There is no exact data on who invented the shell chair. It is believed that for the first time this kind of furniture was made in the Branca-Lisboa design studio. According to one version, the author of the creative idea was Marco Sousa Santos. The armchair of his work is made of plywood. Soft views with a rounded back were made already in the days of the King of the Sun. Then they were called "bergeres".

This type of furniture is of two types: frame and upholstered. Armchairs on a metal frame are made of light-alloy hollow tubes, on which a cover made of waterproof fabric with a light filling is put on - most often with padding polyester. These chairs are comfortable when hiking. Due to their low weight, folding mechanism, they fit into the trunk of a car without any problems. This is the most budgetary option, such a seat can be bought in garden, tourist hypermarkets.

A plywood shell is an expensive pleasure. It is impossible to see her in an ordinary store. They are not in mass production, apparently due to the lack of demand and the complexity of production. Open bent edges give the product a vintage look. They say that it is pleasant and useful to sit on such an air chair. For comfort, soft mattresses are placed on them.

Now ottoman-shells are mass-produced. The advantages of such samples are not only in the fashionable design. Due to the small rounded back, they are more comfortable than classic ottomans.

Large shells covered with velvet and velor are rather an element of theater studios, foyers, and concert halls.

Rounded backs can be smooth or resemble a sea pearl shell. In this case, they are made of several parts glued together around the seat. The rounded top of each part, in combination with the neighboring ones, gives the product the shape of a shell. Due to the low demand in small wholesale stores, such furniture is not on sale. In large furniture centers, you can see round chairs with leather upholstery, woven rattan, with thick soft mattresses. They look beautiful and stylish. Their price tag is high, but the original look and a touch of individuality "smooth out" this shortcoming.

Radial furniture is made on legs, it has a standard height of 40-50 cm from the floor. But there is furniture lower - 20-30 cm. In the past, such furniture was in smoking rooms. Rattan products are fixed on a round base, there is a thick soft mattress on the seat.

How to choose?

The purpose of furniture is comfort in human life. Therefore, when buying, you must carefully inspect the entire structure. The stability of the legs is critical. They must have special pads to protect the flooring from damage. The spraying on the metal should not be chipped or damaged. The quality of the upholstery is also important. The leather has a long service life and a respectable appearance. The skin is easy to care for - a damp cleaning is enough. If you choose fabric upholstery, you should remember that natural ones are pleasant to the touch, but short-lived - these are velvet, velor. Mixed fabrics, such as jacquard, tapestry, last a long time and have a beautiful texture.

If you are lucky and have to buy an openwork plywood product, high-quality gluing of parts is important here. The product must be stable, not squeak or wobble. Sit on it, experience quality and comfort. Lean back, pay attention to the armrests. The whole structure should feel like a single monolith, stand firmly on its legs when you get off and sit down.
