The variety was bred by scientists from the Netherlands. In our country, onions of this variety have been sown since 2009. Onion Sturon is characterized by succulent bulbs, but is also suitable for growing on feathers.

Description of the variety

One of the advantages of the described variety is that it adapts perfectly to any type of soil and climate. Sturon is cultivated not only on the territory of our country, but also in Ukraine and Belarus. It can be grown on a personal plot and on an industrial scale. Cleaning by mechanized means is possible.

Planting material is produced by large agricultural organizations in Russia. Seeds can be found in several forms:

  • pelleted;
  • on tapes;
  • granular.

The packaging may differ, usually the packaging weighs from 500 grams.

To get a good harvest of Sturon every time, you need to purchase new seeds every year. Dutch manufacturers offer better quality material, but at a higher price. Its distinctive feature is good germination. The resistance of young plants to changes in weather conditions and good immunity to diseases typical of onions are additional bonuses.

You can increase the productivity of plantings if you approach the selection of a site correctly. If you thicken the Sturon landings too much, then the heads at the exit will turn out to be smaller.

Characteristics of the appearance of plants and bulbs

The bulbs of this variety have a transverse elliptical shape. They can be large or medium, weighing about 80-100 grams. The husk is yellow, with a brown tint. The juicy plates of Sturon onions are white, with a slight shade of green. They are quite dense.

This onion tastes spicy and can be stored for up to 8 months under optimal conditions. Lies well in the warehouse and practically does not germinate.

Growing and care

Sturon experts recommend growing from seedlings in the spring. But if you carry out the procedure before winter, then you can save time and get a harvest faster. The right time is mid and late autumn. If planting is done in spring, it is usually April or May, when the air temperature is already above 10 degrees during the day. The first to be immersed in the soil is the smaller seed, after a while the large bulbs are sown. Seedlings can be expected in a week or two.

With Sturon, no one canceled the rules of crop rotation. It is best to plant it where it previously grew:

  • cabbage;
  • potato;
  • tomatoes.

Sturon feels good about dill.You can plant it where the beans grew, because after the legumes, the soil is rich in nutrients. You cannot plant it after carrots, cucumbers and garlic. Spores of pathogenic fungal diseases in the ground cause disease in onions. Sturon's landing method is in two lines. A distance of 70 centimeters is left between the beds. Sturon's seeds are immersed in the ground 2-3 cm, then sprinkled with a layer of mulch. If onions are grown for seedlings, you can cover the containers with foil until the first shoots appear. The containers are removed on a sunny windowsill.

When growing Sturon onions, soil moisture is very important. In summer and spring, he needs to provide high-quality watering. After the first seedlings appear in the open field, they are watered abundantly in order to accelerate the growth of the green mass. At the same time, there is no question of any stagnation of water, otherwise the Sturon heads will simply rot. Every three days, ten liters of fluid are used per square meter of planting. During an enlargement of the head, the frequency of hydration is reduced. Moderate watering is required to get a good harvest of feathers.

Regularly you will need to loosen the soil around the onion in the beds, remove weeds. After watering, remove the top crust on the ground using a special tool to improve oxygen access.

Like any plant, Sturon requires fertilization. Soil fertility is important for the growth of green mass. The variety should be planted in soil well fertilized with organic and mineral means. The first feeding is carried out in liquid form at the root. Use mullein in a ratio of 1: 8 or bird droppings (1: 20). Then it is worth excluding fertilizers containing nitrogen. In the second growing season (during the ripening of the head), nutrient complexes with potassium and phosphorus are introduced.

Since the onion is an unpretentious and cold-resistant plant, it can be planted both in spring and autumn. It is necessary to properly prepare the planting material, competently prepare the garden bed and determine the timing of planting.

To grow a large and tasty onion crop, you need to take good care of it from planting to harvesting. Watering is an important part of outdoor crop care. Thanks to timely watering, the onion will be able to grow normally, form a bulb, and grow greens.

Soil requirements

Loam or sandy loam are suitable for planting Sturon.

The bow is not as unpretentious as it seems. For good growth, you need fertile soil, quality care and nutritious fertilizers. Without top dressing, the bulbs will grow small, and the greens will not be lush. At different stages, it should be fed with different substances. The vegetable needs organic and mineral feeding. A good result for fertilizing onions is the use of folk remedies.

Required climatic conditions

Sturon has a high frost resistance. Even the most severe winter, seeds in the ground tolerate well, without harming the future harvest.

Disease and pest resistance

This variety is poorly resistant to peronospora, so it is worth spraying Sturon with Fitoverm in time. Diseased plants are removed immediately.

Sometimes flies and other insects appear on the onion, although it is characterized by a high degree of resistance to them. Insects and their larvae feed on plant sap and gnaw on leaves. The easiest way to get rid of the problem is to treat the young plantings of Sturon with a mustard solution (one tablespoon per 10 liters of water). Industrial insecticides have also proven themselves well.

Despite the fact that the onion is a very useful plant, capable of repelling and killing many microbes and bacteria, it itself is often damaged and suffers from various misfortunes. Diseases and pests of onions can significantly reduce the yield. It is necessary to correctly determine the presence of this or that disease and take appropriate measures in time.

To get a good harvest, you should not only properly care for it, but also harvest it at a certain time. You can remove the onion from the garden only after it is fully ripe. Collecting bulbs in the middle lane usually begins in August, closer to the middle of the month.
After harvesting the onion, it is important to preserve it as long as possible, without losing quality. For this, the raw materials must be properly prepared. You can store onions in different ways. It is important to observe a certain mode of temperature and humidity in the room.
