The Syria strawberry is a non-refurbished variety and is very popular in Europe. In our country, gardeners increasingly prefer this particular variety due to its advantages and excellent characteristics.

Breeding history of the variety

Syria was developed by Italian breeders of New Fruits. Before Syria, this agrofirm has already established itself as an excellent producer of excellent varieties. From 2010 to 2015, this species was registered in many European countries. The Russian state register has not yet issued strawberries in Syria according to all the rules.

Description of the variety

The mid-season variety Syria is characterized by the following features:

  • sprawling bushes, tall, so these characteristics should be taken into account when looking for a place;
  • foliage wrinkled, large with serration along the border, petioles are long, wide;
  • the color of the foliage is dark, emerald;
  • there are several peduncles on the bush, they are located below - thus, the sun does not burn the berries under the leaves and birds have no access to them;
  • peduncles form white flowers, about 9 pieces each.

In this variety, experts distinguish a number of significant advantages:

  • high taste of ripe berries;
  • versatility of the variety - perfect for fresh consumption, for conservation and freezing;
  • the variety takes root well in any climate, tolerates cold weather;
  • dry hot weather does not spoil the taste of strawberries;
  • berries are hidden from the sun by leaves;
  • the crop is well transported, perfectly stored if the necessary conditions are created;
  • the variety is resistant to diseases and insects.

Do not forget about the disadvantages of this variety of strawberries:

  • average yield level;
  • in the greenhouse, the plant is susceptible to attacks by spider mites.

Ripening terms

The above variety belongs to the mid-season, the ripening period largely depends on the region of growth. The average time required for ripening is 2 months from planting. In the south, berries usually ripen in the first half of June, in other regions - in the second. The delay in the onset of ripening is associated with the region, sometimes fruiting begins at a later date, for example, in the north.

Yield

The first season brings 0.5-1 kg per bush from each bush, in the following years the yield level becomes higher. Commercial farming is capable of producing much more fruit. As for the renewal, given the decrease in yield from the 4th year, it is worth doing this every 3 years.

Berries and their taste

The external and quality characteristics of the berries of this variety have the following features:

  • medium size, cone-shaped, slightly elongated, blunt tip;
  • juicy consistency, but dense in structure, so transportation is not a problem;
  • the first wave of berries is usually larger, the weight can reach 40 g;
  • subsequent fruits are somewhat smaller, their maximum weight is 25 g;
  • ripe berry color - red, saturated tone;
  • in the cut, the berries are pinkish, without white grains, there are no voids.

The tasting qualities of ripe berries are at a high level, the maximum score is 5, but experts have rated this variety at 4.5 points.Juicy, sweetness is combined with a slight sourness. Not fully ripe berries are also very tasty and sweet. Syria is also distinguished by a great aroma - a combination of strawberry and fruit notes.

Growing features

The Syria variety is not the most capricious, but it requires compulsory care, otherwise the yield drops sharply. There are a number of activities that need to be done regularly.

  • Moisturizing. Ideally, drip irrigation is necessary so that the bushes do not experience a lack of moisture even in drought. If this is impossible to arrange, then watering is organized in the mornings and evenings, during the day Syria is not watered. Use warm water, settled or filtered. If watered with cool water, the growth of the bushes will slow down. Syria strawberries need to be watered most abundantly during the period of bud formation and berry formation. Moisturizing intensity - every other day or two days.
  • Weeds and soil. The bushes must be loosened up in a circle after moistening - natural or forced. The top crust should be broken up. Do not forget to destroy weeds, weeding is carried out as needed.
  • Pruning. The whiskers of the variety are formed during the fruiting period, they can take food and the necessary substances from the berries. Therefore, they must be removed.
When and how to plant strawberries so that they bring a rich harvest is a question that novice gardeners often ask themselves. The berries can be planted in the ground in spring, summer and autumn. Each season has its own characteristics of planting.
Strawberries are the most beloved and popular berry in our gardens. Even in the smallest plots, there will always be a place for it, since every year there are more and more unexpected and original solutions for its cultivation. Strawberries are grown in the form of a carpet, rows, nests, in addition to many different original options. Everyone chooses their own way depending on the area of the site and its design.
Watering strawberries, like any other garden crop, should be in compliance with all the necessary recommendations. During the fruiting period, including the ripening of the fruits, the amount of moisture should be sufficient for the harvest to be a decent amount, and the berries are tasty and aromatic. If you neglect watering, or water little and not enough, then the strawberries can dry out. With excessive moisture, the berries can rot.
Speaking of pruning strawberries, most often it is the removal of leaves on fertile bushes that is meant. This is done to partially rejuvenate the plant, to get rid of damaged, diseased leaves, to prevent bacterial and fungal infections, to reduce the number of harmful insects.

