Cherry The breeders of the Research Institute of Fruit Crops received their vocation as a result of crossing the Melitopol dessert variety and Samsonovka. It happened in the 80s of the last century. The artificially bred hybrid immediately proved itself well among specialists and amateur gardeners. At first, the variety took root in the territory of Ukraine and Belarus, then it became in demand in Russia. Due to its unpretentiousness and high-quality harvest, cherries are still actively cultivated.

Description of the variety

The variety has a number of unique characteristics, the most important of which are excellent frost resistance combined with the highest regenerative capacity. In addition, cherries of this variety have excellent health, strong immunity. It tolerates drought well. The external description has the following characteristics:

  • semi-dwarf variety, height varies from 2.3 to 2.5 m;
  • the crown has a rounded shape, very thickened, needs regular pruning;
  • the bark is dark brown, rather smooth;
  • the foliage of the tree is at a good level, the foliage is large;
  • the color of the plate is green, the shape resembles an ellipse, the base is round, and the top is sharp;
  • the edges of the plate are crenate-serrate, the surface is of a matte type, with veins;
  • petiole standard, not pigmented.

The Vocation variety has the following advantages:

  • high level of productivity;
  • excellent tasting qualities;
  • the tree is compact, not spreading;
  • fruits ripen early;
  • strong immunity.

Among the significant drawbacks, one can only name the self-sterility of the cherry.

Fruit characteristics

Cherries of this variety are round in shape, but slightly compressed from the sides. The fruits are large, the weight ranges from 5-6 g. The skin color is burgundy, the cherry shines beautifully. The pulp is dense, but very juicy. The stone is small, it is separated from the pulp very easily, without effort. The composition of the berries is as follows:

  • fiber - about 16%;
  • sugar - about 10%;
  • organic acids - up to 1%.

There are quite a lot of useful microelements and vitamins in juice and pulp.

Taste qualities

Since the amount of sugar in the berries is considerable, they taste rather sweet, with a pleasant sour note. Tasting score of the Vocation - 4.6 points. Cherries are great for fresh consumption. It is also used for all types of preparations: jams, compotes, alcoholic beverages.

Ripening and fruiting

The beginning of ripening of this variety is mid-July. Sometimes the terms can be shifted taking into account climatic characteristics, but not too much. The fruits ripen at the same time, so the harvest is harvested in a short time. After 2 or 3 years after planting, you can count on fruiting.

When growing cherries on your site, you need to know some of the features of fruiting. After planting, the cherry tree usually does not bear fruit for the first few years. Under favorable conditions, this crop can bear fruit in 2 or 3 years. However, you often have to wait 4-5 years.

Yield

This variety belongs to high-yielding, and the indicators improve with age. A tree 10 years old can bear about 30 kg of berries. Given the semi-dwarf variety, the indicator is excellent. The fruits are quite tender and poorly transported. To transport over long distances, you need to remove the berries without waiting for the final ripeness.

Self-fertility and the need for pollinators

The variety is self-fertile, so it is necessary to plant other varieties for cross-type pollination. The trees are planted at a distance of no more than 250 m. It is very important that the flowering dates of the varieties coincide. Experts have identified several of the best varieties for pollination of the Vocation:

  • Memory of Yenikeev;
  • Glandular;
  • Chocolate girl;
  • Youth.

Landing

First of all, you need to select and purchase planting material. Seedlings of this variety are sold with open roots or in a container. It is important to evaluate the seedling according to the following parameters:

  • root length should not be less than 20 cm;
  • optimal height - up to one meter;
  • the trunk and branches are intact, without damage of any type;
  • there are no dried or dark formations on the roots.

Seedlings of Vocation are soaked in a fungicidal composition to prevent rot on the root system. This variety can be planted in spring and autumn. If the region has cold winters, it is optimal to choose the spring period. This will avoid the death of a young plant in severe frosts. It is very important to find a good landing site. It should be well lit and protected from the wind. The groundwater level is at least 2 meters.

It is important to choose a place so that there are no raspberries, currant bushes, gooseberries nearby. Do not plant nightshades or trees with strong roots next to cherries. Good neighbors include honeysuckle, cherry plum, plum, sweet cherry, and other varieties of cherry. To ensure the prevention of fruit rot, you can plant an elderberry nearby.

The planting of trees is carried out according to the standard method. After planting, the seedlings are watered and mulched.

For guaranteed survival of a cherry seedling in a summer cottage, all basic requirements should be strictly observed during planting. It is necessary to correctly determine the timing of planting, correctly choose a seedling, prepare a planting pit.
Cherry grafting is an agricultural technique, during which one plant fragment is transferred to another to obtain a new crop with its own characteristics and properties. During the procedure, the aerial part of one tree is spliced with a fragment of another culture. This will increase the yield of the cherry tree as well as increase its resistance to diseases and pests.

Growing and care

Caring for cherries of this variety does not require serious agrotechnical knowledge. But there are necessary measures to be taken.

  • Moisturizing. This variety is drought-resistant, so it tolerates the absence of watering calmly. But if you do not want to lose in yield, you should take into account the weather conditions and ensure regular watering. Make sure that there is no waterlogging, otherwise air permeability will decrease and the plant will develop worse. Remember to loosen the soil so that moisture does not stagnate. Weeds are also removed without fail.
  • Fertilizer. Since when planting, fertilizing is plentiful, in the first year the tree does not need to be fed. From the second year, mineral compositions are introduced annually, organic - once every 2 years. A two-year-old seedling needs 100 g of urea under the trunk, a three-year-old - 200 g. A four-year-old requires 200 g of urea in the spring, and in the fall potassium-phosphorus mixtures are introduced into the dug soil. Starting from the age of five, 200 g of ammonium nitrate is injected under the trunk in the spring, potassium and phosphorus are given in the fall. Don't forget about humus every 2 years.
  • Pruning. This procedure is carried out regularly as soon as the crown begins to thicken. Pruning is needed not only to prevent thickening, but also to prevent fungus. Also this one improves the quality of the berries. Pruning is carried out in the spring, before the buds bloom, in about a couple of weeks. It is necessary to cut off all dried branches, damaged, woven, facing inward towards the trunk.
  • Preparing for winter.After the foliage has fallen, it must be collected, the soil should be watered as abundantly as possible - about 10 liters per trunk. After absorbing moisture, the soil is mulched with straw, sawdust. Do not forget to whitewash the barrel with vitriol and PVA glue. This will make it possible to protect the plant from frost and rodents.
One of the keys to a good cherry harvest is proper care, a mandatory step of which is pruning. Pruning is one of the simplest procedures, and it doesn't require a lot of tools and time. After the procedure, the cherry tree redistributes a significant part of its vitality to the formation of a crop, which becomes better and more stable.
For abundant fruiting and successful growth, the cherry tree must be fed. Cherry makes rather high demands on the quality of feeding. For it, you can use both organic and mineral mixtures. At each stage of the growing season of a fruit tree, it needs different microelements.
Cherries are found in almost every garden plot. And if every year she pleases with a bountiful harvest of large and sweet berries, then the question arises about the reproduction of such an effective variety. Cherry can be propagated by cuttings, seeds, layering, grafting, shoots. Each of the methods has its own characteristics.
