Onions are grown in almost every garden ridge, but often its cultivation is fraught with different difficulties, so most farmers and vegetable growers try to choose non-capricious varieties that give bountiful harvests. These are the mid-season onions of Globo of Czech selection.

Breeding history

Globo onions are the result of many years of work by Czech breeders of the Semo agricultural company. Despite the fact that the variety is absent in the State Register of the Russian Federation, its popularity is growing every year. The vegetable is cultivated in different climatic zones - from the Central region to the Urals, Siberia and the Far East. Onions are grown mainly in open ground.

Description of the variety

The giant onion Globo is a compact plant with an erect rosette. Feathers are characterized by a bright green color, a noticeable gloss of the surface, and the density of the walls. In a favorable environment, the rosette grows up to 50-55 cm in height. The rosette is well thickened. Shooting is rarely observed during the growing season.

Characteristics of the appearance of plants and bulbs

Globo onion grows beautiful, aligned, with an attractive presentation. The vegetable belongs to large-fruited varieties. The average weight of a ripe vegetable reaches 700-1000 grams. Some specimens grow up to 1.1-1.2 kg. The shape of the bulb is broadly oval or elliptical, slightly elongated. The surface of the bulb is smooth, shiny, dense, consisting of 4 scales, tightly attached to the vegetable. The color of the vegetable is uniform - light brown or brown-golden. The onion pulp is snow-white, quite dense. The structure of the bulbs is small, consisting of a minimum number of bulbs.

The harvested crop lends itself to transportation over different distances, and can also be stored for some time. If the vegetables are well dried for 7-10 days, sorted out, stored in wooden boxes or wicker baskets, then keeping quality may last a little, and, without decay, reducing the density of the bulbs.

Purpose and taste

Globo is famous for its excellent taste. The snow-white pulp is very fleshy, tender, juicy, crunchy. There is absolutely no bitterness and pungency in the taste, and there is also no pronounced classic aroma characteristic of most onion varieties. Summer sweetness dominates the taste. It is worth noting the useful composition of onion pulp, in which the increased content of vitamins of group C, PP, B, E, as well as essential oils, pectins, organic acids, phytoncides, saponins, macro / microelements (potassium, phosphorus, iron, iodine).

Dug up onions belong to the class of salad, therefore they are massively eaten fresh - they are added to various salads, meat dishes, pickled, and used for canning vegetables. This variety is ideal for barbecuing.

Maturation

The variety is mid-ripening, but many vegetable growers attribute it to a late-ripening culture. From the moment of germination to absolute ripening of the bulbs on the ridges, 135-140 days pass. Vegetables are ripened very slowly.Onions can be harvested from the second half of August to the end of September. The first sign of the complete maturity of the bulbs is the yellowed feathers that have fallen to the ground.

Yield

This onion species is quite productive. If you provide the culture with basic care, you can get an excellent harvest - up to 10-12 kg of marketable bulbs from 1 m2.

Planting dates with seeds, seedlings and seedlings

Planting times in each region may be slightly different, since it all depends on the climatic characteristics. Sowing seeds for seedlings can be done in March. And to transfer it to the garden bed - in the first half of May. Sowing seeds in open ground is recommended after April 20. Sevkom planting is carried out in early May, sometimes in the middle of the month.

Growing and care

The vegetable is grown by seed, seedling methods, as well as sevka. In regions with short and cool summers, the seedling method is usually used to grow large and succulent bulbs. Seeds for seedlings are pre-sorted, disinfected, treated with a growth stimulator, and dried. As soon as the bushes grow and get stronger, they are transferred to the beds, planting according to the scheme 7-9 x 20-25 cm.

When planting a vegetable with sevka, you should also adhere to some rules: sort the bulbs, using only healthy, undamaged specimens, prepare grooves 1-2 cm deep, where the bulbs are buried. Landing is carried out according to the scheme 30x25 cm.

When planting onions, it is important to follow the rules of crop rotation. Good vegetable garden precursors are: cabbage, eggplant, potatoes, pumpkin, and tomatoes.

Onion care includes: watering as the soil dries up, fertilizing twice a season (fed during the period of active growth of feathers), loosening and weeding row spacings, preventing diseases and insect infestations. In addition, light mulching using sawdust, straw, pine needles is recommended. A layer of mulch will keep moisture in the soil longer.

Since the onion is an unpretentious and cold-resistant plant, it can be planted both in spring and autumn. It is necessary to properly prepare the planting material, competently prepare the garden bed and determine the timing of planting.

To grow a large and tasty onion crop, you need to take good care of it from planting to harvesting. Watering is an important part of outdoor crop care. Thanks to timely watering, the onion will be able to grow normally, form a bulb, and grow greens.

Soil requirements

Onions grow comfortably in light, well-drained, fertile, moist and breathable soils with neutral acidity. Nutritious sandstones are optimal.

The bow is not as unpretentious as it seems. For good growth, you need fertile soil, quality care and nutritious fertilizers. Without top dressing, the bulbs will grow small, and the greens will not be lush. At different stages, it should be fed with different substances. The vegetable needs organic and mineral feeding. A good result for fertilizing onions is the use of folk remedies.

Required climatic conditions

Globo onion is a cold-resistant crop, easily tolerates short droughts and temperature fluctuations. Planting is planned in cleared, leveled and sunny areas, protected from the cold wind.

Disease and pest resistance

Strong immunity protects the culture from standard diseases (downy mildew, fusarium, rot). Among the pests that attack the plant, one can distinguish moth, onion fly, thrips.

Despite the fact that the onion is a very useful plant, capable of repelling and killing many microbes and bacteria, it itself is often damaged and suffers from various misfortunes. Diseases and pests of onions can significantly reduce the yield. It is necessary to correctly determine the presence of this or that disease and take appropriate measures in time.

To get a good harvest, you should not only properly care for it, but also harvest it at a certain time. You can remove the onion from the garden only after it is fully ripe. Collecting bulbs in the middle lane usually begins in August, closer to the middle of the month.
After harvesting the onion, it is important to preserve it as long as possible, without losing quality. For this, the raw materials must be properly prepared. You can store onions in different ways. It is important to observe a certain mode of temperature and humidity in the room.