Site selection and soil preparation

Much depends on where you purchased the strawberries for planting. If this is a nursery where the root system is closed, then planting is possible in any month of the warm period from spring to autumn. Seedlings from the garden or purchased with open roots require planting within 2 months - July and August. Choose an area that is well-lit and there is no shortage of sunlight. If you plant strawberries in the shade, the berries become too small and sour.

Optimal for planting soil is fertile, loose consistency, as airy as possible. If you plant Syria in soil with high groundwater or clay type, then the declared characteristics may not be realized. Clay type soil is not a reason to refuse planting, it is enough to improve the soil with the help of various additives:

  • chopped straw;
  • sand;
  • turf from the forest.

In the lowlands, form the highest possible beds with drainage arrangement. Do not forget about crop rotation when planting this variety of strawberries. It grows well after garlic and onions, any legumes, carrots. Discard the formation of beds after any nightshades, pumpkins, cabbage. Before planting, it is worth enriching the soil with organic and mineral fertilizers.Siderates such as rapeseed, mustard, oats work great, they just need to be dug up in the off-season and planted in Syria.

Planting rules for strawberry varieties Syria:

  • high-quality strawberries are planted in two rows, the optimal vector is from north to south;
  • between the bushes should not be less than 0.4 m;
  • the minimum row spacing is half a meter;
  • be sure to fertilize the soil before planting with superphosphate and potassium salt, do not forget about the drainage layer;
  • the seedlings are transferred to the center of the recess, the roots are straightened in diameter, the soil mixture is introduced from above, which needs to be compacted;
  • be sure to moisten the soil and mulch with humus.
The soil for strawberries should be saturated with organic matter. The plant grows best on light loamy or sandy loam soil. Black soil and gray forest soil are also excellent for cultivation. It is undesirable to plant strawberries on clay soil.

Pollination

Non-remontant strawberry varieties are perfectly pollinated by themselves, provided that they are grown in the open field. If the Syria variety is grown in a greenhouse or other conditions, it can be re-pollinated. This is done manually, with the help of bees or electrical appliances.

One of the important techniques in strawberry care is feeding. Regular fertilization guarantees a rich harvest. There are several different ways to feed strawberries, and each of them is designed for a specific period of plant development. During flowering, fruiting and after it, feeding should be different.

In order for strawberries to delight us with an abundance of large and sweet berries next year, they need to be properly prepared for winter. The set of measures for preparing strawberries for the cold includes: pruning, watering, feeding, loosening, pest control, mulching and shelter.

Diseases and pests

The disease resistance of the variety is quite high, this is an absolute advantage. In addition, there is practically no danger of chlorosis in Syria, but in any case, in the spring it is worth removing the foliage and cleaning the ridges in the spring. Remove the top layer of soil to eradicate last year's pests.

Insects can do more harm than disease. Syria is not resistant to attacks by spider mites, nematodes, slugs and other insects. Purchase special formulations in the store and use according to the instructions. Any spices can be planted near the strawberry plantation, they repel insects. Mass attacks are stopped with pesticides.

Strawberries are often subject to many dangerous diseases that can seriously undermine their condition. Among the most common are powdery mildew, gray mold, brown spot, anthracnose, and verticillosis. Before buying a variety, you need to inquire about its disease resistance.

Reproduction

This variety multiplies with seeds, dividing a bush and a mustache. The tape method is optimal, it allows you to select strips for the formation of rosettes. Young bushes can not be planted, but strips of outdated strawberries can be removed after the rosettes have taken root. For the method of dividing the bush, only three-year-old mother plants, mostly healthy ones, are suitable. Seeds are preferred by gardeners, this is a difficult way.

Strawberries or garden strawberries multiply very easily. The most common way to obtain planting material is to grow young plants from vegetative shoots - whiskers. Seedlings are also obtained by dividing the bush.
