to collecting the head, it takes from 90 to 100 days. When grown on a feather, from the moment of sowing the seed to obtaining a large green mass, 64-87 days pass, depending on the region of planting and climatic features, if grown from seeds, then 88-98 days pass.

Yield

Shetana MC shows a high yield, which depends on the region of onion planting. In the Middle Volga region, this figure is about 259-290 c / ha, if Shetana MS is grown in a two-year culture. In Central, due to climatic conditions, this level is reduced to 50-58 centners / ha.

Growing regions

It is grown mainly in the Middle Volga and Central regions, but it is also suitable for other regions of Russia.

Planting dates with seeds, seedlings and seedlings

If you grow Shetan MC onions through seedlings, then sowing seeds on it is done in March, young plants can be transferred to the ground in May.

Growing and care

To plant Shetan MC onions, you need to find a sunny place. The scheme used is 5-7x10-15 cm.

Shetana MC seeds germinate at a temperature of 4-5 degrees.With an increase in it to 10-15 degrees, shoots appear on the soil surface in 12-17 days. Bulbs of this variety, during vegetative propagation (sets), germinate at a temperature of 1-2 degrees for 10-12 days.

The optimum temperature for the growth of Shetana MC is 17-22 degrees, and the maximum temperature is 33 degrees. In warm weather, the aboveground part of this variety develops faster than the root part, while in cool weather - vice versa. In this regard, the seeds of the Shetana MC should be sown as early as possible. This provides a longer period with lower temperatures for root formation, intensive leaf growth and high bulb yield.

Onions of Shetan MC can proceed to generative development only when enough nutrients have accumulated in it. Therefore, only in cold and long protracted springs, individual specimens of the first year can switch to shooting.

Onions of Shetan MC refers to plants that need 15-16 hours of sunshine per day. Only under these conditions, this variety grows well, forms large bulbs that ripen and store well. With vegetative propagation, the Shetana MC variety's demands on the intensity of illumination are somewhat reduced in the initial phase of growth, since during this period the leaves grow due to the nutrients of the bulb.

A decrease in the length of the day, as well as a decrease in temperature, slows down the processes of head formation, therefore, when sowing Shetana MC seeds in summer, the green mass continues to grow until late autumn, without forming bulbs.

Moisture requirements for Shetana MC vary with the growing season. So, for seed germination, soil moisture should be 85-90%. This is due to the fact that the seeds of this variety have a hard shell impregnated with essential oil, through which water is poorly absorbed. Therefore, the seed material germinates together in early spring, when there are sufficient moisture reserves in the soil.

If the sowing is delayed even by 3-5 days, the topsoil (2-3 cm) dries up quickly, as a result of which the field germination of Shetana MC decreases, the seedlings are delayed and, as a rule, are rarefied. In the future, onions of this variety also grows well with an optimum soil moisture in the range of 70-85% and a relative humidity of 60-70%. At higher relative humidity, they are affected by downy mildew. To ensure an optimal indicator in the southern regions of our country, crops are watered 2-7 times a month, depending on weather conditions.

With insufficient moisture during the period of intensive growth of the Shetan MC onion, its growth slows down and even stops. Plants quickly form small bulbs, the root system dies off, the false stem softens, and the leaves lie down, which is typical when growing seedlings of this variety.

Since the onion is an unpretentious and cold-resistant plant, it can be planted both in spring and autumn. It is necessary to properly prepare the planting material, competently prepare the garden bed and determine the timing of planting.

To grow a large and tasty onion crop, you need to take good care of it from planting to harvesting. Watering is an important part of outdoor crop care. Thanks to timely watering, the onion will be able to grow normally, form a bulb, and grow greens.

Soil requirements

The Shetana MC variety is picky about soil fertility. For 10 tons of harvest, this onion takes out from the soil an average of 40.2 kg of nitrogen, 11.6 - phosphorus and 21.0 kg of potassium.When growing seedlings, respectively - 53.7 kg of nitrogen, 16.0 - phosphorus and 40 kg of potassium. Therefore, the crops of the Shetan MC onion should be placed on highly fertile, loose, rich in organic matter, weed-free soils. Heavy, waterlogged and acidic soils are unsuitable for its cultivation.

Nutrients on Shetana MC onions are not assimilated in the same way during the growing season. Nitrogen is used intensively during the period of foliage growth. During the period of bulb formation, the need for nitrogen is somewhat reduced, and its excess, especially with a deficiency of potassium, promotes further growth of leaves and delays the maturation of the bulbs. Therefore, the need for phosphorus and potassium increases during the formation and ripening of bulbs. At the beginning of the growing season of Shetan, MC reacts negatively to a high concentration of mineral fertilizers.

The bow is not as unpretentious as it seems. For good growth, you need fertile soil, quality care and nutritious fertilizers. Without top dressing, the bulbs will grow small, and the greens will not be lush. At different stages, it should be fed with different substances. The vegetable needs organic and mineral feeding. A good result for fertilizing onions is the use of folk remedies.

Required climatic conditions

This variety does not have the required frost resistance.

Disease and pest resistance

Shetana MC demonstrates genetically good immunity to fusarium and bacterial rot. However, it is easily attacked by downy mildew. If processing is not carried out in time, you can lose most of the crop, since it is impossible to notice the disease in the early stages.

In this case, in order to protect the crop, it is required to purchase seed material prepared in a special way and carry out preventive treatment several times a season with proven fungicides.

Despite the fact that the onion is a very useful plant, capable of repelling and killing many microbes and bacteria, it itself is often damaged and suffers from various misfortunes. Diseases and pests of onions can significantly reduce the yield. It is necessary to correctly determine the presence of this or that disease and take appropriate measures in time.

To get a good harvest, you should not only properly care for it, but also harvest it at a certain time. You can remove the onion from the garden only after it is fully ripe. Collecting bulbs in the middle lane usually begins in August, closer to the middle of the month.
After harvesting the onion, it is important to preserve it as long as possible, without losing quality. For this, the raw materials must be properly prepared. You can store onions in different ways. It is important to observe a certain mode of temperature and humidity in the room.
