Honeysuckle pleases the owners of the site not only with a beautiful color, but also with fruits with an unusual taste. When planning to plant it on your site, it is important to learn everything about the fruiting of the bush.

Growing regions

Cultivation of Volkhov's honeysuckle is allowed in most regions of our country.

Self-fertility and the need for pollinators

The variety is self-fertile, so you can't get a crop without pollinators. Among them:

  • Nymph;

  • Azure;

  • Pavlovskaya;

  • Amphora;

  • In memory of Gidzyuk.

Growing and care

Frost-resistant types of honeysuckle like Volkhov are recommended to be planted in the fall, but you can wait until spring. Climbing shrubs are placed in the soil about 10 cm deeper than they were in pots. The size of the planting hole should be 5 cm in diameter larger than the size of the root ball.

Pour a layer of compost on the bottom. Plants are susceptible to drought, so it is recommended to apply mulch to cover the area around the trunk. The radius of the trunk circle is at least 10 cm.

Since honeysuckle does not like a large amount of moisture, it is advisable to lay drainage at the bottom of the planting pit. It is advised to leave a distance of at least two meters between the bushes, otherwise the honeysuckle, when it grows, will not have enough space, the crown will be shaded, which will negatively affect future growth.

Before planting, the soil is slightly moistened. When Volkhov's honeysuckle is immersed in the hole, you will need to carefully spread the roots and sprinkle it with earth to the middle, then tamp it a little with your hand to remove air pockets and only then completely cover the root ball with earth.

Watering Volkhov's honeysuckle must be performed regularly - from spring to autumn, if there is no precipitation or they are few. If the plant is planted in a region with a mild winter, then watering is carried out during this period.

During the growing season, Volkhov's honeysuckle is recommended to be fed. Organic fertilizers or mineral fertilizers with an increased amount of potassium and phosphorus are suitable, thanks to which the plant blooms profusely and takes root better.

A good fertilizer for this variety of honeysuckle is the following mixture:

  • 1 kilogram of ash;

  • 50 grams of superphosphate;

  • 2 buckets of compost.

And also the list of care measures includes pruning Volkhov's honeysuckle. The procedure should not be too intense, as this can lead to a lack of flowering. As a rule, the vines blooming on the shoots can be cut a little harder. The work is carried out mainly in the spring. The shoots are shortened by 1/3 of the length, while it is also necessary to remove the weak, diseased shoots and located too close. Once every few years, it is worth rejuvenating the plant by removing some of the old branches.

It is worth remembering that pruning of young shrubs that are not yet 3 years old is not carried out. In this case, you can only harm the honeysuckle. It is necessary to remove old branches once every two years, if the procedure is carried out more often, then it is very likely that the yield level will decrease.

Around the bushes, you will need to periodically remove weeds and loosen the ground, but this should be done very carefully so as not to damage the root system.

At the age of 3 and 6 years, Volkhov's honeysuckle can be transplanted, but before the procedure, it is advised to cut it to 50 cm from the ground. In a new place, fertilizer is first placed in the planting pit:

  • 15 grams of superphosphate;

  • 70 grams of potassium salt.

If you properly care for the described shrub, then the fruits can be harvested within three years after planting. Despite the fact that this variety does not need insulation for the winter, experienced plant breeders are advised to lay humus or old foliage around the trunk.

You can plant honeysuckle in open ground in spring, summer and autumn. Best of all, honeysuckle grows in an illuminated low-lying swampy place, while the site must be reliably protected from the wind. It is desirable that the soil is loamy or sandy loam. If the soil is poor, then it will first need to be fertilized.
In order for honeysuckle to bloom and bear fruit well, it needs to be properly cared for. One of the main procedures that affects the appearance and yield of this plant is shoot pruning. Without timely care, bushes prone to thickening rapidly turn into wild thickets with diseased and stunted plants, the number of young shoots decreases, the quantity and quality of berries decreases.

Disease and pest resistance

Volkhov's honeysuckle has good immunity to diseases, but pests harm it, albeit to an insignificant extent, for this reason it is necessary to carry out spring treatment with insecticides.

Timely fight against diseases and pests of honeysuckle allows you to grow a healthy crop, used both for decorative purposes and for harvesting fragrant berries. When growing honeysuckle, it is necessary to know the main diseases of the crop, common pests, as well as effective measures to combat them.

Winter hardiness and the need for shelter

This variety is resistant to frost, even during the flowering period the plant can withstand air temperatures up to -8 C.

Location and soil requirements

Volkhov's honeysuckle grows in fertile soil, sufficiently moist. Avoid planting on dry and waterlogged soils. In the first case, the plant can dry out quickly, in the second, the root system will be susceptible to fungal diseases.

The best place to plant is in an open area with good lighting and no draft.

In order to increase the amount of honeysuckle in your area, it is not necessary to purchase planting material, it is quite possible to multiply the varieties you like yourself. There are several ways to breed honeysuckle: cuttings, layering, root shoots, dividing the bush, and also sowing seeds.
