Every summer resident in his garden wants to have a good variety of cherries. A wonderful variety Tamaris was bred in Russia. It meets almost all the wishes of summer residents, grows quickly, seedlings are available for sale.

Description of the variety

The new variety was bred in the city of Michurinsk at the All-Russian Research Institute of Horticulture named after I. V. Michurin. The author is considered the breeder T.V. Morozova, after whom the variety was named.

This small tree will take up little space on a small garden plot and will look good as a hedge. Height is not more than 2 meters, the crown is formed, not dense, with long shoots.

The main characteristics of the variety:

  • good resistance to lack of moisture;

  • increased winter hardiness up to –25 degrees Celsius;

  • disease resistance;

  • inflorescences consist of several flowers with medium-sized white petals;

  • self-fertility, that is, no pollinating insects or other cherry trees are required to harvest;

  • green oval leaves;

  • annual fruiting.

The tree is pruned regularly. The procedure allows you to distribute the load of the fruit on the branches. They can break off from a large number of berries.

Fruit characteristics

Berries of the Tamaris variety are large, beautiful and regular in shape. They do not tolerate transportation due to the large amount of juice in the pulp.

The main properties of the fruit:

  • average weight from 4.8 to 5 g;

  • a small depression at the base;

  • the color of the fruit is dark red;

  • The "abdomen" has a small seam;

  • the color of the pulp is dark red;

  • the top of the fruit will be flattened;

  • the color of the juice is purple;

  • large, rounded bone.

Sugar in fruits - 9.98%, vitamin C - 38 mg per 100 g.

Taste qualities

Ripe berries have a sweet and sour taste, sweeter than the usual cherry flavor. The fruits are of universal use. The juice turns out to be rich, during freezing the berries retain their shape well. You can make compotes, marshmallows, jelly and jam from cherries. Berries are not suitable for transportation and long-term fresh storage.

Ripening and fruiting

Ripens later, that is, at the end of July, beginning of August. The term depends on the region of growth and weather conditions. The flowering period lasts 5-6 days on average. Fruiting of cherries is about 20 years.

When growing cherries on your site, you need to know some of the features of fruiting. After planting, the cherry tree usually does not bear fruit for the first few years. Under favorable conditions, this crop can bear fruit in 2 or 3 years. However, you often have to wait 4-5 years.

Yield

The tree begins to bear fruit 2-4 years after planting. The yield is from 8-10 to 20 kg per tree. The variety was bred in the city of Michurinsk. There, the average yield is 65-70 centners per hectare. Late ripening periods contribute to high yields.After all, the fruits avoid recurrent frosts, which have a negative effect on early varieties.

Productivity decreases with prolonged tree disease, soil depletion, planting cherries in soil with a meager supply of nutrients, and the absence of regular feeding. The yield increases when a number of additional pollinators are planted, which are cherries of the varieties Lyubskaya, Zhukovskaya, Turgenevka.

Growing regions

Initially, the variety was created for the Central, North Caucasian, Central Black Earth regions of the country, but the tree has taken root well in other regions of Russia.

A short cherry tree is well suited for regions with strong, frequent winds, as the branches of short trees do not break. Tamaris cherry has a winter-hardy wood, adapted to withstand severe frosts. This cherry variety turned out to be adapted to the climate and soils of central Russia.

Landing

Saplings are planted in spring and autumn. In the northern regions, spring planting is desirable. The seedlings will get stronger and prepare for the coming cold weather. It is better to plant cherries in open, sunny places, for example, on a calm slope. Loamy, sandy loam soils are preferred. In acidic soil, it is better to add a solution of wood ash to neutralize excess acid. When planting several trees, leave a distance of 3.5 m between them.

Tamaris cherries are planted according to certain rules:

  • you need to prepare a pit measuring 50x50 cm;

  • add humus (1 bucket), superphosphate (40 g), ash (1 kg), mix everything;

  • drive a stake into the hole for tying a seedling;

  • set the seedling in the center of the hole, spread the roots throughout the hole, cover with soil, carefully tie the seedling to the support;

  • compact the earth, form a near-trunk circle, water with settled water, about 2-3 buckets;

  • carry out mulching near the trunk.

Cherries and grapes are good neighbors. Apples, plums, pears, apricots have a negative effect on cherries. A sufficient distance from these trees is 5 meters.

For guaranteed survival of a cherry seedling in a summer cottage, all basic requirements should be strictly observed during planting. It is necessary to correctly determine the timing of planting, correctly choose a seedling, prepare a planting pit.
Cherry grafting is an agricultural technique, during which one plant fragment is transferred to another to obtain a new crop with its own characteristics and properties. During the procedure, the aerial part of one tree is spliced with a fragment of another culture. This will increase the yield of the cherry tree as well as increase its resistance to diseases and pests.

Growing and caring

Young varietal trees need moderate watering. In the first few years, watering should be 4-5 times a season with settled water at the rate of 13 liters of water per tree. Experts recommend mulching the trunk circle to avoid rapid evaporation of moisture. In a rainy summer, the number of waterings should be reduced.

Mature trees are watered less often, only with the onset of spring and after the end of flowering. During the ripening of the fruit, the tree consumes less moisture. Its excess negatively affects the berries, they begin to crack. The root collar should be tried not to moisten during watering. After watering, you need to loosen the ground, remove weeds.

It is necessary to feed Tamaris plants from the second year after planting. Good fertilizers are urea, superphosphate humus, ammonium nitrate. You need to make top dressing in the trunk circle. After 5 years, the number of complexes is reduced. When using powdered fertilizers, the soil must be watered.

Prune the crown in spring or autumn. The longevity of the tree, the quality of the berries and the yield depend on the correct pruning. It is necessary to remove all shoots that obscure the crown of the tree. If the length of the shoot is less than 30 cm, do not touch it. In the fall, no branches are left, which are located in relation to the trunk at an acute angle.

When forming a crown, young branches must be lifted and tied to strong branches to enhance plant growth. For quality pruning, use a garden saw or a sharp knife. You do not need to use pruning shears, it only spoils the branches.

Tamaris cherry is excellent for growing in many regions of our country. A short tree gives a bountiful harvest of sweet berries. The variety is unpretentious in maintenance, does not require a lot of water and fertilizers, it only needs pruning. Thin branches can break under the weight of the crop. Tamaris cherry can be grown on a personal plot and on an industrial scale, the yield allows you to include it in the business plan.

One of the keys to a good cherry harvest is proper care, a mandatory step of which is pruning. Pruning is one of the simplest procedures, and it doesn't require a lot of tools and time. After the procedure, the cherry tree redistributes a significant part of its vitality to the formation of a crop, which becomes better and more stable.
For abundant fruiting and successful growth, the cherry tree must be fed. Cherry makes rather high demands on the quality of feeding. For it, you can use both organic and mineral mixtures. At each stage of the growing season of a fruit tree, it needs different microelements.
Cherries are found in almost every garden plot. And if every year she pleases with a bountiful harvest of large and sweet berries, then the question arises about the reproduction of such an effective variety. Cherry can be propagated by cuttings, seeds, layering, grafting, shoots. Each of the methods has its own characteristics.
