Today, advertisements for rattan furniture can be seen quite often. And the most demanded piece of furniture is an armchair. As statistics show, the most popular form is considered to be round. In the article, we will consider the features and varieties of round rattan chairs.

Advantages and disadvantages

The positive aspects as well as the disadvantages of rattan chairs mainly depend on what material they are made of. There are two types of rattan - natural and artificial. Let's dwell on this in more detail.

Natural rattan is a special kind of palm that grows in tropical Asia. The stems of this plant are similar in their properties to lianas - they are just as strong and flexible, so they make very original interior items.

Recently, the industry has been offering the so-called artificial rattan, from which no less interesting pieces of furniture are made... It is usually made from rubber or polyethylene by forcing through a narrow opening along with other additives.

Each of these materials has strengths and weaknesses. Both types of rattan have some similarities, despite the difference in origin.

Let's start with the benefits of rattan chairs.

  • Durability and long service life. By purchasing a round rattan chair for your children, you can be sure that with proper care it will also serve their grandchildren. The seat and frame do not deform over time and keep their original shape perfectly, even if an adult with a large weight will sit on the chair every day. With external fragility, a rattan chair can withstand about 100 kg. There are also some models with an integrated metal frame, which increases its operational load.
  • Flexibility, thanks to which the chair can be given any, even the most intricate shape.
  • Ease. It is believed that natural rattan is heavier than artificial, but such furniture is incomparably lighter than its solid wood counterpart. This allows the chair to be moved from place to place as often as needed. Thanks to this quality, it has also become possible to create pendant models.
  • Minimal care. Furniture made from natural materials periodically requires restoration of the varnish layer and wet cleaning, and artificial rattan should be periodically cleaned of dust.
  • Variety of models and decor. Even if we talk only about a round chair, then there are a large number of variants of this form - floor, hanging, on a leg, rocking chairs, sofas, swings, and so on. This, as well as the variety of colors and weaving techniques, allows you to choose a rounded rattan chair for almost any interior from the good old Provence to the modern loft. In addition, you can choose a cover, pillows, capes for the armchair, and also simply paint it, making an exclusive model out of a mass item.
  • Security. Regardless of the origin, rattan is non-toxic, and the smooth shape eliminates the likelihood of injury. Therefore, the round chair can be suspended above the floor - even if it falls off, the person sitting in it will not be injured. Due to the lightness and strength of the structure, the likelihood of hitting or introducing a splinter is excluded.

However, one should not forget about some of the disadvantages of round rattan chairs.

    • Round form makes the chair very bulky, so it is advisable to purchase it for large rooms.
    • Price. Furniture made from natural materials has always been highly valued, and especially from rattan, as this is a hard-to-find raw material. Long-distance transportation and logistics difficulties affect the final price of the finished product. A faux rattan chair can be slightly cheaper. But if it has an interesting design, this will also affect its value.
    • Afraid of external influences. A chair made from natural materials is not intended for outdoor use, as it can deteriorate in the rain and excessive sun. And artificial furniture does not provide such aesthetic pleasure as natural materials.

    Models

A round rattan armchair can have many options, which are conventionally classified according to several criteria.

According to the material of manufacture - from artificial or natural rattan.

By type of installation - floor-standing and suspended.

The most popular are several models of floor chairs.

    • Classic. Has a stable base (legs or other support). This is the most common model, simple and reliable at the same time.
    • Spinning. In such models, only the frame is usually made of rattan, and the base with a rotating mechanism is made of metal or high-strength plastic.
    • Rocking chair. The runners with the swing function act as a support here.
    • Papasan. Hemispherical armchair, can be with a pillow and (or) with armrests.
    • Mamasan. It differs from the previous type only in size - if the papasan model is intended for one person, then in the mamasan chair two people can be accommodated.

Suspended round chairs are divided according to the method of attachment.

    • Ceiling. The chair is suspended from a hook pre-installed in the ceiling surface using a chain or rope.
    • Beam. It differs from the previous one in that first a beam is attached to the ceiling, then a hook is fixed in it, and only then the body is hung on it.
    • Barbell. It can be a floor stand with a spring and a chain, on which the rotating part of the structure itself is attached.

    How to choose?

When choosing a wicker chair, you should always start from its location. If it is a garden or an open veranda, it is worth taking a closer look at artificial rattan models, as it is more resistant to excessive moisture and an abundance of sun. Furniture made from natural raw materials is recommended for use on a covered terrace or in any other enclosed space. In this case, it will be appropriate to purchase a chair with a soft cover or a seat cushion.

The cover and decorative trim should also be selected taking into account the room where the chair is located. For example, furniture with decorative elements made of leather, velvet or satin will look great in a hallway or office. For the kitchen, it is better to choose covers made of natural fabrics such as satin or cotton. They create a feeling of home comfort and are easy to wash.

Stable classic armchairs or models with a rotating mechanism are traditionally chosen for the living room. A rocking chair will be equally appropriate in the bedroom, in the living room, and on the veranda.

Hanging rattan chairs are usually purchased for a garden or a spacious veranda. Sometimes they can also be found in city apartments - modern new buildings often have spacious balconies.

Almost any option is suitable for a bedroom. It can be either a full-fledged adult chair or a child's version. Sometimes there are even special products for animals.

    Beautiful examples

The modern furniture industry pleases the consumer with a variety of shapes and design options for rattan furniture. And even the traditional classics are being modernized, equipped with various fashionable elements.

For example, a rocking chair can be equipped with an electric drive that propels it, or a massage mat instead of a traditional pillow. Alternatively, you can give preference to models with a retractable footrest. These chairs resemble a chaise longue.

The swing chair is usually very popular with children. It can be used as a cradle for babies' motion sickness - the rounded shape snugly wraps around from all sides, giving babies comfort, warmth and a sense of security.

The basket (or nest) most often has a horizontal seat and rounded sides, smoothly turning into a low back, which is indicated here only conditionally. Such a basket often has a rotating mechanism.

The hemisphere resembles a ball without one side. There are almost no backs and armrests here either, and the seat has a curved shape.

Sometimes such models are made not in the shape of a regular ball, but in the shape of an egg with a rounded roof or in the shape of a cocoon with a pointed top. They can be open or closed - a kind of a kind of house with an opening for the entrance. This option can be a great alternative for those who do not have their own personal space.
