Small kitchens with an area of 5 sq. m are found in houses built according to projects of the 40-60s of the last century, when the country was in dire need of housing. And in order to resettle as many and as quickly as possible Soviet families, they built small-sized housing, which still exists in the countries of the former USSR. But the same problem also existed in Europe, in the disadvantaged regions of the United States, and there is no need to talk about Asia, where land is a luxury.

Take a tape measure and measure 1 m wide and 5 m long or 2 m wide and 2.5 m long. This is 5 square meters. As you can imagine, the area is very small. And on these squares you need to fit a kitchen for one or more family members. It is very important here to rationally use every centimeter to install the necessary furniture and equipment. And at the same time, make sure that the kitchen is beautiful, cozy and comfortable. The creation of such an interior is not easy. But we will try to help the owners of a small kitchen choose the layout, furniture and design options.

Layout

Let's think what the kitchen usually contains without fail, as well as in the options "desirable" and "according to the situation":

  • necessarily - a stove (with an oven or just a hob), a sink, a work surface for cooking, cabinets or shelves, a refrigerator, a dining table;
  • preferably a microwave oven, washing machine, extractor hood, dishwasher, food processor;
  • according to the situation - gas water heater, gas boiler.

So, starting a renovation, you need to think about whether everything you need must be in the kitchen. Maybe you can take the refrigerator out into the corridor or, in general, combine the corridor with the kitchen. Let's think about whether it is necessary to install a washing machine in the kitchenette or buy a large kitchen set. After careful analysis of the space, the necessary furniture and equipment, the possibilities of redevelopment of the premises, cash costs you should get a project that will suit everyone.

So, the layout may include kitchen project exactly at five meters. Or redevelopment of adjacent walls and premises... The second option is much more complicated, associated with obtaining permission to redevelop an apartment in an apartment building, even if it is an arched opening.

It is easier for residents of the private sector in this matter, the main thing is not to forget that there are load-bearing and non-load-bearing walls.

But if you nevertheless decided on redevelopment, then this will definitely pay off with future convenience for the whole family:

  • you can, in general, demolish the wall between the kitchen and the adjacent room, carve out a few centimeters or even more by thoughtful zoning;
  • by demolishing the wall, place the refrigerator in the former doorway;
  • you can replace a brick or concrete wall with a glass partition with a sliding door - the partition is much thinner, additional light will pass through it, due to transparency, the space will visually increase, the sliding door will save space and protect the house from kitchen odors;
  • instead of a regular door, make a semi-arch with a dining table or additional shelves;
  • combine the kitchen and the balcony, having previously thoroughly insulated it.

Peculiarities

If such a repair is not possible, then you should plan how best to equip your kitchen on 5 square meters. This layout has its own characteristics.

  • First, conduct an audit and get rid of things that you rarely use or don't use at all. Remove for now things that do not have a utilitarian function. When the renovation is over, see if you need chicken for a kettle, a hand mixer, large quantities of mayonnaise buckets, old dishes.

Get rid of bulky furniture. Consider the possibility of expanding a sill, possibly a complex shape. This is an additional shelf, work surface or dining table.

  • Make an extra shelf to the width of the window.
  • There is an additional niche with doors under the kitchen window in the Khrushchevs. The doors can be refined for a kitchen set or a plastic door, and inside a full-fledged wardrobe with shelves. Some owners, on the contrary, remove the doors and make a dining table from an extended window sill. Ideas for installing techniques there are questionable among home designers.
  • Refuse, in general, from the windowsill, and in its place, install a sink or mini-refrigerator.
  • Order three-tier wardrobes, let them be narrower - due to vertical placement, there will be more space. Make the wall cabinets a little wider and the floor cabinets narrower.
  • It is recommended to choose a built-in technique., narrower - so the kitchen will not look overloaded with a large number of items: a refrigerator, a gas water heater will hide behind the front doors of the kitchen set.

It is advisable to choose equipment that performs several functions at the same time: a multicooker with a bread maker, a combine with a juicer and a meat grinder, an oven with a microwave.

  • It is important to use practical fittingsso as not to touch the handles every second.
  • Provide in base cabinets not the usual shelves, but swivel or pull-out.
  • Sliding and hinged doors furniture will save space compared to swing ones.
  • Folding table or transformer will significantly add space to a small kitchen.
  • Stools, instead of chairs - an easy way to save space.
  • Use furniture with radius corners: they will save from bruises, especially children, and make the kitchen more beautiful.
  • If the family is big, then it makes sense transfer the dining area to the hall, living room.

Important! If you are planning a major renovation in an old apartment, think immediately about replacing communications: the old heating and sewage systems can fail simply because their deadline has come, and the electrical wiring in Soviet houses is not designed for such a number of items that we are already accustomed to.

Furniture

Before buying a new kitchen unit, you need to solve a fundamental question: whether to buy ready-made furniture or make to order. You don't have to wait long for the finished furniture, but you will have to measure it out very carefully, not forgetting about the baseboards and batteries. Custom-made furniture with professional measurements can be a much more profitable option, as the measurers can prompt and pay attention to the nuances that you considered unimportant.

Depending on whether the kitchen is long or square, where the window and door are located, the room can be furnished with single-row or double-row furniture. The kitchen set can be straight, L-shaped, U-shaped.

    • The simplest arrangement is single-row arrangement of furniture and appliances. This option can be in a long kitchen: it is easy to move around here, opening cabinets do not interfere with each other. A narrow or folding table is placed against the opposite wall if the kitchen has a dining area.

    If the refrigerator is also in this row, then you need to pick up a narrow 2-3-burner stove so that the headset looks like a whole. To comply with basic safety rules, the refrigerator is not placed next to the stove, and the sink is next to the hob.

    • Furniture and appliances in two rows placed in a square kitchen on opposite sides. It is logical to arrange the hob and work surface along one wall, as well as the sink.On the second - a refrigerator, floor and wall cabinets or a washing machine and open shelves.

    The third wall may have a dining area and a window. If the kitchen is 2 m wide, and the minimum distance between the facades should be 1.2 m, then the width of the floor pedestals should be no more than 45 cm on each side.

    • L-shaped or corner set is located along the adjacent walls, leaving the other two for the table, doors, windows. If the sink is located on a wall, then the furniture is made rectangular, but if the sink is installed in a corner, then the lower cabinet is usually made beveled or with an accordion door. Modern models look more aesthetically pleasing, with a complex wave-like shape. Each option has its own pros and cons.

    It is important to correctly arrange not only furniture, but also equipment: the refrigerator should not stand next to the stove or gas water heater; in the corner sink, located next to the stove, it is inconvenient for the hostess to work.

    • Beveled corner will take up such a precious space, but you can hide a lot inside the cabinet. But it is also not very convenient to get out of there - you need to install rotary shelves. It is also important to choose the right doors so that they do not interfere with each other when opening different sections.

    • U-shaped furniture Is an even placement on three adjacent walls. Cannot be installed in a narrow long kitchen. A symmetrical layout can be used if the dining area is moved to another room.

    In other cases, placing both a working and a dining area on 5 squares will be problematic. It is advisable to place cabinets-cases along the edges of the headset, demonstrating the boundaries of the working area.

    The center can be a window, and under it - a beautiful sink made of artificial stone: the light falling from the window will block the view of the sink. The U-shaped layout is considered the most convenient, since everything is at hand here. The main thing is to have a place to turn around: the distance between the cabinets should be at least 90 cm.

    Whatever furniture you choose, it should be highly functional, ergonomic, the facade is combined with technology. If one or two people live in an apartment, then, instead of closed cabinets, you can use open shelves: it looks very nice, but the order should be perfect.

    Finishes and colors

    Competent finishing of the floor, walls and ceiling will help to visually increase the size of the kitchen. For this it is important to use the “right” materials and colors. In addition, when choosing a color scheme consider the height of the ceiling and the side of the light: High ceilings need more light as well as north-facing rooms.

    And also do not hesitate to look different from your neighbors and relatives: it may turn out that it is your design that needs inexpensive wallpaper on the walls, whitewash on the ceiling and a self-woven runner on the floor.

    Ceiling

    Low ceilings in "Khrushchevs" and high ceilings in "Stalinkas" impose certain rules for finishing the ceiling.

    • To visually raise the ceiling, you can use reflective surfaces (stretch or suspended ceiling in light or mirror shades), light moisture-resistant wallpaper, PVC panels, pastel whitewash, smooth or curly multi-tiered plasterboard.
    • To visually lower the ceiling, use matte surfaces in darker shades. But it is not recommended to use completely dark colors - they will psychologically crush. You can paste over the ceiling and the upper quarter of the walls with the same, but non-variegated wallpaper.

    They also use wooden or PVC slats, lining. A suspended ceiling can significantly bring the ceiling closer to the floor, not visually, but in reality.

    Walls

    With such an area, there will be a minimum of free walls, but they also need finishing. There is a great variety of materials for this: from 15 types of wallpaper to mirrors. But the main thing here is to follow the principles of finishing so that the kitchen is comfortable, practical, bright and beautiful.

    • The more cabinets, the fewer wallpaper patterns.Small faded drawings are the maximum, otherwise the kitchen will be overloaded.
    • If I want to make the kitchen brighter, then you can use one brighter wall, for example, above the dining area.
    • A bright spot maybe a kitchen apron. To do this, use photo wallpaper or photo printing on plastic, MDF, fiberboard. The same role can be played by mosaics or tiles.
    • For visual expansion spaces use mirrored surfaces: on an apron, on a free wall, on the facade of furniture. But such a cladding is not easy to care for.
    • They will also increase the spacesglossy surfaces on furniture or walls.
    • Photo wallpaper 3D with a view of the sea, the beach, the road stretching into the distance, a hill of streets with paving stones and kerosene lanterns will create the prospect of moving forward, the walls of the kitchen will be "pushed apart".
    • Designers offer use different textures and colors for different walls, then the walls will move away from each other.

    Floor

      For the kitchen floor, choose a tile, high-quality linoleum, moisture-repellent laminate, a type-setting strip or boards made of natural wood. There are a few rules here too.

      • To expand the space ceramic tiles should be laid diagonally.
      • The same must be done with laminate or parquet board.
      • In a narrow kitchen, except for the diagonal, transverse laying of the material is allowed.
      • To linoleum with a large pattern it is difficult to find wallpaper and furniture. It is better to choose a coating that imitates crumb, gasoline stains. The floor should not be very colorful.
      • Dark floors and light furniture makes the kitchen more light, soaring.

      Colors

      You will read on any website that light colors will increase the size of the room. And it is true. All shades of pastel colors will help make the kitchen visually larger. In north-facing kitchens, it is best to use warm yellows, beige, brown, sand tones.

      In the southern rooms, to create coolness, they use olive, lilac, blue, turquoise, metallic, aqua.

      But explosive colors are gaining more and more popularity: deep green, pink, blue-orange, black, bright yellow, blue-gray-green... Whether you choose fashion trends or cozy beauty, it's up to you. But the kitchen is where family members spend a lot of time. She should be relaxing, no aggression. Therefore, if you use bright colors, then only as an element of decor.

      It is not recommended to use more than three colors in one room in the design of surfaces. Moreover, floor cabinets are advised to be made 2-3 tones darker than hinged ones.

      Always considered the ideal color white or a combination of white and black. A pure white small kitchen is a feat of sorts if there are small children in the house. If the hostess is able to maintain the sterile cleanliness of the facade, then why not.

      Decor and lighting

      It seems that in a small kitchen there is no place for decorative elements, but this is not so. It's just important to choose not just beautiful items, but also the right ones.

      • Mittensmade in the same style as the towel.
      • On apron and monochrome facades You can glue the purchased stickers or cut them yourself from the self-adhesive film.
      • On open wall and floor shelves place bright everyday dishes, beautiful transparent jars of spices, bottles of sauces.
      • On the windowsill there is a place for fresh flowers. If not, hang the planter over the window.
      • Over the table there is a place for clocks, children's drawings, paintings, photographs of family members, applications, panels made of dough.
      • Decor element there may be curtains or blinds. After all, this is not necessarily a plain canvas. A photo plot will make such a decor a real decoration. At the same time, do not forget - no one said that the curtains must necessarily be long. They can be any: straight along the window sill, covering only the upper third of the window, semicircular, oblique, complex cut.

      Fortunately, you don't have to buy decor items. And this will significantly save your budget.But it is imperative to include imagination.

        The same goes for lighting. If it natural, then the penetration of light should not interfere with curtains, pots, blinds. For artificial - it is important that it is above the sink and the work surface, the dining area. In this case, the sink should have a fairly bright light, but above the table it will be more comfortable with incandescent lamps.

        In a small kitchen it is difficult to imagine a large chandelier with "hanging", but maybe you will be able to break the canons. When installing a plasterboard or stretch ceiling, make spot lighting. Explain to the masters that beauty is not the main thing. The main thing is uniform lighting of the kitchen.

        When using familiar chandeliers, use matte lampshades, which you can do with your own hands. Above the table, you can hang a sconce or a lamp on a tripod.

        A good solution would be installation of spotlights in the frame of furniture facades: it is beautiful and practical. An interesting option is night illumination kitchen corner. It does not irritate the eyes, it can serve as a decor for a romantic dinner.

        Design options

        Solid three-tier cabinets and open shelves, instead of them, the design of arched openings for the dining area and an increase in the kitchen due to the corridor, the use of rotary mechanisms in the cabinets and the expansion of window sills - we offered many ideas for arranging a 5-meter kitchen. Now let's think about how to implement them. Knowledge of the basics of styles will help in this. There can be a huge number of style decisions. Let's dwell on only a few.

        Loft

        Despite the fact that a loft is a large space, the elements of style can be applied to a small kitchen as well. Here no bulky wall cabinets needed, some of the furniture can be made by hand. The walls, curtains and even the battery are finished in brown. Simple and affordable.

        Scandinavian

        All shades of white use of unpainted wood, self-woven paths, simple fixtures - these are the signs of the Scandinavian style. It is suitable for those whose kitchen is an attribute of an apartment, and not a place of permanent residence for family members. The kitchen turns out to be calm, Nordic.

        Modern

        The kitchen can turn out to be completely different depending on the wishes of the customer: bright, multi-colored, calm, monochromatic. But here no place for rustic rugs and hanging bunches of grass... It is quite possible to use plastic furniture for the dining area.

        High tech

              This style is most often presented as a strict version. using items on a metal base... And this is, indeed, so - high-tech loves metallic color, chrome legs, gray walls. But this particular design project is very interesting. All conditions are met, but use of radius shapes, transparent plexiglass, and, most importantly, a few items of bright light green color turned the small kitchen into a style icon.
